Ji Jing (Acute Convulsion) should be treated with cooling purgation, while Man Jing (Chronic Convulsion) should be treated with warming tonification; this is a fixed principle. However, there are cases where Ji Jing does not heal after cooling purgation and transforms into Man Jing, or cases where Man Jing does not heal after warming tonification and transforms into Ji Jing. In such situations, it is appropriate to use medicines that treat both Ji Jing and Man Jing universally.
[Decoction] Du Ming San (Life-Rescuing Powder): This medicine can greatly control wind-phlegm. Whether it is Ji Jing or Man Jing, as long as there is phlegm-fluid surging and obstructing the throat, causing a roaring sound in the throat known as "Chao Xian" (Tidal Phlegm), preventing any medicine from being swallowed, with life hanging in the balance, one should first use this medicine. Once it enters the throat, the phlegm immediately descends. Its efficacy is perfect, akin to seizing the creation of heaven and earth.
Formula: Qing Meng Shi (Lapis Aurichalci, 1 liang, placed in a Gan Wo Zi [clay pot], calcined with Yan Xiao (Saltpeter, 1 liang) over charcoal fire until red hot, must continue until the Saltpeter is completely consumed. After cooling, when the color resembles gold, it is ready for use).
Preparation: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder.
Usage: For Ji Jing, where phlegm obstructs the upper body and the body heat is like fire, mix the natural juice of fresh Bo He (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) with honey, and take it warm. After a long time, the medicine will wrap around the phlegm and cause it to descend, exiting through the large intestine, resembling thick sticky mucus. This is the effect of the medicine. Subsequently, administer medicines for clearing heat, dispelling wind, and arresting convulsions. For Man Jing, it is also due to phlegm-fluid surging upward and blocking the throat, making it difficult to ingest medicine or food. When doctors are at their wit's end and the situation is desperate, waiting for death, simply use this medicine combined with Qing Zhou Bai Wan (Qingzhou White Pills) re-ground into powder, decocted into a thin paste, and taken with cooked honey. The phlegm will immediately descend into the abdomen. Subsequently, administer medicines such as Hua She (Bungarus multicinctus), Chuan Wu (Aconiti Radix), Quan Xie (Scorpio), and Wu Gong (Scolopendra).
Da Hei Long Wan (Great Black Dragon Pill): Treats pediatric Ji Jing and Man Jing with miraculous efficacy. (Formula see entry for Ji Jing.)

Preparation: Grind all ingredients into powder, bind with Gan Cao paste into pills the size of a chicken head.
Usage: For Man Jing, swallow with Shen Zhu Tang (Ginseng and Atractylodes Decoction); for Ji Jing, swallow with Bo He Jiang Mi Tang (Mint, Ginger, and Honey Decoction).

Bao Long Wan (Embracing Dragon Pill): Treats wind-cold epidemic, fever, drowsiness, coarse breathing, cough due to wind-heat and phlegm-stagnation, convulsive tremors, and can also be taken after gu-toxin exposure, heatstroke, or bathing. It is suitable for frequent administration in robust children. (Danxi stated that Bao Long Wan treats the Heart, Lung, and Liver.)
Ingredients: Nan Xing (If cow bile-treated is unavailable, use raw Nan Xing chopped and stir-fried until cooked, 4 liang); Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam, 1 liang); Xiong Huang (Realgar, water-floating method); Chen Sha (Cinnabaris, ground separately, each half liang); She Xiang (Moschus, ground separately, 1 qian).
Preparation: Grind into fine powder, boil Gan Cao paste, and form pills the size of soap beans. Dissolve in warm water before swallowing. For infants under 100 days, divide one pill into 3-4 doses; for 5-year-olds, 1-2 pills; for adults, 3-5 pills. Also treats leukorrhea in young women. For latent summerheat, chew 1-2 pills with a little salt, washed down with fresh cool water. Using snow water from the twelfth lunar month to boil Gan Cao for mixing is especially good. Another method: Soak Nan Xing in grain vinegar or new water for three days until permeated, boil until soft, boil 3-5 times, remove while soft, peel off skin, slice the white soft part thinly, dry by baking, stir-fry to yellow, and grind to powder (8 liang). Take Gan Cao (2 liang 5 fen), crush, soak in 2 bowls of water overnight, boil slowly over low fire until half a bowl remains, strain, and gradually pour into the Nan Xing powder, grinding slowly until the Gan Cao water is absorbed, then add remaining herbs.
