Spleen deficiency leads to diarrhea immediately after eating, accompanied by abdominal fullness, lack of thirst, and low spirit; with a sallow complexion, anorexia, and emaciation, Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) can achieve remarkable results.
[Note] Spleen-deficiency diarrhea is mostly caused by impaired spleen transportation and transformation. Therefore, diarrhea occurs after every meal, accompanied by abdominal fullness, lack of thirst, diminished spirit, sallow complexion, anorexia, and muscle wasting. It is appropriate to use Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) to tonify the spleen, upon which the diarrhea will naturally cease.
Shenling Baizhu San (Ginseng, Poria, and Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) (See formula in "Spleen Gan" chapter)
Clear qi sinking leads to loss of normal transportation; stool containing undigested food is named Sun-xie (Morning Diarrhea). Use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) to raise and tonify middle qi; for chronic diarrhea with intestinal slipping, use Sishen Wan (Four Spirits Pill).
[Note] Sun-xie (Morning Diarrhea) may be due to wind-pathogen injury in spring, causing clear yang qi to sink and the spleen to lose its transportation function, resulting in undigested food in the stool. Treatment must nourish the spleen earth and use Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) to raise the middle qi. If diarrhea persists for a long time, leading to intestinal slipping and inability to control defecation, use Sishen Wan (Four Spirits Pill) for treatment.
Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction)
Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Huangqi (Astragali Radix, honey-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, stir-fried with loess), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried with loess), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, stir-fried with loess), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, stir-fried with vinegar).
Add fresh ginger and jujube, decoct in water and take orally.
[Formula Song] Sun-xie (Morning Diarrhea) is often due to sinking of clear yang; Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) is most effective. Ginseng, Angelica, Atractylodes, Licorice, and Citrus peel; Cimicifuga and Bupleurum have boundless merit.
Sishen Wan (Four Spirits Pill)
Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus, four liang), Wuweizi (Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus), Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen, baked in flour coating, two liang each), Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked in water and stir-fried, one liang).
Grind the above into fine powder, make pills with fresh ginger and jujube pulp. Take one qian per dose, washed down with rice drink.
Excessive dampness in the spleen and stomach forms Shui-xie (Watery Diarrhea); symptoms include anorexia, loose stools that are mostly yellow, indistinct separation of clear and turbid, and short, scanty, and difficult urination. Use Weiling Tang (Gastrointestinal Regulation Decoction) combined with Shengyang Qushi Tang (Raise Yang and Dispel Dampness Decoction).
[Note] Shui-xie (Watery Diarrhea) is all caused by excessive dampness in the spleen and stomach, leading to the failure to distinguish between clear and turbid, evolving into watery diarrhea. The manifestations include short, scanty, and difficult urination, anorexia, and loose yellow stools. It is appropriate to use Weiling Tang (Gastrointestinal Regulation Decoction) to dispel dampness. If diarrhea persists for a long time without stopping, then use Shengyang Qushi Tang (Raise Yang and Dispel Dampness Decoction) for treatment, and the condition will heal itself.
Weiling Tang (Gastrointestinal Regulation Decoction)
Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-fried), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with fresh ginger), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried with loess), Fuling (Poria), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Zhuling (Polyporus).
Add fresh ginger and red jujube, decoct in water and take orally.
[Formula Song] For damp diarrhea, Weiling Tang (Gastrointestinal Regulation Decoction) is suitable; Cangzhu, Chenpi, and Houpo together; Baizhu, Fuling, and Zhigancao; Rougui, Zexie, and Zhuling shared.
Shengyang Qushi Tang (Raise Yang and Dispel Dampness Decoction)

Add fresh ginger, decoct in water and take orally.
[Formula Song] Raise yang and dispel dampness to stop persistent diarrhea; Cangzhu, Chenpi, and Fangfeng together; Shenqu, Maiya, Zexie, and Licorice; Shengma, Qianghuo, Chaihu, and Zhuling.
