Chao Yuanfang stated: The Heart manifests in the tongue and governs blood; the collateral vessels of the Spleen also emerge from under the tongue. The Heart and the Spleen are mother and child organs (the Heart is the mother, the Spleen is the child). When heat pathogens are present, both blood and Qi become hyperactive. The manifestation is a swelling attached to the underside of the tongue near the root, shaped like a tongue but shorter, named Chong She (Double Tongue). Methods for cutting it off with fingernails or reed knives can be found in the preceding section on "Mouth Wiping Method." The *Huiyan Jing* records that E Kou (Goose Mouth), Chong She (Double Tongue), Chong Yin (Double Gums), and Kou Chuang (Oral Ulcers) are all caused by Heat in the Upper Jiao, resulting from excessive heat exposure during fetal development. One should immediately apply powdered Ji Nei Jin (Chicken Gizzard Lining) dry into the mouth, as well as apply Zhu Sha Gao (Cinnabar Ointment) and Di Huang Gao (Rehmannia Ointment) alternately, while still administering Tian Zhu Huang San (Bambusae Caulis in Silicea Powder).
Di Huang Gao (Rehmannia Ointment)
Ingredients: Yu Jin (Curcumae Radix, boiled in soap pod water until dry, sliced, and roasted) 0.5 liang, Dou Fen (Bean Flour) 0.5 liang, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) 1 fen, Ma Ya Xiao (Natrii Sulfas Crystallizatus) 1 qian.
Preparation: Mix Sheng Di Huang Zhi (Fresh Juice of Rehmanniae Radix) and Feng Mi (Honey) in equal parts, boil down to an ointment consistency, then mix with the medicinal powders. Take an amount the size of a soap seed each time, dissolve in warm cooked water, or sweep into the mouth with a goose feather.
Jin Zhu Yin (Gold and Cinnabar Drink)
Indications: Treats fright-induced high fever, latent heat from Shang Han (Cold Damage), deficiency-heat in the Upper Jiao, and red eyes caused by Chong She (Double Tongue) and oral/nasal ulcers. (Originally named Tian Zhu Huang San).
Ingredients: Chuan Yu Jin (Curcumae Radix, crushed, boiled in soap pod water until dry; fine texture resembling gallbladder shape is preferred) 0.5 liang, Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusaе Caulis in Silicea) 0.5 liang, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, fried) 0.5 liang, Ma Ya Xiao (Natrii Sulfas Crystallizatus) 0.5 liang, Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, pulverized) 1 fen, Chan Ke (Periostracum Cicadae) 14 pieces (washed clean of soil), She Xiang (Moschus) a small amount.
Preparation: Pulverize all ingredients into a fine powder. Take 0.5 qian to 1 qian each time, mixed with honey water for administration.
The treatment method in *Qian Jin Fang* is summarized in the preceding chapter on "Drooping Carbuncles." After acupuncture to drain blood, wash and wipe with salt water, then apply Yi Zi San (One-Character Powder) by brushing, following the same method as the previous section.
Mr. Mao stated: For stagnation due to Heart Heat, first apply Zhu Sha Gao (Cinnabar Ointment; see Fright Accumulation Chapter) to the tongue, then apply Niu Huang Gao (Calculus Bovis Ointment; see Diaphragm Heat Chapter).
Sheng Hui Fang Niu Huang San (Calculus Bovis Powder)
(One variation lacks the first three ingredients and contains Xuan Ming Fen instead.)
Ingredients: Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis) 1 fen, Bai Long Nao (Borneolum Syntheticum) 1 fen, Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, pulverized) 1 fen, Qian Shuang (Plumbii Carbonas) 0.5 liang, Tai Yin Xuan Jing Shi (Selenitum) 1 liang.
Preparation: Finely grind all ingredients into a powder. First, puncture the swollen area with a needle or scalpel to release blood, wash and wipe the mouth with salt water, then sprinkle the powder. This yields miraculous effects.