Hu Po Bao Long Wan (Amber Embracing Dragon Pill, by Zeng Shi)
Meaning of "Embracing Dragon": "Bao" means protect; "Long" refers to the Liver. The Liver corresponds to the Azure Dragon of the East (Wood). Wood generates Fire. What generates me is my parent; thus, Liver is the mother, Heart is the son. If the mother is peaceful, the son is peaceful. The Heart stores the Spirit (Shen), and the Liver stores the Soul (Hun). Once the Hun and Shen are settled, from where would convulsions arise? Hence, it is called Bao Long Wan. It regulates various pediatric convulsions, wind-cold infections in four seasons, epidemic pathogenic heat causing restlessness, phlegm-cough and rapid breathing, and convulsions during the eruption phase of sores/rashes. It is suitable for all these conditions. Its nature is warm and neutral, neither excessive nor drying. Regular use dispels wind and resolves phlegm, calms the heart and clears heat, harmonizes the spleen and stomach, and benefits spirit.
Ingredients: Zhen Hu Po (True Amber), Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam), Tan Xiang (Santalum Album Lignum, finely chopped), Ren Shen (Panacis Ginseng Radix, remove rhizome), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, remove bark, each 1 liang 5 fen); Fen Cao (Licorice Root, 3 liang, remove nodes); Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, soaked in water, remove pith, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow); Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, soaked in water, remove pith, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow, each 1 liang); Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, 5 liang, first attract iron filings with lodestone, then grind finely in a mortar with water, collect the floating part, refine by washing in a clean vessel until clear, discard supernatant, repeat until processed, dry for use); Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, remove black skin, 1 jin, chop into small blocks, stir-fry slowly until thoroughly hot, cool for use); Nan Xing (Arisaema Cum Bile, 1 liang, chop, ferment in male yellow ox bile from the twelfth lunar month, pass through one summer); Jin Bo (Gold Leaf, 100 sheets, remove protective paper, take 1 liang of the finished product, grind extremely fine together with previous powders in a mortar, mix evenly).
Preparation: Of the twelve ingredients, except Zhu Sha and Jin Bo which are not ground in the mill, the other ten ingredients: Tan Xiang is not roasted, the other nine are either sun-dried or baked. Grind them together into fine powder and mix evenly. For every 1 liang of Zhu Sha and Jin Bo, take 1 liang of fresh well water, put in a mortar, beat slightly until uniform, then shape into pills the size of chicken eggs. Dry in shade; if sunny, expose slightly. If the sun is too strong, they may crack, so place in a ventilated area to dry naturally.
Usage: Dissolve in Scallion Decoction at any time, or Mint Decoction. For severe phlegm obstruction and cough, take with Light Ginger Decoction. For measles/rash with convulsions, take with Warm Clean Decoction. For palpitations and unrest, take with Jiedcao (Scutellaria Barbata Herb) Decoction. For summer heat闷迷 (stifling confusion), take with Ophiopogon Decoction. Infants within 100 days: divide one pill into three doses. Children over two years: one or two pills only. During preparation, if even one ingredient is missing or not processed according to regulations, it will be ineffective. Store commonly in a clay jar with She Xiang to prevent scent leakage. Adding 1 liang of Zhen Zhu Mo (Pearl Powder) creates Jin Zhu San (Gold Pearl Powder), because Pearl Powder calms the heart, soothes the liver, and is particularly effective in resolving phlegm. Usage is the same as above.
