Night crying's cold and heat patterns stem from influences received in the womb; one must clearly distinguish them by observing facial color and body form. Cold involving the Spleen Meridian presents with a cyanotic-white face, cold hands and abdomen, and pain causing the child to curl the waist. A red face and urinary retention indicate Heart Heat. For Heat, use Daochi San (Cinchona Decoction); for Cold, use Gouteng Yin (Uncaria Decoction). If there are no obvious exterior or interior cold-heat signs, the ancient method of Chanhua San (Cicada Flower Powder) is most exquisite.
[Note] Night crying in newborns has two main causes: Spleen Cold and Heart Heat. Both originate from the fetal period. Observing facial color and physical form reveals the condition. If the face is cyanotic-white, hands and abdomen are cold, the infant refuses to suckle milk, and curls the waist unable to extend, it is Spleen Cold, treated primarily with Gouteng Yin (Uncaria Decoction). If the face is red, lips are crimson, body and abdomen are hot, urination is difficult, and the infant is irritable and cries frequently, it is Heart Heat, treated primarily with Daochi San (Cinchona Decoction). If none of the above signs appear, but the infant simply cries frequently, Chanhua San (Cicada Flower Powder) is most appropriate.

Infants born with yellow skin all over like gold suffer from deep-seated damp-heat steaming and toxic influence received in the womb. The treatment method should be to leach out dampness and clear heat simultaneously; Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction) and Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) are miraculous formulas.
[Note] Congenital Jaundice (Taihuang) manifests as yellowing of the whole body and face, with a golden hue. This occurs because the pregnant woman had excessive damp-heat, and the fetus absorbed the mother's toxic heat. Therefore, this condition appears after birth. The treatment principle is to leach out dampness and clear heat, distinguishing severity. For mild yellowing, use Shengdihuang Tang (Fresh Rehmannia Decoction); for deep yellowing, use Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder).
Shengdihuang Tang (Fresh Rehmannia Decoction)
