The *Waitai Mi Yao* (Secret Essentials of the Imperial Library) treats infants with unstable breastfeeding, high fever persisting for seven days, red facial complexion, and yellow nasal discharge. There is a fear of developing *Cuokou Feng* (Sucking-Mouth Wind / Tetanus-like condition involving mouth closure) and trismus. Insects resembling snails or yellow-headed white clam shells may be seen in the mouth. Use half a he (approx. 50ml) of *Zhuli* (Bamboo Sap) mixed with a small amount of *Niuhuang* (Calculus Bovis, Ox Gallstone) to administer orally; the disease will heal. Additionally, wiping the mouth with pork meat causes the insects to exit.
Chao Yuanfang stated: If lumps like millet grains suddenly form on the tongue inside an infant's mouth, preventing suckling, it is named *Jin* (Lockjaw). This is caused by fetal heat entering the zang organs, causing the Heart to be excessively heated.
The *Taiping Shenghui Fang* (Imperial Grace Formulas of the Taiping Era) states that newborns must be guarded against three diseases: one is *Cuokou* (Sucking-Mouth), two is *Zhuojin* (Fixed Lockjaw), and three is *Yufeng* (Umbilical Wind). All are acute conditions, with *Zhuojin* being the most severe; if not resolved within one lunar month, death may ensue. Symptoms include tight jaw, unstable feeding, diminishing cry, and drooling (Mao noted accompanying closed eyes). Observers seeing normal urination and defecation might mistakenly attribute this to cold or heat pathogens, not realizing the pathology lies in the throat and tongue, where the condition is extremely serious. Skilled physicians save less than three out of ten cases. If preventive care were taken beforehand, such misfortune would certainly be avoided. Upon observing this syndrome, urgently examine the infant's palate for small spots. First, gently scrape them open with fingernails, then administer formulas such as *Dingming San* (Life-Determining Powder) or *Chensha Quanxie San* (Cinnabar and Whole Scorpion Powder). If trismus persists and oral medications fail, take raw *Nanxing* (Arisaema Cum Bile, Rhizoma Arisaematis Preparatum), remove skin and navel, grind into an ultra-fine powder, mix with a little *Longnao* (Borneolum Syntheticum, Synthetic Borneol). Dip a finger in fresh ginger juice and rub the gums at the molar roots; the mouth will open immediately. Although *Yufeng*, *Cuokou*, and *Jinfeng* differ in presentation, their root cause is identical: generally, internal qi stagnation and blockage. It is advisable to have them drink decocted soybean vinegar juice to expel fetal toxins.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: Newborns have vigorous qi and blood; if even minor ailments occur, purgative therapy should be applied promptly. If not purged in time, they develop into major diseases difficult to treat. Use *Zishuang Wan* (Purple Frost Pill), administered in measured doses.
*Dingming San*: Treats newborn trismus preventing suckling.
*Cantbrua* (Periostracum Cicadae, Cicada Slough) (14 pieces, remove head and legs), *Quanxie* (Scorpio, Whole Scorpion) (27 pieces, detoxified).
Grind all into an ultra-fine powder, add a little *Qingfen* (Calomel, Hydrargyri Chloridum), and mix well. Mix with breast milk and administer.
*Chensha Quanxie San*: Treats newborn trismus.
*Chensha* (Cinnabaris, Cinnabar) (processed by water flotation, half qian), *Quanxie* (Whole Scorpion, detoxified, heads and tails intact, 20 pieces, roasted), *Pengsha* (Borax, Borax), *Longnao* (Borneolum, Borneol), *Shexiang* (Moschus, Musk) (each one zi).
Grind all into an ultra-fine powder. Mix with mother's saliva and apply to the inner lips and teeth, or mix with a little porcine milk and introduce into the mouth.
*Zishuang Wan* (Formula see "Bianzheng" chapter).
[Zhang Huan] *Lisheng San*: Treats newborn trismus and inability to suckle caused by the mother consuming excessive hot-natured medicines or roasted/fried hot foods during pregnancy, leading to sores on the tongue and mouth the size of millet grains and excessive crying in the infant.
