According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* (Source of Diseases by Chao Yuanfang) regarding the condition of infants and children not growing teeth: Teeth are the culmination of bones, nourished by marrow. If an infant has insufficient congenital endowment, the marrow cannot fill the teeth and bones, thus causing a long delay in tooth eruption.
*Qianjin Yi Fang* (Supplement to the Thousand Golden Formulas) records: Bamboo or wood pieces soaked in urine are used to treat infants not growing teeth. Scrape these pieces on the first day of the New Year and apply them to the gums; teeth will grow immediately.
*Waitai Miyao* (Essential Prescriptions from the Imperial Library) cites another prescription from *Duan Ju*: Take three to seven feces of female mice. Rub one piece on the gum line until finished; teeth should erupt within twenty-one days. Female mouse feces are characterized by a pointed head. *Qianjin Fang* also adopts this method. *Yang Shi Chan Ru Fang* uses thirty pieces, specifying female mouse feces that are pill-shaped at both ends.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* (Imperial Grace Formulas of the Taiping Era) for treating infants not growing teeth, or teeth failing to regrow after falling out:
Take two to seven black beans found in cow dung. Gently remove the skin from the tip of the bean. Use the opened end of this bean to apply to the gum line. Frequent use should be effective.
Zhang Huan stated: Those with insufficient congenital Kidney Qi have weak marrow. Since bones are the terminus of marrow, insufficient marrow cannot fill the teeth, resulting in delayed tooth eruption. The Xiang Fu Dan formula is suitable.
Da Xiang Fu Zi (Atractylodes Rhizoma, selected clean, peeled) Chen Xiang (Aquilaria Lignum Resinatum, each 1 liang) Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) Ci Shu Fen (Feces Mus Musculae Feminae, burnt to ash) Gan Chan (Bufo Viridis, burnt to ash. Each of the above 0.5 liang).
Pulverize the above ingredients and sieve into powder. Mix with 4 liang of sheep marrow, boiled until soft, to form pills the size of millet seeds. Administer ten pills per dose, washed down with Moschus decoction. Adjust dosage according to the child's age and size.
According to *Chao Shi Bing Yuan* regarding the condition of infants and children not growing hair: The Foot-Shaoyin meridian is the channel of the Kidney, and its flourishing manifests in the hair. If an infant has innate insufficiency leading to deficient Blood and Qi of the Shaoyin, the hair will be sparse, thin, or fail to grow. Some cases result from scalp sores causing alopecia; this is due to damage to the Blood, where diminished Blood and Qi fail to nourish the hair.
*Qianjin Fang* single-ingredient Qiu Ye formula for treating infants not growing hair on the head:
Crush Qiu Ye (Catalpae Folium) to extract juice and apply to the scalp; hair will grow immediately. (*Qianjin Yi Fang* specifies taking the center of the Qiu Ye leaf, wringing out the juice for application.)
*Qianjin Fang* formula for treating infants not growing hair on the head:
Burn crucian carp to ash, grind into powder, mix with soy sauce, and apply.
*Qianjin Yi Fang* formula for treating sparse hair not growing:
First wash the bald area with vinegar-rice water. Rub vigorously with raw cloth to generate heat. Apply pig lard mixed with finely ground iron powder, boiled three times, during the twelfth lunar month. Apply three times daily.
*Waitai Miyao* records Shen Shi’s Liao Tou Feng Wu Zhuo Gao, which promotes rapid hair growth making it black, shiny, and smooth; it also treats infants not growing hair.
Wu Zhuo Cao (Euphorbiae Humifusae Herba), Mang Cao (Radix Dichroae), Shi Nan Xing Cao (Hederae Helicis Folium), Xu Duan (Dipsaci Radix), Zao Jia (Gleditsiae Fructus, peeled and seeded, roasted), Ze Lan (Lycopersici Herba), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, each 2 liang), Xin Yi Ren (Magnoliae Flos, 1 liang), Bo Ye (Platycladi Cacumen, chopped, half sheng), Zhu Zhi (Suis Medulla, 2 sheng).
