The first method is **Biao Fa** (Releasing the Exterior via sweating). The symptoms include a floating pulse, fever, body pain, aversion to cold, stiffness of the spine and neck, asthma and cough, headache, rigidity and cramping of the four limbs, normal mouth and tongue, non-deep pulse, no thirst, and normal urination and defecation. The second method is **Jie Ji** (Relieving the Muscle Layer). The pulse is long at all three positions (Cun, Guan, Chi), with eye pain and dry nose, holding water in the mouth without swallowing. The primary formula is **Gegen Tang** (Kudzu Root Decoction), and those belonging to the category of Shengma and Gegen;
The third method is **He Jie** (Harmonizing). The pulse is neither floating nor deep, with alternating chills and fever, vomiting, hypochondriac pain, fullness in the chest and epigastrium, deafness, head sweating or night sweats, dizziness, and bitter taste in the mouth. The primary formulas belong to the category of **Baitu Tang** (White Tiger Decoction), **Xiao Chengqi Tang** (Minor Order the Qi Decoction), **Liuyi San** (Six-to-One Powder), and **Shunqi Tang** (Regulate Qi Decoction);
The fifth method is **Jiu Li** (Rescuing the Interior). The pulse is deep and weak, with diarrhea of undigested food, clear and profuse urination, cold limbs, vomiting of clear water and saliva, aversion to cold on the back, curling up in sleep and somnolence, retraction of the scrotum, cyanosis of the fingernails, expulsion of roundworms, dry retching, curled tongue, rigidity of the four limbs, and body pain as if beaten by a club. The primary formulas belong to the category of **Lizhong Tang** (Regulate the Middle Decoction), **Sini Tang** (Frigid Extremities Decoction), **Zhenwu Tang** (True Warrior Decoction), and **Baitong Tang** (White Connective Decoction).
**Mahuang Tang** (Ephedra Decoction): Treats Taiyang channel cold damaging Ying (Nutritive) blood, characterized by fever, anhidrosis, and aversion to cold.
Clean Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), tender Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Guang Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (equal parts).
Decoct in water, take hot. Resolution occurs upon sweating.
**Guizhi Tang** (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Treats Taiyang channel wind damaging Wei (Defensive) qi, characterized by fever, spontaneous sweating, and aversion to wind.
Tender Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (1.5 qian), Hang Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (2 qian), Lao Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (1.5 qian), Da Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae) (5 pieces), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (1 qian).
Decoct in water, take hot. A slight sweat should be obtained; profuse sweating must be avoided.
**Da Qinglong Tang** (Great Azure Dragon Decoction): Treats Taiyang syndrome presenting with wind pulse.
Clean Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), Shu Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 3 qian), tender Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (1 qian), Guang Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) (5 pieces), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (4 qian), Lao Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (1 slice), Da Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae) (1 piece).
Decoct in water, take warm. One must fear excessive sweating.
When Taiyang syndrome presents with a wind pulse, it indicates headache, body heat, anhidrosis, and aversion to cold, but the pulse is not tight but rather slow. This is a pattern of Cold damage combined with Wind strike, hence Mahuang and Guizhi are combined. When Wind and Cold are strong externally, the body's Yang becomes constrained and transforms into internal heat, which is why Shigao is added. Named "Great Azure Dragon," it signifies its rapid action like bringing clouds and rain. However, if not used properly, it can cause the disaster of Yang collapse, leading to muscle twitching (Jinti Rouyue). How can one not be cautious!
**Xiao Qinglong Tang** (Minor Azure Dragon Decoction): Treats unresolved exterior syndrome with fluid retention in the heart region, dry retching, or cough, or choking, or asthma.
Clean Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), tender Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Baishao Radix Paeoniae Alba), Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata) (each 1.2 qian above), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata), Bai Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secati) (Prepared Dried Ginger), Beixixin (Radix Asari) (each 0.5 qian), Bei Wuweiizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis) (12 grains).
Decoct in water, take slowly when temperature is appropriate.
Unresolved exterior means headache and body heat persist. Drinking too much water when thirsty causes fluid retention in the heart region. Cough, choking, and asthma result from Cold-fluid attacking the Lung. Dry retching is defined as sound without matter. In this formula, Mahuang, Guizhi, and Gancao release the exterior; Banxia, Xixin, and Ganjiang disperse fluid retention; Baishao harmonizes Yin blood; Wuweizi astringes Lung Qi. "Azure Dragon" refers to the Wood Spirit of the East, governing the development and growth of all things.
**Gegen Tang** (Kudzu Root Decoction): Treats Yangming Stomach channel disease, characterized by eye pain, dry nose, and insomnia.
Fen Gan Ge (Radix Puerariae Lobatae) (1.5 qian), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), tender Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (each 0.6 qian), Clean Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae) (de-jointed, 1 qian), fresh Congbai (Stem Allii Cepae) (3 stems), Lao Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (1 slice), Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae) (1 piece).
Decoct in clean water, take hot. If there is aversion to cold, add Mahuang; if there is aversion to wind, add Guizhi. If it is a typical Yangming Fu organ disease, with no aversion to cold, sweating, and thirst, **Baitu Tang** (White Tiger Decoction) should be used.
