Food-stagnation epilepsy (Shi Xian) arises from excessive food intake causing accumulation in the Zhongwan (CV12, Middle Jiao), where phlegm-heat suddenly becomes abundant, leading to this condition. The patient presents with a sallow complexion, abdominal distension, and foul-smelling vomiting and diarrhea. Treatment should employ Miaosheng Dan (Miraculous Sage Pill) combined with Guntan Wan (Rolling Phlegm Pill) to harmonize the Stomach and calm the mind.
[Note] Food-stagnation epilepsy is located in the Spleen. It occurs because children consume excessive milk and food, causing stagnation in the Zhongwan (CV12, Middle Jiao). Riding on the surge of abundant phlegm-heat, epilepsy forms. Initially, there is a sallow complexion, abdominal distension, and sour, foul-smelling vomiting and diarrhea, which later transform into frequent convulsions. It is appropriate to use Miaosheng Dan (Miraculous Sage Pill) as the primary formula; if phlegm is abundant, Zhu Yi Gun Tan Wan (Cinnabar-Coated Rolling Phlegm Pill) should be used as the primary formula. Subsequently, Qing Re He Wei Wan (Clear Heat and Harmonize Stomach Pill) should be used for regulation. Thus, the stagnation will clear, and the convulsive epilepsy will subside.
Miaosheng Dan (Miraculous Sage Pill)

Grind all into fine powder. Form pills using steamed jujube pulp, sized like tung tree seeds. Take 3–5 pills per dose, dissolved and taken with Mugher Decoction (Costus Root Decoction).

Wind-epilepsy (Feng Xian) occurs when wind invades the meridians after sweating and removing clothes. The eyes appear blue-dark, the face is pale red, and the ten fingers flex and extend as if counting objects. Treatment involves Huafeng Dan (Wind-Dissipating Pill) combined with Qianghuo Niuhuang Ning (Nigella and Calves' Gallstone Calming Agent) to dissipate wind and calm the spirit.
[Note] Wind-epilepsy results from sweating followed by undressing, causing the couli (pores) to open, allowing wind-pathogens to enter through gaps. During an attack, the eyes are greenish-blue and the face is red. Hand movements resemble counting. The treatment method first requires dispersing wind and releasing the exterior. For mild cases, Huafeng Dan (Wind-Dissipating Pill) is the primary formula; for severe cases, Qianghuo Guizhi Tang (Notopterygium and Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is the primary formula. If wind is accompanied by phlegm, Niuhuang Wan (Calves' Gallstone Pill) is the primary formula.
Huafeng Dan (Wind-Dissipating Pill)
Danning (Arisarum Rhizoma prepared with Calves' Gallstone, 2 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Duhuo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw), Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica), Renshen (Ginseng Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, each 1 qian).
Grind all into fine powder. Form pills using refined honey, sized like soap pods. Take one pill per dose, dissolved and taken with Mint Decoction (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba).
Qianghuo Guizhi Tang (Notopterygium and Cinnamon Twig Decoction)
Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw).
Add fresh ginger, decoct in water, and take orally.
[Formula Song] Qianghuo Guizhi Tang treats wind-epilepsy, its efficacy in dispersing wind and purging heat is hard to describe; it contains Qianghuo, Fangfeng, Mahuang, Guizhi, Tianma, and Gancao. Taking it decocted with Dahuang brings natural peace.
Niuhuang Wan (Calves' Gallstone Pill)
Danning (Arisarum Rhizoma prepared with Calves' Gallstone), Quanxie (Scorpio, detoxified), Chantui (Cicadae Periostracum, each 2.5 qian), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Niuhuang (Calves' Gallstone), Baifuzi (Typhonii Rhizoma, raw), Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, stir-fried), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, each 1.5 qian), Shexiang (Moschus, 0.5 fen).
Grind the above into fine powder. Boil jujubes, remove pits and skins, take the pulp, and mix with the powder to form pills sized like mung beans. Take 3–5 pills per dose, dissolved and taken with Ginger Decoction (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens).
