[Spontaneous and Night Sweating] Spontaneous sweating or night sweating after smallpox are all due to weak Wei Qi (Defensive Qi), heat in Ying Blood (Nutritive Blood), and deficiency of muscles. It is appropriate to take Baoyuan Tang (Preserve Yuan Decoction - General Method) and Danggui Liu Huang Tang (Angelica Six-Huang Decoction) alternately, along with Baipu San (Decayed Mugwort Powder). If sweating is severe, apply Wenfen (Warm Powder) externally (formula see under Spontaneous Sweating section). If the whole body is wet like being washed in water, skin moist like oil, and sweat beads form like pearls, these are all signs of Yang Collapse (Wang Yang), which are incurable and fatal.
[Blood Loss] Blood loss after smallpox is caused by residual toxic pathogenic heat forcing blood to move recklessly. Bleeding from the nose should be treated primarily with Xuanshen Dihuang Tang (Scrophulariae and Rehmanniae Decoction for Blood Loss); externally, use Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus) stir-fried until charred black, ground into powder, and insufflated into the nose. Bleeding from urine should be treated primarily with Bazheng San (Eight-Right Powder for Urinary Difficulty). Bleeding from stool should be treated primarily with Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel Order-the-Qi Decoction). This is similar to the above spontaneous sweating syndrome in that both are heat syndromes; the former has heat in the Wei level, hence sweating; this one has heat in the Ying level, hence bleeding. For both syndromes accompanied by constipation, treat primarily with Sishun Qingliang San (Four-Obeying Cooling-Clearing Powder for Fever).
Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang (Peach Kernel Order-the-Qi Decoction)

Cut the three main ingredients finely. Add one cup of water, decoct until reduced to seventy percent, remove dregs, add the Tao Ren paste, dissolve, and take before meals.
[Vomiting and Diarrhea with Roundworms] After smallpox, vomiting roundworms or passing roundworms in diarrhea are all due to heat toxin entering the interior. Heat in the stomach causes vomiting of roundworms; heat in the intestines causes passage of roundworms in stool. For diarrhea, use Huangqin Tang (Scutellaria Decoction for Diarrhea) plus Tao Ren and Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium); for vomiting, use Huangqin Banxia Tang (Scutellaria and Pinellia Decoction for Vomiting/Diarrhea) plus Wumei (Mume Fructus) and Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper). If there is no vomiting or diarrhea, but only vomiting roundworms upon smelling food, this is due to long-term stomach deficiency where worms have no food; thus, they vomit upon smelling food odor, and hunger arises easily after eating. Treat primarily with Lizhong Tang Wan (Regulate the Middle Pill) plus Wumei meat, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Chuanjiao.
Yuan Shi's song for treating worms in stool after smallpox: "Worms in stool indicate separation of Stomach Qi, [use] Renshen, Baizhu, and Chenpi, Poria, Gancao, and Danggui together; decoct and take continuously, and the worms will naturally be eliminated."
Lianrou Tang (Lotus Seed Decoction)
Lianrou (Nelumbinis Nuciferae Semen, remove heart, half jin)
Zhurou (Porcine Meat, remove fat and skin, one jin)
Boil together in water, add Sharen (Amomi Fructus Rotundus) and Fujiang (Fermented Soybean Paste), feed morning and evening. This nourishes Stomach Qi, and the worms will naturally remain settled and not emerge. Do not administer drugs such as Shijunzi (Quisqualis Fructus) or Benglang (Arecae Semen); once administered during smallpox, life will be lost.
[Hu Huo Syndrome] After smallpox, vomiting roundworms with cold hands and feet is called Hui Jue (Roundworm Cold Reversal). If there is no vomiting or diarrhea but internal erosion of zang-fu organs occurs, it is called Hu Huo (Fox-Spirit Syndrome). The Hu Huo syndrome presents with the patient preferring sleep, silence, and lack of appetite; sores on the upper lip with worms eroding the anus; sores on the lower lip with worms eroding the viscera; hoarse voice; and shifting lesions up and down, hence named Hu Huo. This condition is most malignant, especially common after measles. Treat primarily with Huachong Wan (Expel-Worm Pill). If stool is constipated, use Tao Ren Cheng Qi Tang plus Huaizi (Sophorae Tonkinensis Fructus) to promote bowel movement.

Grind into powder. Wash Wumei, remove pits, pound into paste, mix with powder to make pills. Take with Rice Drink.
[Ya Gan (Gum Gangrene)] After smallpox, ulceration and rotting of teeth and gums occur because after the smallpox scabs fall off, saliva immersion causes Gan erosion sores. Apply Mianjian San (Silkworm Cocoon Powder) (see under Scabbing section). If there is foul breath and bleeding, it is also called Zouma Gan Chuang (Running Horse Gan Sore). Internally, use Huanglian Jiedu Tang (Coptis Detoxification Decoction for Irritability) plus Xionghuang (Realgar) made into pills, taken with Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) decoction. Externally, apply Mamingsan (Horse Cry Powder). For mouth and tongue sores, use Xixin San (Wash Heart Powder). For all the above syndromes with constipation, use Sishun Yin (Four-Obeying Drink) to promote bowel movement; for normal/moist bowels, use Ganlu Yin (Sweet Dew Drink). Wash with decoction of old tea leaves and Xiye Gen (Allii Macrostemonis Radix). Burn Bai Mei (White Plum) to ash, calcine Renzhongbai (Urine Sediment), add Xionghuang Powder, and apply.

Generally, after sores and smallpox, if constipation and internal heat syndromes occur, one must resolve and purge them to prevent residual toxins from generating other syndromes. Resolving agents include Sanhuang Wan (Three-Yellow Pill), Sishun Yin (Four-Obeying Drink) (see under Fever). If neglecting resolution leads to various syndromes, one must urgently treat with medicines targeting the root cause, not delay treatment, allowing the disease to spread and harm the patient. Nowadays, people fail to investigate the cause of illness and indiscriminately use non-urgent medicines, merely intending to avoid error, never truly investigating the cause of disease to medicate accordingly. In urgent treatment, the key is to distinguish deficiency and excess. If constitution is solid, Ying and Wei are robust, and heat exists post-illness, immediate resolution is required; delay is inadvisable. If constitution is weak, Ying and Wei are greatly deficient post-illness, with trembling when sitting/standing and poor appetite, gentle and moderating medicines should be used to support the body. Wait until appetite returns and Ying/Wei are replenished, then gently resolve; this is not too late. For extremely deficient persons, resolution may not be necessary.