*Ganzhizhu* (Dry Spider, Dried Spider) (one piece, remove mouth and legs, roast over new bamboo fire until oil extracts into a shell-sized amount, soak overnight, roast until charred, grind to powder), *Ganxieshao* (Dry Scorpion Tip, Dried Scorpio Tip) (seven pieces, ground to powder), *Nifen* (Calomel, Hydrargyri Chloridum) (ground, one qian).
Grind all ingredients together into an ultra-fine powder. Administer one zi dose each time, mixed with breast milk, dripping into the mouth frequently.
The *Qianjin Fang* treats trismus: Red indicates Heart Trismus (*Xin Jin*), White indicates Lung Trismus (*Fei Jin*).
*Jifenbai* (Chicken Droppings White, White part of chicken feces) (date-sized), wrap in cotton, boil in one he (approx. 20ml) of water for two boils, divide into two doses. (*Shenghui Fang* uses three bean-sized pieces, taken with water).
Another method: Four bird droppings, ground to powder, applied to the nipple for the infant to suck. For older infants, use ten pieces.
The *Waitai Mi Yao* treats *Zhuojin*, where the pathology is in the pharynx, resembling hemp or bean seeds, causing the infant to drool and refuse milk.
*Shuiyin* (Mercurius, Mercury) (millet-sized), administer orally; healing occurs upon swallowing. Dosage must be judged carefully, not exceeding a small sesame seed size. (For emergencies only).
The *Shiliao Bencao* (Food Therapy Materia Medica): Grind *Chamei* (Rubus Chamaemorus Fruit, likely referring to a specific Rubus species) into juice and pour into the mouth; it can revive even the dead. (*Chamei* refers to a plant with moist stems, three leaves at the tip, yellow flowers, and red fruits resembling raspberries).
The *Taiping Shenghui Fang*: One liang of *Chuanjiao* (Zanthoxyllum Bungeanum Fructus, Sichuan Pepper), wrapped in dough into a triangular shape similar to 'HT', baked until yellow and cooked. Cover the infant's mouth with cotton, pinch off the tip the size of a chopstick head, allowing the pepper aroma to enter the mouth. Effective; repeat if necessary.
*Wugong Fang* (Centipede Formula): Treats pediatric trismus where the mouth cannot open and suckling is impossible.
*Chijiaowugong* (Scolopendra Subspinipes mutilans, Red-legged Centipede) (half a strip, remove legs, roast until charred, grind to powder), *Shexiang* (Moschus, Musk) (a little).
Mix with porcine milk. Porcine milk is said to specifically treat pediatric trismus.
*Zhizhu Fang* (Spider Formula): Treats pediatric trismus where the mouth cannot open and suckling is impossible.
*Zhizhu* (Araneus, Spider) (one piece, remove legs and mouth, roast until charred, finely grind).
Mix with one he of porcine milk, divide into three doses, and slowly instill. The effect is miraculous. Adding *Shexiang* is excellent for treating *Yagan* (Gum Rot/Noma).
*Niu Xian Fang* (Ox Saliva Formula):
Collect saliva from an ox walking eastward, apply to the infant's mouth and forehead. Immediate effect.
*Treatment for Trismus and Convulsions via Nasal Insufflation*:
Use *Yujin* (Curcumae Radix, Turmeric Root), *Lilu* (Veratri Rhizoma, Veratrum Root), and *Gua Di* (Cucumeris Fructus, Melon Seed) ground to powder. Mix with water and insufflate into the nose.
Mr. Mao stated: Infants suffering from Wind Trismus within 120 days after birth (symptoms same as *Zhuojin*) result from maternal illness during conception, leading to toxin exposure. Post-birth, the blood and qi are unregulated, and wind pathogen strikes. Treatment: First administer *Duoming San* to vomit out wind-phlegm (see Acute/Chronic Convulsion section), then administer *Xingpi San* (see Stomach Qi Disharmony section or Slow Spleen Wind section) combined with *Jia Yunqi San* (see Stomach Qi Disharmony section), followed by *Xiongzhu San* (see Red/White Dysentery section) combined with *Zhusha Gao* (see Acute Convulsion section). Regular administration leads to recovery. If the hands are clenched and the mouth remains locked, it is a sign of death.
