Infantile Qi pain of the Small Intestine and Bladder is located on both sides of Qihai (CV6) below the umbilicus. The tendons swell to the edge of the scrotum. The pain is unbearable to touch. Treatment uses Chuanlianzi (Fructus Toosendan), Juhe (Semen Citri Reticulatae Viride), Xiaohuixiang (Fructus Foeniculi), and Lizhihe (Semen Litchi). All are stir-baked, ground into powder, and taken with hot white wine, 3-4 qian per dose. It heals in a few doses.
The child has no serious illness but suddenly laughs heartily when seeing people, and does so even when not seeing anyone. This happens daily. Treatment uses Jiegeng (Radix Platycodonis) 3 qian, Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae) 5 qian, Mutong (Caulis Akebiae or Caulis Tetraspermae) 1 qian, and Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) 5 qian. Decoct and take orally. Subsequently, moxibustion of two cones is applied to Baihui (GV20) at the vertex of the head. It heals immediately.
There are two causes for infant insomnia: one is Heart deficiency, the other is Gallbladder deficiency. If the infant sleeps soundly without hearing voices, wakes up suddenly, and cannot fall back asleep, this is due to insufficient Heart blood. Ren Shen An Shen Wan (Ginseng Calming Spirit Pill) is appropriate. If the infant startles and cannot sleep upon hearing slight noises, this indicates extreme Gallbladder deficiency. Canzhu Tang (Ginseng and Bamboo Leaf Decoction) is appropriate.
Excessive sleepiness is caused by Spleen Qi deficiency, where the transformative and transporting function fails, leading to drowsiness. Treatment should warm and tonify the Spleen and Stomach using Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) and Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), with doubled Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae).
Contracting Wind-Heat leads to凝注 (coagulation and stagnation) forming Phlegm, which stops in the Heart and Chest, causing coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath. Lung Qi becomes distended and attacks the chest and diaphragm, gradually forming Tortoise Chest (pectus carinatum). Alternatively, if the nursing mother consumes excessive spicy food or feeds hot milk in summer, this condition may also arise. Treatment is appropriate with Kuanqi Huatan Wan (Qi-Widening and Phlegm-Resolving Pill).
External Wind invading the back transmits into the Marrow, causing the back to protrude like a tortoise shell. Or, prolonged coughing leads to Lung deficiency, resulting in Kidney deficiency as the Kidney generates from the Lung. Since the Kidney governs bones, Wind-Cold enters the sinews and bones through deficiency, preventing the smooth flow of Essence and Blood, causing the spine to curve into hunchback. Treatment is appropriate with Songrui Dan (Pine Pollen Pill). Externally, apply Turtle Urine to the midline of the spinal process until healed.
When a newborn's cranial sutures do not close, it is because the Kidney governs bones and the Brain is the Sea of Marrow; Kidney deficiency causes failure to close. This is named Xielu (Splitting Skull / Delayed Fontanelle Closure). Treatment is appropriate with Liuwei Dihuang Wan (Six-Ingredient Pill with Rehmannia). Protrusion of the fontanelle is named Xitian (Fontanelle Bulging). Dalianqiao Yin (Large Forsythia Decoction) or Xieqing Tang (Draining Green Decoction) is appropriate. Depression of the fontanelle like a pit is due to long-standing disease causing Qi and Blood deficiency, failing to ascend and nourish. Treatment is appropriate with Guzhen Tang (Solidify True Decoction). Additionally, roast Dog Bone, grind into powder, mix with Egg White, and apply topically.
