It is natural for a newborn infant to suckle; if they do not suckle, there must be a reason. If the foul meconium in the abdomen has not been completely discharged, or if the fetus was constitutionally cold during gestation, these are the causes. For cases of retained meconium, Yi Nian Jin (One-Pinch Gold) is effective; for failure to suckle due to fetal coldness, Yun Qi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) should be used first. If accompanied by a cyanotic complexion and cold, inverted limbs, this indicates a deficiency-cold syndrome, and Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) should be administered.
[Note] "Failure to suckle" refers to the newborn's refusal to breastfeed immediately after birth. There are two causes, which must be distinguished.
If the meconium in the umbilical region has not been expelled after birth, it can cause abdominal distension, shortness of breath, vomiting, and refusal to suckle in infants. Yi Nian Jin (One-Pinch Gold) should be used to treat this. If the mother consumed excessive cold and cooling foods during pregnancy, transmitting this qi to the fetus, the infant will likely suffer from abdominal pain, excessive crying, and a bluish-white complexion. In such cases, Yun Qi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder) is indicated. If limb inversion (cold extremities) occurs, Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction) is the primary treatment.
Yi Nian Jin (One-Pinch Gold)
Rhei Radix et Rhizoma (raw), Strychni Semen (black), Strychni Semen (white), Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Arecae Semen (equal parts).
Grind into a fine powder. Take a small amount each time, mixed with honey water for oral administration.
Yun Qi San (Harmonizing Qi Powder)
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix) (1 qian each), Paojiang (Prepared Zingiberis Rhizoma), Sharen (Amomi Fructus), Zhigancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen each), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) (3 fen).
Grind together into a fine powder. Take 5 fen per dose, mixed with decoction of red dates.
Li Zhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction)
Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma (stir-fried with soil), Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gancao (Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Add flesh of red dates, decoct in water, and take orally.
[Formula Song] Li Zhong Tang consists of Ginseng and Dried Ginger, combined with Atractylodes and Licorice as a decoction; it should be taken for various diseases caused by fetal coldness, and is especially suitable for symptoms of failure to suckle and cold limbs.
When an infant is born with eyes closed and unable to open them, it is due to spleen heat transmitted from the mother. Internally administering Di Huang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) is most excellent, and externally washing the eyes with Xiong Dan (Bear Bile) solution yields miraculous results.
[Note] When a newborn’s eyes do not open, it is because the pregnant woman did not regulate her diet, indulging in rich and strong flavors. The resulting heat toxin steams upward, causing heat to accumulate in the fetus's spleen. Since the eyelids belong to the spleen, their meridians become tight and bound, preventing the eyes from opening. Internal administration of Sheng Di Huang Tang (Raw Rehmannia Decoction) and external washing with Xiong Dan Tang (Bear Bile Decoction) will lead to self-healing.
Sheng Di Huang Tang (Raw Rehmannia Decoction)
Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Gancao (Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma).
Decoct in water and take orally.
[Formula Song] Eyes closed and unable to open are formed by fetal heat; Sheng Di Huang Tang contains Chishao and Chuanxiong, along with Danggui, Tianhuafen, Shengdi, and Gancao; decoct in water and take quickly without delay.
Xiong Dan Washing Method
Xiongdan (Bovis Calculus), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (small amounts of each).
Pour boiling water over them to steep/wash (the act of throwing herbs into water is called "cuì"), and the eyes will naturally open.