Another Hu Po Bao Long Wan: Specifically treats pediatric Ji/Man Jing fever, cough leading to convulsions, phlegm-wheezing, palpitations. Take with Ginger-Mint Decoction. For epidemic rash fever, vomiting, jumping fright, take with plain water. For wind-cold fever, cough, nasal chill, crying from fright, take with Scallion Decoction. For fever due to fright, restless sleep, take with Centipede Grass (Deng Xin Cao) Decoction. For summer fever and vomiting, take with Ophiopogon Decoction. For fever transmitted from mother via milk causing heat and unrest, take with Licorice Decoction. For spleen-stomach disharmony, head heat, sallow emaciation, poor appetite, take with Amomum Decoction. One-year-old children take one pill; younger ones take half. Continuous administration of 1-2 pills yields no failure. Avoid fishy/raw/cold foods. For breastfed infants, the nursing mother must also observe these dietary restrictions.
Ingredients: Hu Po (Amber, 2 qian 5 fen, wrapped in lean pork and baked, then ground to obtain 2 qian); Niu Dan Nan Xing (Arisaema with Cow Bile, 1 liang 6 qian, best made with cow bile in the twelfth lunar month); Jiang Can (Bombyx Batryticatus, 2 qian, stir-fried); Xiong Huang (Realgar); Chen Sha (Cinnabaris); Ren Shen (Panacis Ginseng Radix); Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (each 3 qian); Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam, 5 qian); Gou Teng (Uncariae Ramulus cum Uncis, use full hooks, 1 liang 5 qian); Zhen Zheng Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, 5 fen); Zhen She Xiang (Moschus, 1 qian).
Preparation: Do not miss any amount. Grind to extremely fine powder. Take 8 liang of Fen Gan Cao (Licorice Root), chop, decoct in 4 large bowls of water to yield 2 bowls of paste. Add herb powder to form pills. Each pill weighs 5 fen. Coat with Gold Leaf, wrap externally with Yellow Wax. One batch yields 200 pills.
Another Hu Po Bao Long Wan: Treatment indications as above.
Ingredients: Hu Po (Amber, 1 liang 5 qian, ground); Niu Huang (Calculus Bovis, 1 qian, ground); Ren Shen (Panacis Ginseng Radix); Tan Xiang (Santalum Album Lignum); Bai Fu Ling (Poria) (each 1 liang 5 qian); Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris, ground); Zhen Zhu (Margarita, each 5 qian, ground); Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus); Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus); Niu Dan Nan Xing (Arisaema with Cow Bile); Tian Zhu Huang (Bambusae Caulis in Taeniam) (each 1 liang); Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, 10 liang); Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 3 liang, all ground to fine powder); Jin Bo (Gold Leaf, 400 sheets); Feng Mi (Mel, 2 jin); Huang La (Yellow Beeswax, 25 jin).
This medicine, one batch yields 500 pills, each weighing 5 fen. Specifically treats various pediatric convulsions, seasonal wind-cold, epidemic pathogenic heat, restlessness, phlegm-cough, rapid breathing, and convulsions during rash eruption. Its nature is warm and neutral, neither cold nor drying. It dispels wind, resolves phlegm, calms the heart, clears heat, settles the soul, arrests convulsions, harmonizes spleen/stomach, and boosts spirit. Take with Scallion White Decoction or Mint Decoction. For severe phlegm obstruction and cough, take with Ginger Decoction. For rash with convulsions, take with plain water. The above formulas universally treat Ji/Man Jing, because deficiency and excess often appear together, and Ji/Man Jing transform into each other, hence the universal treatment method. Generally speaking, although Ji and Man Jing differ, they all originate from Phlegm. Therefore, Qing Meng Shi (Lapis Aurichalci), Nan Xing (Arisaema), and Ban Xia (Pinellia) can generally treat it. Specifically, Qing Meng Shi drains phlegm; Qing Dai (Indigo Naturalis) drains Wood (Liver); Zhu Sha (Cinnabar) drains Fire. These are agents for treating Qi Excess. Ren Shen (Ginseng) and Gan Cao (Licorice) tonify Earth (Spleen); Tian Ma (Gastrodia) and Quan Xie (Scorpion) tonify Wood (Liver); Wu Tou (Aconite) and Fu Zi (Aconite) tonify Fire (Kidney/Mingmen). These are agents for treating Qi Deficiency. Thus, tonification and purgation are applied simultaneously, representing a method of universal treatment for both deficiency and excess.