Soak the above ten herbs in vinegar overnight. Decoct in a pot placed on an east-facing stove using pig fat as the medium, heating with reed fire. Prepare three piles of earth. After each boiling episode, place one pile of earth underneath. When boiling subsides, resume heating until the third boil. Place over all three earth piles. Once the ointment is ready, filter dregs and store in a copper vessel. Move it repeatedly to the north side of the eaves drip line, burying it under the seventh drip from the west end. After thirty days, the medicine is complete. For infants, shave the head and apply three times daily. For adults, wash the hair and apply; this is very effective.
*Ben Cao* states: Condensed steam water from steaming rice promotes hair growth. Collect this water while cooking rice and use it to wash the head to make hair long, dense, black, and shiny. If difficult to obtain in large quantities, comb the hair daily. For infants, gradual hair growth will be beneficial.
*Tu Jing Ben Cao* states: For infant white tinea capitis (Bai Tu) with no hair growth, crush Ulmus cortex powder and apply mixed with vinegar.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* for treating infant brain guan syndrome where hair falls out in tufts from the root, along with white tinea capitis and hair loss: Use Sheng Fa Shen Xiao Hei Dou Gao.
Hei Dou (Glycines Soja Seed), Ju Sheng (Sesami Indici Fructus, each 3 fen), He Li Le Pi (Terminaliae Chebulae Pericarpium, 1 liang).
Pulverize and sieve the herbs. Mix evenly with water, place in a bamboo tube, seal the mouth with tangled hair, and roast over ash to extract oil. Store in porcelain. Wash head with rice water and Zao Jia decoction, dry, and apply twice daily. Hair grows in ten days.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* another formula:
Ge Gen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Zhu Zhi, Yang Zhi (each 2 liang).
Decoct gently in a pot until forming an ointment. Store in a porcelain box. Apply one qian to the head, massaging twice daily. Effective within five to seven applications.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* for infant white tinea capitis, hair loss, dryness, and pain: Use Xiang Ru Jian.
Chen Xiang Ru (Elsholtziae Herba, 2 liang), Hu Fen (Cerussa, 1 liang), Zhu Zhi (0.5 liang).
Decoct Xiang Ru in one da zhen of water, reduce to one-third volume, filter dregs. Mix in Hu Fen and Zhu Zhi. Apply to the head twice daily.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* for infant alopecia with itching: Man Jing Zi San.
Grind Man Jing Zi (Brassicae Pekinensis Semen) into powder, mix with pig lard, and apply to the bald area.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* another formula:
Burn Guan Zhong (Cyrtomii Rhizoma) to ash, grind finely. Mix with oil and apply.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* another formula:
Take one sheng of Ma Zi (Cannabis Fructus), roast until black, press to extract oil, and apply to the head.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* another formula:
Wash with salt water, then apply mixture of raw oil and cattail/reed ash.
*Tai Ping Sheng Hui Fang* another formula:
Apply Yan Zhi (Anseris Griseae Medulla); this is excellent.
*Ying Ru Fang* for treating infants not growing hair:
Xiong Bai (Ursi Adeps): Apply directly.
*Ying Ru Fang* another formula:
Tao Ye (Persicae Folium): Extract juice and apply.
*Ying Ru Fang* further states:
Boil seven eggs, peel off the whites, simmer until juices emerge, and apply the liquid.
Zhang Huan stated: Insufficient congenital Qi and Blood fail to nourish the hair, causing hair loss. This is incorrectly termed "guan disease." The Ju Sheng Dan formula is suitable.
Ju Sheng (Sesami Indici Fructus, 1 he, separately ground), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed and dried), Sheng Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, each 1 liang, pulverized and sieved), Hu Fen (Cerussa, 0.5 liang, finely ground).
Grind uniformly, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of millet seeds. Administer ten pills per dose with decocted black bean soup. Can also be dissolved and applied topically. Adjust dosage based on the child's age and size.
