According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Master Chao) regarding infantile cholera with vomiting and diarrhea: Cholera refers to the interference between Yin and Yang, clear and turbid Qi, resulting in Qi disorder. When this Qi disorder occurs between the intestines and stomach, it is called cholera. Infants have delicate and weak intestines and stomachs; if they are exposed to wind and cold after undressing, or if their milk and food fail to digest, it transforms into vomiting and diarrhea. Alternatively, if the nursing mother is exposed to wind and cold or consumes raw and cold foods, cold Qi enters the milk, causing it to spoil. If the infant drinks this spoiled milk, it results in cholera with vomiting and diarrhea. All these conditions stem from offending the fu organs, causing clear and turbid Qi to interfere with each other, thus leading to cholera. If accompanied by wind pathogen and internal excess heat accumulation, symptoms include fever, headache, body pain, along with abdominal vomiting and diarrhea. For any infantile cholera, breastfeeding must be temporarily suspended, and medicine should also be administered to the nursing mother to harmonize Qi and blood, ensuring the milk remains mild. If an infant's vomiting and diarrhea persist, Qi and blood become chaotic, potentially triggering convulsions and epilepsy.
*Qianjin Yi* asks: What is cholera? The answer is: Vomiting accompanied by diarrhea constitutes cholera.
Master Mao states: Infants may suffer from various types of diarrhea upon birth, each presenting differently, requiring sequential medication. Regarding infantile cholera with vomiting and diarrhea: there is upper vomiting and lower diarrhea, slight fever over the whole body, and inability to nurse. This condition arises from irregular consumption of hot and cold foods, stagnant Qi, heat in the Spleen, and cold in the Stomach preventing digestion. Treatment initially involves administering Chenxiang Shijing Yin (see Cholera section), Dingxiang San (see Vomiting and Diarrhea section), Ruxiang San (see All Diarrhea sections), Huopi San, and Anle Wan (two formulas exist, one in Stomach Qi Disharmony section, one in Slow Spleen Wind section). If the condition progresses with extreme thirst, refusal to eat, red cheeks, dull eyes, weak voice, and excessive sweating, it may transform into Slow Spleen Wind, which is a fatal prognosis.
Mr. Wang Handong in *Jiabao* states: For infants suffering from cholera manifesting as vomiting and diarrhea, administer Dabao San two to three doses (see this section), Guanyin San two to three doses (see Stomach Qi Disharmony section), and Wenbai Wan two to three doses. If symptoms do not subside, fearing Spleen fatigue and refusal of milk/food, administer Xingxing San two to three doses. If symptoms persist despite following this sequence, it often transforms into Slow Spleen Wind or Slow Convulsion Wind. In such cases, Zhuli Gao two to three doses should be given, interspersed with Xingxing San (all three formulas see Prolonged Diarrhea section) to regulate Stomach Qi, along with Chenxiang San (see this section).
Zhang Huan notes: Infantile cholera with vomiting and diarrhea is caused by disharmony of Yin and Yang and interference of clear and turbid Qi, identical to adults. Like rescuing from fire or drowning, prompt treatment is essential. Shengshi Dan (see Cold Vomiting section) is suitable. Also, Shunzheng Tang (see this section) is appropriate.
Yang Daye, Hanlin Attendant, asks: Why do infants with cholera vomit milk? The answer is: The method of caring for infants requires carefully selecting the nursing mother: she should be mentally vigorous, calm, wise, disease-free, fleshy, warm-natured, and gentle. She must manage diet properly; otherwise, diseases arise. If one neglects dietary restrictions, feeds indiscriminately, or nurses during "transformation periods" (Bian Zheng), exposes the infant to cold while nursing, feeds when too hot, gets angry after drinking, cries excessively, or disturbs the Spirit through fright, causing irregular milk intake, vomiting and diarrhea become likely.
*Huiyan Guan Zheng* describes the signs of cholera with vomiting and diarrhea: Sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhea is termed cholera. If thirsty, administer Chenxiang Yinzi (see Vomiting and Diarrhea section) combined with Pingwei Wan (see Hiccups section). If not yet thirsty, give decoction pills according to size, allowing one or two bowel movements. For white phlegm (see Acute/Slow Convulsion Wind section), use Chenxiang Yinzi and Pingwei Wan as before. If still restless, unable to sleep at night, with rapid breathing, it is a fatal sign.
*Yu Jue* states: There are two syndromes of infantile cholera. If due to Stomach cold, with no high fever but slight warmth, and blue-yellow complexion, Yín Bái Sǎn (Silver White Powder) should be used to regulate Qi. If with abdominal pain, frequent panting, spitting clear water, unstable complexion, and intermittent dry heaving, Lúhuì Wán (Aloe Pill) should be used to expel parasites, followed by Qi regulation. The song says: Cholera stems from injured Stomach Qi, attacked by cold and heat harming Spleen Qi. Whether due to accumulation, parasites, cold, or heat, empty Stomach causes unusual dry heaving.
*Shibi Jing* Song of Thirty-Six Types of Cholera with Vomiting and Diarrhea:
First observe blue-yellow complexion, indicating wind-heat in the Spleen. Hair standing upright causes fear; unceasing eye-opening indicates phlegm. Rebellious Stomach Qi shows wind-like spasms; suspect white lips and dry mouth. Sores on the tongue indicate extreme heat; passing fourteen days leads to death.
If the face is entirely blue-white, it is cold-phlegm in the Stomach, also causing vomiting/diarrhea. If yellow-red, it is heat accumulation in the Stomach, also causing cholera. Both deficiency and excess of the Stomach present these signs; treatment depends on the specific syndrome. If untreated, dry mouth and extreme thirst occur; if spasms and rebellious Qi appear, sores in the mouth, and mouth full like egg white, it is incurable, death within two to three days.
