撮风散
Infants harbor heat in the abdomen, frequently extending their limbs and restless in sleep. Straining causes Qi to rush to the root of the umbilicus, resulting in a flaccid, large, shiny, and protruding umbilicus, forming Umbilical Protrusion (Qitu). Quickly administer Xijiao Xiaodu Yin (Rhinoceros Horn Detoxification Decoction).
Erdou San (Two Beans Powder) can reduce swelling and treat redness. It is strictly forbidden to apply cold-natured medicines on the umbilicus; otherwise, the freezing nature will cause the toxic heat to sink inward, leading to ominous consequences.
[Note] When infants have heat in the abdomen that cannot be dispersed or discharged, they frequently extend their limbs and are restless in sleep. Straining causes Qi to rush into the umbilical area, causing the umbilicus to suddenly swell, turn red, become flaccid, large, shiny, and protruding, named Umbilical Protrusion (Qitu). This is caused by fetal heat, not by improper umbilical cord cutting. Internally administer Xijiao Xiaodu Yin (Rhinoceros Horn Detoxification Decoction), externally apply Erdou San (Two Beans Powder), and the swelling will subside naturally. It is strictly forbidden to apply cold-natured medicines on the umbilicus, for fear that cold coagulation will trap the toxic heat, causing further harm.
Xijiao Xiaodu Yin (Rhinoceros Horn Detoxification Decoction)
Babaozi (Fructus Arctii, stir-fried and crushed) Sheng Gancao (Raw Radix Glycyrrhizae) Jingjie (Herba Schizonepetae) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) Jinyinhua (Flos Lonicerae)
Decoct with water until cooked. Before administration, mix in fine powder of Rhinoceros Cornu (Horn of Rhinoceros) evenly and take orally.
[Formula Song] Add Fructus Arctii to Xijiao Xiaodu Yin (Rhinoceros Horn Detoxification Decoction), along with Radix Glycyrrhizae, Herba Schizonepetae, Radix Saposhnikoviae, and Flos Lonicerae. Grind Rhinoceros Horn finely, mix evenly, and take orally; it has the best effect in eliminating Umbilical Protrusion (Qitu).
Erdou San (Two Beans Powder)
Chixiaodou (Fructus Phaseoli Angularis, skin not removed) Douchi (Semen Sojae Praeparatum) Tiannanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis, skin and navel removed) Bailian (Radix Ampelopsis) (each one qian)
Grind the above into fine powder. Use five fen of juice from Musa basjoo (Banjiao) to mix and apply around the four sides of the umbilicus, twice daily.
Improper umbilical cord cutting leads to Umbilical Wind (Qifeng), caused by contracting wind-cold-damp-water pathogens. For impending onset, Qufeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder) is most effective. If already developed, differentiate the accompanying syndromes clearly: for abdominal distension and constipation, use Heibai San (Black and White Powder); for pale face and cold limbs, use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction); for copious phlegm-saliva, use Jiangcan San (Bombyx Batryticatus Powder); for high fever and red face, use Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction); for vomiting and frequent crying, use Yipi San (Benefit the Spleen Powder); for cyanotic lips, mouth contraction, and wind-locking, use Cuofeng San (Mouth-Contracting Wind-Calming Powder). If the umbilical area is cyanotic and the jaw is locked, it is incurable. Contracting Umbilical Wind within one "la" (seven days) after birth ensures death.
[Note] The umbilicus is the root of life for children, named Shenque (CV8). The acupoint is close to the Three Yin meridians; it prefers warmth and dislikes cold, prefers dryness and dislikes dampness. If umbilical cord cutting strictly follows previous methods, how would Umbilical Wind (Qifeng) arise? It arises only from negligence, allowing water-dampness and wind-cold pathogens to enter the umbilicus. The infant will inevitably suffer from abdominal distension, umbilical swelling, and day-and-night crying, indicating the impending onset of Umbilical Wind (Qifeng). Urgently use Qufeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder) for treatment. If cold pathogens penetrate deeply and Umbilical Wind (Qifeng) has already formed, treat according to the accompanying signs and symptoms. For abdominal distension and hardness with unpassable stool, wind combines with excess syndrome; primarily use Heibai San (Black and White Powder). For blueish face and cold limbs with unformed stool and urine, wind combines with deficiency syndrome; primarily use Lizhong Tang (Regulate the Middle Decoction). For copious phlegm-saliva with rapid breathing and panting, wind combines with phlegm syndrome; primarily use Chen Sha Jiangcan San (Cinnabar and Bombyx Batryticatus Powder). For high body fever, red face, and dry mouth, wind combines with heat syndrome; primarily use Longdan Tang (Gentian Decoction). For blueish face, vomiting, bending waist, and frequent crying, wind combines with cold syndrome; primarily use Yipi San (Benefit the Spleen Powder). For cyanotic lips and continuous convulsions, wind combines with fright syndrome; primarily use Cuofeng San (Mouth-Contracting Wind-Calming Powder). If the edge of the umbilicus is dark green/black and the jaw is locked open, this is internal wind-stirring, which is incurable. Umbilical Wind (Qifeng) appearing within seven days ("one la") after birth is also incurable. "One la" refers to seven days. At seven days old, the infant's blood vessels are not yet consolidated, and the pathogen has entered the zang-organs; medical intervention is of no benefit.
Qufeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder)
Suye (Folium Perillae) Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae) Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae) Houpo (Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, stir-fried with ginger juice) Zhike (Fructus Aurantii, bran-fried) Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, stir-fried) Gouteng (Uncaria rhynchophylla) Sheng Gancao (Raw Radix Glycyrrhizae)
Use fresh ginger as a guiding herb, decoct with water, and take orally.
[Formula Song] For impending Umbilical Wind (Qifeng), use Qufeng San (Wind-Expelling Powder). Follow with Folium Perillae, Radix Saposhnikoviae, Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae, Cortex Magnoliae Officinalis, Fructus Aurantii, and Radix Aucklandiae. Add Bombyx Batryticatus, Uncaria rhynchophylla, and Radix Glycyrrhizae; adding fresh ginger makes it more spiritually effective.
