Tian stated: When a newborn presents with redness of the skin, where the body resembles being coated with cinnabar, first administer Niuhuang San (Cow Bezoar Powder) internally to support the interior and expel toxins, followed by applying Lanye San (Isatis Leaf Powder) externally. The nursing mother should take Qingliang Yinzi (Cooling Decoction) for three doses. (Note: Niuhuang San may refer to Niuhuang Duoming San [Cow Bezoar Life-Snatching Powder], see the Asthma section; Qingliang Yin, see the Abdominal Pain section.) Zhang Huan stated: When an infant is just born, the eyes must be washed clean. If not washed thoroughly, foul fluids will soak and erode the eyes, causing the eyelids to become red and ulcerated, which may persist into adulthood without healing. This condition is named Tai Chi (Fetal Redness), and Erjin San (Two Golds Powder) is appropriate. [Zeng] A child of pure yang, within a month of birth, suddenly has both eyes red, with canthi becoming ulcerated, dry, itchy, and developing nebulae. This occurs because, in utero, the mother contracted wind-heat, which transmitted to the Heart and Liver meridians. First, use Baijie San (Hundred Resolutions Powder) added with Danggui San (Angelica Sinensis Powder), fresh ginger, and Jiedixin (Cyperus Club), decocted and administered orally. Subsequently, use Daochi San (Guide Out Redness Powder) and Niubang Tang (Arctium Decoction) added with Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), Muzei (Equisetum Ramulus), and Chanqiao (Cicada Slough), decocted with water, which yields effective results. Some cases arise from difficult labor causing stagnant fetal qi, with slow turning movements, leading to blood pressure compressing the infant's head, resulting in splashed blood渗着 downwards. Severe cases involve blood pouring into the eyes, obscuring the pupil; mild cases present with swelling and redness of the outer eye bag and ulceration of the upper and lower canthi. If cooling medicines are administered, it will inevitably chill the Zang-Fu organs; thus, Shengdihuang Tang (Rehmannia Root Decoction) is indicated as the primary treatment.

Erjin San Formula
Huanglian (remove roots) Huangbo (Phellodendron Bark, each 1 qian)
Grind the above into coarse powder. Soak in breast milk overnight, then bake dry. Use a small amount each time, wrap in new cotton, soak in Jingjie Tang (Schizonepeta Decoction), warm it, and wash frequently.
Zhenjin San Treats infants born with redness due to improper washing of the eyes, where foul fluids soak and erode the eyes, causing eyelid redness and ulceration that persists into adulthood. This is caused by the mother consuming hot foods and hot medicines, named Tai Chi (Fetal Redness).
Huanglian (remove roots) Huangbo Danggui Chishao (Red Peony Root) (each 1 qian) Xingren (Apricot Seed, remove skin and tip, 0.5 qian)
Chop into pieces, soak in breast milk overnight, sun-dry, and grind into an extremely fine powder. Mix with Shengdihuang Zhi (Fresh Rehmannia Juice) to measure "yi zi" (a small unit of volume), apply frequently to the eyes. Wrap in new cotton, soak in warm Jingjie Tang, and wash frequently. The mother should take Xixin San.
