[Chao Yuanfang] From the period of bianzheng (periodic physiological changes in infants) to the ability to speak, as days pass, the blood vessels, bone joints become complete, and the patella forms, enabling walking. Bones are nourished by marrow; if the innate Qi and Blood are insufficient, the marrow will not be full and strong, thus bones fail to develop properly, resulting in an inability to walk even after several years.
[Zhang Shi] For infants, upon reaching one year of age (360 days), the knee bones form, enabling them to walk. In recent times, many children suffer from weak fetal Qi due to their parents' deficiency of Qi and Blood, leading to weak bone Qi, softness of bones, and powerless sinews and vessels, preventing them from walking. She Xiang Rong Dan (Musk and Deer Antler Pill) is indicated for this condition and has proven highly effective.
[Tang Shi] When children have insufficient innate Qi and Blood, the marrow is not full, causing bones to be soft and unable to support walking. The Kidney governs the marrow; therefore, treatment should employ Qian Yi's Bu Shen Di Huang Wan (Kidney-Nourishing Rehmannia Pill) supplemented with Lu Rong (Deer Antler), Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), and She Xiang (Musk). This promotes marrow generation and strengthens bones, naturally restoring the ability to walk. My nephew Huang Zhilu’s son could not walk at three years old; upon administering this formula, there was a verified effect.
[Zhang Shi] She Xiang Rong Dan (Musk and Deer Antler Pill): Treats inability to walk after several years.
She Xiang (Musk, separately ground), Qie Rong (Deer Antler, fried with butter until yellow), Sheng Gan Di Huang (Dried Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Hu Jing Gu (Tigri Tarsi, coated with butter and fried until yellow), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, washed and dried), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, sliced).
Each ingredient above is taken in equal amounts (one liang), ground into fine powder. Mix with four liang of sheep marrow boiled until soft to form a paste, shaped into pills the size of millet seeds. Take ten pills per dose, administered with Mo Chen Xiang Tang (Agarwood Decoction), before milk or food intake, three times daily.
[Qian Yi] Ling Yang Jiao Wan (Antelope Horn Pill): Treats pediatric Kidney deficiency or post-illness weakness of sinews and bones, where children aged five or six cannot walk. It is suitable for tonifying the Liver and Kidney.
Ling Yang Jiao (Antelopi Cornu, use tips that are fine and dense, grind into powder), Hu Jing Gu (Tigri Tarsi, cracked, coated with butter and fried until yellow), Sheng Gan Di Huang (Dried Raw Rehmanniae Radix, dried), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, skin and kernel removed, stir-fried), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, half liang each), Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, bark removed, take aromatic parts, avoid direct fire), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove radicle tip, slice, dry), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, same processing as above), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, slice and dry, two qian half each).
Grind all together into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills. Take a dose the size of a soap pod; increase for older children. Administer before meals, dissolved in warm water, three to four times daily. Long-term use yields results.
*Taiping Shenghui Fang* Sheng Gan Di Huang Wan (Dried Raw Rehmannia Pill): Treats children who cannot walk up to ten years of age.
Sheng Di Huang (Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, dried), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, lightly stir-fried), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Ling Yang Jiao (Antelopi Cornu), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, roasted until slightly red), Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex, equal parts).
Pulverize and sieve, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. Take ten pills before meals with warm wine, adjusting dosage according to the child's condition.
Hu Gu San (Tiger Bone Powder):
Hu Jing Gu (Tigri Tarsi, wine-fried), Sheng Gan Di Huang (Dried Raw Rehmanniae Radix), Suan Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen, soaked in wine, skin removed, fried until fragrant), La Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex, bark removed), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, skin removed), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove radicle fork), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, remove radicle), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix, soaked in wine, remove radicle, equal parts).
Grind into extremely fine powder. Take 1.5 qian per dose, mixed with porridge drink, add two drops of good wine, mix well, take before meals, twice daily.
Alternative method: Form pills with refined honey, size of millet seeds, administer with Mu Gua Tang (Papaya Decoction).
*Sanyin Fang* Wu Jia Pi San (Acanthopanacis Cortex Powder): Treats children aged three who cannot walk, caused by insufficient reception of Qi, physical weakness, and softness of sinews and bones in the waist, spine, legs, and knees. Use genuine Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) ground into powder, mixed with porridge drink and a small amount of good wine. Take an amount equivalent to a walnut shell per dose, three times daily. Effective.
Alternative: Wu Jia Pi (Acanthopanacis Cortex) 2.5 qian, Mu Gua (Chaenomelis Fructus) 1.25 qian, ground into extremely fine powder. Mix with porridge drink and two drops of wine, administer.
*You You Xin Shu* records: Pediatric bone heat with Lung pulse cold leads to long-term inability to walk. *Lun Xin Jing* records: Infants injured by improper holding since birth have slender, weak legs and cannot stand or walk, or suffer from bone heat, Guan syndrome (malnutrition), and emaciation. Chai Hu Yin (Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, coated with rice vinegar and fried until yellow), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, pulp removed, bran-fried), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Sheng Ma ( Cimicifugae Rhizoma, equal parts).
Cut finely. For children under three years, use half a liang of herbs, boil in five he of water until reduced to two he. Divide into two doses, taken on an empty stomach before meals.
Avoid toxic foods after administration. Bathe after taking the medicine.
Bathing Formula:
Ku Shen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix), Fu Ling Pi (Poria Peridium), Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Sang Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), Bai Fan (Alumen, half liang each), Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus, small amount).
Cut coarsely, steep one liang of herbs in two sheng of boiling water overnight. Bathe the child in the solution, keeping warm and avoiding wind.
*Qian Jin Fang* Prescription for inability to walk after several years:
Feed the infant stolen food from a funeral house before the door is opened, three times a day, and they will begin to walk. (Yi Yun notes: Before closing the door, feed the infant at the tomb gate.)
*You You Xin Shu* Moxibustion: Three moxa cones on each ankle.
Liang Fang Zuo Jing Wan (Left Meridian Pill): Treats various sinew and bone diseases, hemiplegia, and inability to walk or move.
Cao Wu Tou (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, raw, white flesh, remove skin and umbilicus), Mu Bie Zi (Momordicae Semen, remove shell), Bai Jiao Xiang (Elemi Resina), Wu Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces, three liang half each), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, one liang), Ban Mao (Mylabris, remove wings and feet, 100 pieces, cooked with little vinegar).
Grind into powder, mix with one jin of black bean powder (raw, pounded), use vinegar paste to form pills the size of corn kernels. Dissolve one pill in wine and take. For those without meridian injury from acupuncture/moxibustion, four to five pills are definitely effective. For a ten-year-old, divide one pill into three doses. This medicine unites Ying and Wei, guides meridians, and specifically treats the Heart, Kidney, and Liver meridians. A decrease in urination and dysuria after administration indicates efficacy.
Note: This formula is not suitable unless there is internal stagnant blood or chronic accumulation.
