Yang Shi stated: Gan gan (Liver malnutrition) is caused by irregular breastfeeding and diet, leading to heat in the Liver. If the nursing mother fails to regulate warmth and cold properly, does not control her diet, or suffers from external contraction of wind-cold and internal injury from anger and joy, and if the pathogenic factor has not yet dissipated but breastfeeding is resumed immediately, it often results in Feng gan (Wind malnutrition). The Liver manifests in the eyes. With latent heat above the diaphragm and congestion of phlegm-fluids, Liver wind enters the eyes, causing redness, swelling, formation of nebulae (corneal opacity), excessive discharge and tearing, ulceration of the eye sockets, pain and itching leading to rubbing and wiping, dim vision, nyctalopia (night blindness), and even keeping the eyes closed for months; this is also called Gan eye. External signs include shaking the head and rubbing the eyes, white membrane covering the pupils, bluish eyes with excessive tears, scorched and erect hair, visible blue veins and hot brain, itchy nails and tendon spasms, dry thirst, excessive sweating, dysentery, sores, and tinea. Qian Yi advocated treating this with Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) targeting the Kidney.
