Regarding the syndrome of Qu Niao Chong (Qu Niao insect) encircling the waist and abdomen in children from the *Chouyi Bingyuan* (Source of Diseases): The Qu Niao insect is about one cun long, covered with hairs like fine bristles, measuring five to six fen in length, with many very thin legs, residing between house walls.
It is said that when it wanders and encounters a person, it urinates on the person's shadow. Wherever the urine touches the shadow, the corresponding part of the body develops sores. People suffering from this disease often have lesions on the waist and flanks. Initially, they appear as ring-like eruptions, small ones like millet grains, large ones like hemp seeds. They gradually grow larger, encircling the waist, producing pus and forming ulcers.
The *Qianjin Fang* states: Whenever the urine of the Qu Niao insect touches a person's shadow, it causes sores. The condition presents as sudden severe pain in a specific area of the body, like thorns piercing or like stings from venomous insects, forming small nodules clustered like cornelian cherry fruits. The surrounding area is red, with white pus in the center resembling millet grains. It also causes tightness of the skin and flesh, generalized aversion to cold, and high fever. In severe cases, lesions spread continuously across the waist, flanks, and chest. The treatment method involves rubbing and applying Rhinoceros Horn to stop the toxicity initially, following the treatment principles for Huo Dan (erysipelas). In the sixth month of the Wude era, I contracted this illness. After five or six days, I felt mental oppression and malaise. Other treatments were ineffective. Someone advised me to draw the shape of the Qu Niao insect on the ground, carefully scrape the soil from its belly with a knife, mix the soil with saliva to form a paste, and apply it. After two applications, I recovered. This demonstrates that all things in the world interact mutually, though the underlying mechanism remains unknown.