**Shengma Gegen Tang** (Cimicifuga and Kudzu Root Decoction): Treats pathogen in the Yangming channel, with anhidrosis, aversion to cold, and fever.
Lv Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae), Fen Gan Ge (Radix Puerariae Lobatae), Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata).
Decoct in clean water, take hot.
This formula disperses the exterior and removes cold, harmonizes blood and regulates Qi, thus it is used for patients with smallpox/variolous diseases.
**Xingxing San** (Xingxing Powder): See previous section on Infantile Cold Damage.
**Xiao Chaihu Tang** (Minor Bupleurum Decoction): Treats Shaoyang Gallbladder channel disease, characterized by deafness, hypochondriac pain, alternating chills and fever, and bitter taste.
Bei Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) (3 qian), Guan Jian Shen (Radix Ginseng), Pian Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Fa Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (each 1 qian), Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (1 slice), Da Zao (Fructus Jujubae) (1 piece as guide).
Decoct in water and take.
Note: This channel has no exit or entry paths; sweating and purging are contraindicated. Only harmonization with this decoction is suitable. If accompanied by Yangming syndrome, add Gegen and Shaoyao to this formula; if aversion to cold etc. persists, use **Da Chaihu Tang** (Major Bupleurum Decoction).
The Taiyang channel is the outermost layer of the exterior, running along the back; the Yangming channel is the inner layer of the exterior, running along the front of the body; the Shaoyang channel is half-exterior and half-interior, running along the sides of the ribs. Beyond this, the Shaoyin, Taiyin, and Jueyin channels all enter the Zang organs to become interior.
**Da Chaihu Tang** (Major Bupleurum Decoction): Treats residual exterior symptoms with urgent interior symptoms, requiring simultaneous sweating and purging.
Bei Chaihu (Radix Bupleuri) (1.5 qian), Pian Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (1 qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (1 qian), Fa Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata) (0.8 qian), Jin Zhuang Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (0.7 qian), Xiao Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) (0.4 qian), Lao Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (3 slices), Da Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae) (1 piece).
Decoct in water, take hot on an empty stomach.
**Baitu Tang** (White Tiger Decoction): Treats high fever, severe thirst, sweating, and a flooding pulse. Not suitable for those without thirst.
Shu Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (3 qian), Clean Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (2 qian), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (1 qian), Wan Jingmi (Oryza Sativa) (a pinch).
Decoct in clean water until concentrated, take hot.
Pathogen enters the interior, creating excess heat, causing aversion to heat; heat forcing outward causes sweating; interior dryness causes thirst; pathogen excess causes large pulse; pathogen in Yangming causes long pulse. Baitu represents the Metal Spirit of the West. This name implies that the command of Autumn Metal should prevail to extinguish the inflammation of Summer Fire. This is the correct formula for fever in summer heat diseases. Shigao is a cold medicine, pale and acrid, capable of inducing sweating and promoting urination. It is only usable when the patient has profuse sweating, thirst, dry teeth, and a flooding-long pulse. If there is no sweating, and the pulse is deficient and not flooding-long, or completely absent on heavy pressure, even with high fever and thirst resembling Baitu Tang syndrome, this is actually Spleen-Stomach Qi deficiency and Yuan Yang insufficiency. Misuse will be fatal.
**Tiaowei Chengqi Tang** (Regulate the Stomach Order the Qi Decoction): Treats Taiyang-Yangming combination, no aversion to cold, but aversion to heat, constipation with vomiting, and tidal fever at dusk.
Jin Zhuang Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), Bai Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (2 qian), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (1 qian).
Five slices of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), decoct in water, take hot.
**Da Chengqi Tang** (Major Order the Qi Decoction): Treats Yangming-Taiyin combination with delirium, no bowel movement for 5-6 days, abdominal pain, irritability and thirst, and also Shaoyin syndrome with dry tongue and mouth, tidal fever at dusk, and deep-solid pulse.
Jin Zhuang Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (5 qian), Chuan N Houpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (2 qian), Xiao Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) (2 qian), Bai Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (3 qian), Lao Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (5 slices).
Boil in water, take hot.
**Xiao Chengqi Tang** (Minor Order the Qi Decoction): Treats no bowel movement for 6-7 days, abdominal distension and fullness, disease in Taiyin; no exterior syndrome, no aversion to cold after sweating, tidal fever, delirium, and asthma.
Jin Zhuang Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (3 qian), Chuan N Houpu (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) (2 qian), Xiao Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus) (2 qian).
Decoct in clean water until concentrated and boiling, take hot.
**Taoren Chengqi Tang** (Peach Kernel Order the Qi Decoction): Treats resolved exterior syndrome, black stool, free urination, indicating Blood Stasis syndrome.
Jin Zhuang Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (2.5 qian), Bai Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (1.5 qian), tender Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (1 qian), Guang Taoren (Semen Persicae) (10 grains), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (1 qian).
Decoct in water until boiling hot, take on an empty stomach.
