The Classics state: All meridians belong to the eyes. It also states: The Green Qi of the East enters and connects with the Liver, opening through the eyes. Although the eyes are the orifice of the Liver, all five Zang organs are present within them, serving as the residence of Shen (Spirit). Thus, the sclera (white part) belongs to the Lung, the iris/pupil (black part) belongs to the Liver, the pupil belongs to the Kidney, the canthi (corners) belong to the Heart, and the upper and lower eyelids belong to the Spleen. The Five Zang organs correspond to the Five Colors, each having its specific governance. The Heart governs red; intense red indicates Heart Excess Heat, while slight red indicates Heart Deficient Heat. The Liver governs green; intense green indicates Liver Heat, while pale green indicates Liver Deficiency. The Spleen governs yellow; intense yellow indicates Spleen Heat, while pale yellow indicates Spleen Deficiency. Eyes lacking luster, and those with excessive sclera and insufficient iris/pupil, indicate insufficiency of both Liver and Kidney.
Redness inside the eyes is due to accumulated heat in the Heart Meridian attacking upwards. It is appropriate to drain Bing Fire (Heart Fire) via urination, using Daochi San (Guiding Out Red Powder) added with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix).
Yellow color inside the eyes indicates Spleen Heat, appropriate to use Xiehuang San (Drain Yellow Powder); swelling of upper and lower eyelids indicates Wind-Heat in the Spleen Meridian, treated similarly as above.
Frequent blinking indicates Wind in the Liver. Whether new or chronic disease, if Liver Wind enters the eyes, causing sensations of wind blowing from all directions, which the child cannot bear, thus resulting in frequent blinking. Use Xieqing Wan (Drain Blue Pill).
Staring straight ahead indicates Heat in the Liver. Heat qi enters the eyes, obstructing the sinews and vessels, causing tension at both corners of the eyes and inability to move, thus resulting in staring. Use Xieqing Wan (Drain Blue Pill).
Infants born with eyes closed is due to Fetal Heat. Internally take Shengdihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction); externally wash the eyes with Gentiana Decoction seven times a day, lest it become lingering and damage vision.
Redness and ulceration of eyelids shortly after birth is due to incomplete cleaning during delivery, allowing filth to invade and soak the eye corners, causing persistent redness and ulceration. Use Zhenjin San (True Gold Powder).
Chronic cough in children leading to swollen and darkened eye sockets, resembling injury, with sclera red as blood, is called Blood Eye. Internally take Xiebai San (Drain White Powder); externally use application method.
Inability to see objects within months of birth is called Que Mu (Bird's Eye/Night Blindness), caused by Liver Deficiency. Use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill), commonly taking cooked liver to press the medicine.
Children with febrile diseases who fear light and prefer darkness have Wind-Heat. It is appropriate to disperse Wind-Heat, using Qingyang Sanhuo Tang (Clear Yang and Dispel Fire Decoction).
