Qian Yi stated: Infants with robust prenatal constitution (Tai Shi) have ruddy complexions, dark and bright eyes with prominent iris coverage, and tend to smile. Infants with deficient prenatal constitution (Tai Qie) have sallow complexions, less visible irises with more sclera exposed, and tend to cry frequently. One must also distinguish the parents' body types; a father who is obese cannot sire a thin child, nor can a thin father sire an obese child.
"Tai Fei" (Fetal Excess/Fatness) refers to infants born with thick muscles and reddish skin tone. After one month of age, they gradually become emaciated, exhibit pinkish-white sclera, sensation of heat in the five centers (palms, soles, and chest), difficulty in defecation, and frequent drooling. The primary treatment is the Body Bathing Method.
Ingredients: Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, 2 qian), Xiewei (Scorpio tail, detoxified), Zhusha (Cinnabar, each 5 fen), Wushe Rou (Duberrius's Snake meat, soaked in wine, dried and powdered), Baifan (Alumen, each 3 qian), Shexiang (Musk, 1 zi), Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis, 3 qian).
Grind all ingredients uniformly. For each use, take 3 qian of the powder, add three bowls of water, a handful of peach branches with five or seven leaves, and decoct until boiling ten times. Use the warm liquid for bathing. Do not bathe the back.
Dalianqiao Yin (Great Forsythia Decoction): Treats fetal heat causing umbilical wind (neonatal tetanus), urinary retention, and various sores and toxins.
Ingredients: Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructum), Qumai (Dianthi Herba), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix), Huashi (Talcum), Chanqiao (Cicadae Periostracum), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, stir-fried, each 1 qian), Shanzhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, each half qian).
Grind into fine powder. Take 2 qian per dose, add Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi Radix), and decoct with water. If heat is severe, add Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma); adjust further based on specific symptoms.
Xue Ji stated: Tai Fei is caused by maternal stomach heat. The infant should undergo the Body Bathing Method to unblock the couli (skin pores and interstices). The nursing mother should take Dalianqiao Yin.
"Tai Qie" (Fetal Deficiency/Weakness) refers to infants born with lusterless faces, thin muscles, watery loose stools, lack of blood color in the body, frequent hiccupping and belching, dull eyes, and lack of spirit. This condition is also primarily treated with the Body Bathing Method. Chu Yushi stated: Insufficient qi and blood in the mother leads to emaciation and thin flesh in the infant; insufficient essence from the father leads to delayed closure of the fontanelle (Jie Lu) and excessive sclera exposure.
When a newborn has yellowing of the entire body and face, resembling gold, accompanied by high fever, constipation, urine resembling gardenia juice, refusal to nurse, and incessant crying, this is the presentation of Tai Huang (Fetal Jaundice). This is caused by damp-heat contracted by the nursing mother being transmitted to the fetus. In such cases, both mother and infant should take Dihuang Tang and Dihuang Yinzi. If an infant remains slightly yellow after one hundred days or six months without prior illness, it is due to stomach heat. If jaundice is present from birth, it is termed Tan Dan (Fetal Jaundice). The classics state: All forms of jaundice are heat-related; deep yellow color confirms this. The primary treatment is Xijiao San. If the yellow is pale and mixed with white, it indicates weak stomach qi, treated with Baizhu San.
Shengdi Huang Tang (Rehmanniae Radix Decoction): Treats fetal jaundice in newborns.
Ingredients: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Gualou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix, equal parts).
Cut into pieces. Take half liang per dose, decoct with water. The nursing mother takes it, and occasionally applies a small amount to the infant's mouth.
Dihuang Tang (Rehmannia Decoction)
Ingredients: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), Tian Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), Chi Fu Ling (Poria cum Ligno Rubrum, peeled), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, removed root tips), Zhuling (Polyporus), Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba, equal parts).
Crush into coarse powder. Decoct with water and take before meals.
Dihuang Yinzi (Rehmannia Mixture): Treats newborns with full-body and facial jaundice resembling gold, or red face with fever, closed eyes that do not open, constipation, urine like gardenia juice, and widespread sores.
Ingredients: Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, each 2 qian), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, removed root tips), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, removed root tips), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 qian).
Grind into extremely fine powder. Decoct with Dengxin Cao (Junci Medullia) as soup and take before meals. The nursing mother should take it and avoid alcohol, wheat products, and the "five pungent spices."
Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder): Treats fetal jaundice with full-body yellowing.
Ingredients: Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu), Yinchen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba), Gualou Gen (Trichosanthis Radix), Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, roasted), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Longdan Cao (Gentianae Radix), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), Hanshui Shi (Halloysit Rubrum, calcined, equal parts).
Cut into pieces. Decoct with water and take at any time.