When using any of the three Chengqi formulas, one must press the patient's body from chest to lower abdomen. If there is indeed hardness that cannot be touched, and observing whether the tongue coating is dry or slippery, one can then distinguish: for urgent purging, use Da Chengqi Tang; for mild administration, use Xiao Chengqi Tang; for gently harmonizing Stomach Qi, use Tiaowei Chengqi Tang. This applies the sage method of Zhang Zhongjing.
**Xiao Jianzhong Tang** (Minor Construct the Middle Decoction): Treats acute abdominal pain in cold damage due to disharmony of Yin and Yang.
Tender Guizhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi) (1 qian), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (2 qian), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (1 qian), Xin Yi Tang (Malt Sugar) (5 spoons), Lao Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (5 slices), Da Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae) (3 pieces).
Decoct in clean water until concentrated, take when half-hungry.
For Yin syndrome abdominal pain with constipation, use Guizhi Shaoyao Tang; for severe abdominal pain, use Guizhi Dahuang Tang; for abdominal pain with spontaneous diarrhea and clear/white urine, use Sini Tang and Lizhong Tang.
**Huangqi Jianzhong Tang** (Astragalus Construct the Middle Decoction): Treats body pain after sweating in cold damage, with slow and weak pulse.
Zhi Huangqi (Astragali Radix) (1.5 qian), Fried Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (2 qian), Qinghua Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (1 qian), Lao Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (5 slices), Da Hongzao (Fructus Jujubae) (5 pieces).
After decoction, add 3 spoons of Yi Tang (Malt Sugar), boil once more, and take. Do not use if there is loose stool or vomiting.
Profuse sweating damages Yin Qi, failing to nourish sinews and bones, causing pain; Yang deficiency causes slow pulse; post-sweating causes weak pulse. This formula establishes Middle Qi, allowing growth and nourishment of Ying and Wei, and circulation of fluids, thereby strengthening the exterior and curing body pain.
**Lizhong Tang** (Regulate the Middle Decoction): Treats immediate Taiyin disease, spontaneous diarrhea without thirst, excess cold and abdominal pain.
Renshen Pian (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian), Biaozhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (3 qian), Pao Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Praeparatum) (1 qian), Zhi Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata) (1 qian).
Decoct in clean water until concentrated, take slowly when warm or cool.
**Zhenwu Tang** (True Warrior Decoction): Treats excessive sweating leading to palpitations in the heart region, dizziness, body tremors, and feeling as if falling to the ground.
Shu Fupian (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Baishao (Radix Paeoniae Alba), Bai Fuling (Poria) (each 2 qian), Biaozhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (1.5 qian), Lao Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens) (2 qian).
Decoct in clean water until concentrated, take when temperature is appropriate.
Heart loss of body fluids and Kidney Qi attempting to assault the Heart cause palpitations; sweating depletes Yang, causing internal movement of deficient pathogens, leading to dizziness and trembling. Zhenwu is the Northern Deity, governing Water and Fire, preventing dragons from rising.
**Baitong Tang** (White Connective Decoction): Treats Shaoyin diarrhea with absence of pulse.
Shu Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (3 qian), Bai Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secati) (1.5 qian), fresh Congbai (Stem Allii Cepae) (3 stems).
Decoct in clean water until concentrated, take cold.
Shaoyin governs the consolidation of urination and defecation. When Cold pathogen resides there, it loses control, causing diarrhea. Congbai unblocks Yang Qi; Jiang and Fu dissipate Yin Cold. Being able to dissipate and unblock fulfills the function of Shaoyin. If diarrhea continues after taking this, with recurrence of cold extremities, absent pulse, dry retching, and irritability, add half cup of Tongbian (Child Urine) and 5 spoons of Zhuyedan (Porci Bile). If the pulse slowly reconnects, life is saved; if the pulse suddenly bursts out, death ensues.

Disease originating in Yin should have no fever. Fever indicates transmission between Taiyang exterior and interior. Shaoyin deficiency allows Taiyang pathogen to enter directly via collaterals. The remaining pathogen stays as exterior heat. Thus, Mahuang is used to induce sweating, while Xixin and Fuzi warm the interior. Internal and external attack together subdue the evil pathogen.
**Sini Tang** (Frigid Extremities Decoction): Treats extreme Yang hyperactivity, blocked blood vessels, and cold extremities below elbows and knees. In Yin syndrome, cold extends above elbows and below knees.

Decoct in clean water until concentrated, take away from heat.
Yang pathogen transmits to Yin, creating interior knotted heat. Yang cannot extend to the four extremities, causing cold extremities. Zhishi breaks Qi knots and removes interior heat; Chaihu raises true Yang and reverses cold extremities; Gancao harmonizes discordant Qi; Baishao gathers displaced Yin. Cold damage prioritizes Yang. Sini shows signs of Yin advancing. Using bitter-cold purgatives would further deplete Yang, hence this formula is used.

Yang syndrome mistreated with warming, missed sweating, missed purgation, early purgation letting heat enter Stomach, or late purgation leaving heat in Stomach, all lead to eruptions. Red cases can be treated with these two formulas; purple-black cases are fatal.
There are internal injury eruptions where Stomach Qi is extremely deficient, and fire floats externally. Tonification to descend fire is required, yet many fail to recognize this pattern.
