The syndrome of acute convulsion (Ji Jing Feng) mostly occurs in children with robust constitutions. A few days prior to onset, fever appears, causing hot breath from the mouth and nose, constipation, and foul-smelling urine, followed by severe convulsions and phlegm-heat in the throat. In such cases, one should quickly administer:
Qiefeng Baidu San (Fear-Dispelling and Poison-Vanquishing Powder)
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Qianhu (Peucedani Radix), Chongtui (Mantis Ootheca, feet removed), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Suhé (Perilla Fructus or Leaf), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (each 1 qian); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix), Danning (Arisaema cum Bile), Baijie (Sinapis Semen) (each 3 fen); Dengxin (Junci Medulla) as a guiding herb.
If stool is unobstructed, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma); if urination is obstructed, add Mutong (Akebiae Caulis); if there is phlegm-wheezing, add Suzi (Perillae Fructus) and Laifuzi (Radish Seed).
Baolong Wan (Embracing Dragon Pill), used to treat convulsions caused by acute convulsion.
Formula: Dannanxing (Arisaema cum Bile) (1 liang), Zhuhu (Bambusae Fructus) (3 qian), Chencha (Cinnabar, washed) (1.5 qian), Xionghuang (Realgar) (1.5 qian), Shexiang (Moschus) (2 fen). Make into pills using Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction), take with Suhé Tang (Perilla Decoction). After taking the medicine, if phlegm is vomited out, the disease will be cured.
Xieqing Wan (Draining Green Pill), used to treat acute convulsion due to hyperactive Liver Wood generating wind, resulting in deviation of the mouth and eyes; also treats internal heat in children, such as fire-diarrhea with sauce-colored stools, with miraculous efficacy.
Formula: Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhiren (Gardeniae Semen), Shujun (Prepared Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Dancao (Gentianae Radix) (equal parts).
Make into pills using wine and water, take with Chaqing (Tea Liquor); decocting as soup is also acceptable.
The syndrome of chronic convulsion (Man Jing) mostly arises after vomiting and diarrhea, or following prolonged illness, or due to excessive purging and descending treatments for acute convulsion. The root cause is deficiency and damage of the Spleen and Stomach. Symptoms include unconsciousness and panting, persistent high fever, alternating chills and fever, pale yellowish-green complexion, clear urine and stool, even vomiting and diarrhea, cold limbs, rattling phlegm in the throat, opisthotonos (body arched backward like a bow), and twitching of hands and feet. In such cases, one should quickly administer:
Zhuhan Dangjing Tang (Cold-Expelling and Convulsion-Shaking Decoction), used for children with originally deficient constitutions, or those who mistakenly took cold-cooling herbs, leading to diarrhea and vomiting transforming into chronic convulsion. It is indicated when hands are cold, lips are white, and stools are clear. It is most suitable for treating these conditions and also for plum-blossom pain and abdominal cramps.
Formula: Baihujiao (White Pepper), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, stir-fried), Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) (each 1 qian), Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos) (10 buds). Grind the above four ingredients into fine powder. Decoct Zaoxintu (Caolistus) in water, clarify it, use half a large teacup of this liquid to decoct the powder. Administer frequently. After taking this, follow with Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) for miraculous effects.
Zhuhan Dangjing Tang is best combined with Zhenwei Zhibao Lingdan Wan (True and Precious Treasure Spirit Pill). For critical cases, check the temperature of the child's breath and the color of urine (green/yellow). Regardless of thirst or dry tongue, if the breath feels slightly cool and stools are clear, use this formula rapidly for divine results. These are my personal experiences, having treated many people. However, for cases of extreme heat mimicking cold (true heat false cold), characterized by dry eye discharge, red urine, thirst with strong qi, light body, and open eyes, do not take this formula.
Jiawei Lizhong Dihuang Tang (Modified Regulate-the-Middle and Rehmannia Decoction), this formula assists Qi and nourishes Blood, expels disease, and restores Yang. It specifically treats children whose spirit is depleted, blood and Qi severely damaged, and extremely emaciated, capable of reversal, truly possessing the power to restore vitality.
Formula: Shudi (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix), Danggui, Gouqi (Lycii Fructus), Zaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, arrow-roasted), Jiaozhu (Stir-fried Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Dangshen (Codonopsis Radix, honey-roasted) (each 2 qian), Zaopi (Corni Fructus), Rougui, Guozhi (Psoraleae Fructus), Ganjiang (Dried Ginger, stir-fried), Zhicao (Honey-processed Glycyrrhizae Radix) (each 1 qian), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger, 3 slices), Dazao (Jujubae Fructus, 3 pieces), Hutaó (Walnut, 1 piece) as guides. Externally, boil 2 liang of Zaoxintu in water to decoct the medicine; adding 5 fen of Xiongpian (Realgar slice) is also acceptable. If coughing, add Baihe (Lilii Bulbus) and Jinyingzi (Cherokee Rose Hip) each 1 qian; if high fever persists, add Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 1 qian; if diarrhea continues, add Dingxiang 6 fen.
Jingyue Weiguan Jian (Jingyue Stomach-Gate Decoction), used to treat chronic convulsion with non-stop diarrhea due to Spleen deficiency, and occasional mild abdominal pain.
Formula: Shudi (3 qian), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Bian Dou (Faba Semen, stir-fried), Jiaozhu (each 2 qian), Heijiang (Blackened Ginger), Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus), Zhicao (each 6 fen).
Jingyue Liuwei Huiyang Yin (Jingyue Six-Ingredient Return-Yang Drink), used to treat cold limbs in chronic convulsion.
Formula: Dangshen, Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix), Ganjiang (each 1 qian), Shudi (4 qian), Danggui (Earth-stir-fried, 2 qian). If sweating is profuse, add Jianzhu Gen (Bamboo Root) 2 qian; if diarrhea occurs, add Jiaozhu 2 qian.
