[Tian] For pediatric fox hernia (Huxian Qi), characterized by asymmetry in scrotal size and intermittent movement up and down, roast fourteen spiders until charred, combine with half a liang of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) ingredients (specifically Cinnamomi Ramulus / Gui Zhi), and grind into a powder. Take eight fen per dose, twice daily, mixed with wine; honey pills are also acceptable.
Heisan (Black Powder)
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (each two qian).
Burn the above herbs together to preserve their properties (cun xing), then grind into an extremely fine powder. Mix with bile from a male pig and honey for external application.
For treating ptosis of the testicle (Pianzhui), Fangkui Wan is also suitable. Have the child sit on the ground, and at noon, moxibustion should be applied seven times (zhuang) below the Yintang point on the side where the ptosis occurs. (The composition of Fangkui Wan is unknown.)
If pediatric ptosis is not congenital but acquired later in life, apply moxibustion seven times on the raphe located between the base of the penis and the anterior aspect of the scrotum; it will heal immediately.
[Ming Dynasty Physician] For hernia and testicular ptosis resulting from fetal development or birth trauma. Apply moxibustion three times on the cross-shaped wrinkle behind the scrotal seam. (Moxibustion performed in spring heals in summer; performed in summer heals in winter.)
Lachasan (Wax Tea Powder) Treats pediatric scrotal sores with pain and discharge that persistently fail to heal.
Lacha (Aged Tea), Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) (each five qian), Nifen (Calomel) (a small amount).
Grind the above into powder. First wash the affected area with a decoction of green onion and Sichuan pepper, then mix the powder with sesame oil for external application.
Another prescription treats painful scrotal sores.
First wash with a decoction of Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba), Huaizhi (Locust Twig), Liuzhi (Willow Twig), and Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus). Then, grind Puxiao (Mirabilite) into powder, mix with egg white, and apply externally.
Another prescription treats genital sores with persistent purulent discharge.
Grind Oumeiyu Gu (Sepiae Endoconcha) into a fine powder and dust it directly onto the affected area.
Another prescription: Wash the area with a decoction of Zisu Ye (Perilla Leaf) and also apply the powdered leaf externally; this is effective.
Another prescription treats pediatric genital sores that do not dry up.
Grind Qingfen (Calomel) and Miduoseng (Litharge) into powder and apply as a plaster. If itching occurs, add Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) and Hezi (Chebulae Fructus), burn them to preserve their properties, grind into powder, and mix with the previous powders. First clean the area with rice washing water, then apply this medication.
[Xue Ji] The *Neijing* states: "The Yangming channel is the stomach meridian. The stomach is the sea of the six fu organs, and its qi also moves downward. If Yangming qi rebels and cannot follow its proper pathway, sleeplessness ensues." It also states: "When the stomach is disharmonious, sleep is unsettled."
The body's Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) travels through the yang aspects during the day and the yin aspects at night. Yang governs movement, while yin governs stillness. Upon waking, the hun, po, zhi, and yi disperse among the zang-fu organs, manifest in the eyes and ears, and move through the limbs, serving as the body's instruments of action. Upon sleeping, the shen qi returns to the five zang organs, performing silent, subtle operations. If spleen and stomach qi are robust, the zang-fu organs harmonize, and the essence of food and drink transforms smoothly into peaceful qi. However, if stomach qi rebels, qi and blood become unsuitable, and the zang-fu organs lose their proper residence, leading to insomnia. In such cases, use Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), Yuanzhi (Polygalae Radix), and Suanzaoren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen). For deficiency-heat in the liver and kidneys, use Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill). For insufficient heart blood, use Zhenzhumu Wan (Mother-of-Pearl Pill). For excessive mental exertion, use Guipi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction). For spiritual depletion, use Renshen Yangrong Tang (Ginseng Nourishing the Vigor Decoction). For residual heat after illness, use Suanzaoren Tang. For insomnia due to gallbladder deficiency, use Renshen Zhuye Tang (Ginseng and Bamboo Leaf Decoction). For restlessness due to liver fire, use Jiawei Xiaochaihu Tang (Modified Minor Bupleurum Decoction). For palpitations causing insomnia, use Sijunzi Tang with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) and Suanzaoren. For night crying and fright-induced insomnia, refer to other specific syndromes for detailed differentiation.
Zhongjing's Suanzaoren Tang treats insomnia caused by deficiency-emaciation and empty irritability.
Suanzaoren (Stir-fried, one qian), Gancao (Licorice Root), Zhimu (Stir-fried), Fuling (Poria), Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizome), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (each five fen).
Decoct in water and take orally.
*Benshi Fang*'s Biejia Wan treats insomnia due to gallbladder deficiency and weakness in the four limbs.
Biejia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Suanzaoren (Stir-fried), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Huangqi (Stir-fried), Niuxi (Stir-fried with wine), Renshen (each one liang), Wuweizi (five qian).
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey the size of wutong seeds. Take thirty to forty pills per dose, washed down with warm wine.
*Shenghui Fang* treats bone-steaming consumption fever, irritability, and insomnia. Use three qian of Suanzaoren, decoct in water until cooked, add one clam-shell measure of Dihuang juice (Rehmanniae Radix Juice), and take.
*Benshi Fang*'s Zhenzhumu Wan treats wind-pathogens invading internally due to deficiency in the liver and gallbladder channels, causing the hun to scatter during sleep and lack containment, resembling palpitations and fright.
Zhenzhu (Pearl, separately ground fine, seven qian and half), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shudihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (each one liang and half), Renshen, Suanzaoren (Stir-fried), Baiziren (Biota Seed) (each one liang), Xijiao Xie (Rhinocerotis Cornu Fragment), Fushen (Poria with Hostwood), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), Longchi (Fossilized Bones) (ground, each half liang).
Grind into powder, make pills with refined honey the size of azuki beans, coat with Zhensha (Cinnabar). Take twenty pills per dose, washed down with plain boiled water, once at midday and once at midnight before bed.
Renshen Zhuye Tang treats insomnia due to empty irritability.
Renshen, Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf), Gancao (each two qian), Banxia (Pinelliae Tuber), Xiaomai (Tritici Fructus), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix) (each one qian and five fen).
Take two to three qian per dose, add two slices of ginger and a pinch of Jingmi (Japonica Rice), decoct in water, and take orally.
Renshen Yangrong Tang (see chapter on Night Sweats)
Guipi Tang (see chapter on Palpitations)
