The mucous membrane of the hard palate swells and protrudes, resembling a sac filled with water; this condition is named *Chong E* (Repetitive Palate). The gums swell and protrude, named *Chong Yin* (Repetitive Gums). Both conditions are treated by puncturing with a large needle to drain blood, followed by applying *Puhuang* (Cattail Pollen) powder.
Swelling occurs inside and outside the ear, or pus discharges from the ear. Pus may discharge every other day or every two days. Treatment is suitable using *Huangshan* (Eel): cut it with a knife and drip its blood into the ear several times. Alternatively, use *Tianbao Caiwei Tang* (Tianbao Caiwei Decoction).
*Chong She* (Repetitive Tongue) refers to a small tongue-like growth emerging from the root of the tongue. *Mu She* (Wooden Tongue) refers to the tongue swelling and becoming stiff, filling the mouth. Both result from extreme heat in the Heart and Spleen. Treatment uses equal parts of *Huanglian* (Coptis Rhizome), *Zaoxintu* (Furnace Hearth Earth), *Mutong* (Akebia Caulis), and *Lianqiao* (Forsythia Fruit) decocted, taken with water prepared from grinding *Xijiao* (Rhinoceros Horn). Additionally, apply *Puxiao* (Natrii Sulfas), *Zixue* (Purple Snow), and *Baiyan* (White Salt), each 0.5 fen, mixed with *Zhuli* (Bamboo Sap) for external application; recovery will follow.
In the Bingwu year, during the imperial examinations, I was in Nanjing with my cousin Xia Duo and second cousin once removed Xia Mo. My nephew suddenly suffered from *Chong She*. His brother took him to a surgeon, who pierced it with a knife, draining fluid resembling egg white. Upon returning to our lodging, it swelled again. This repeated twice without healing. I adhered to the theory that "the tongue is the sprout of the Heart" and formulated a prescription using *Huanglian*, *Huangqin* (Scutellaria Root), *Mutong*, *Zhiqiao* (Aurantii Fructus), and *Gancao* (Licorice Root). After two doses, the tongue swelling reduced by half. However, phlegm suddenly obstructed the throat. I deduced this was due to the misuse of *Huangqin*. Since Heart Fire insults Lung Metal, the Lung was already unstable; mistakenly purging the Lung would inevitably cause phlegm obstruction. Thus, I removed *Huangqin* and added 2 qian of *Wuweizi* (Schisandra Berry). After one dose, the illness resolved completely. This demonstrates the principle of treating the Zang organs via their sprouts and serves as a verification that medications must not be misused.
This syndrome arises from insufficiency of Kidney Qi, resulting in thin lower legs and swollen knee bones, resembling the shape of a crane's knee (*He Xi*). Treatment is suitable with *Quxi San* (Knee-Bending Powder) or *Liujun Dihuang Wan* (Six-Ingredient Rehmannia Pill) supplemented with *Niuxi* (Achyranthes Root) and *Lurong* (Deer Antler Velvet). Another variant develops from prolonged dysentery, presenting with redness, swelling, pain, and suppuration; treat with *Buzhong Yiqi Tang* (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction). If the swelling is hard, painless, and pale in color, it is difficult to cure.
Swelling and pain occur on the limbs or a specific area of the body, potentially migrating to other locations. The skin is red but not round; the swelling is irregular and jagged. Pressing reveals intense heat; this is *Tong Feng* (Wind-Pain/Gout). Treatment uses *Qianghuo* (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), *Duhuo* (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), *Wujia Pi* (Acanthopanacis Cortex), *Weilingxian* (Syneilesis Herba), *Qinjiao* (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix), *Fangfeng* (Saposhnikoviae Radix), *Guizhi* (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and *Qianhu* (Peucedani Radix), each 1 qian, decocted and taken orally. Several doses will lead to spontaneous recovery.
The young son of Fang Yuxiang, a county student, had his left hand and left foot curled tightly against his flesh, unable to extend due to pain. He was cured after five doses of the aforementioned formula. For adults, the herbs must be decocted in wine, consumed to capacity each night. Use 1.5 liang of each herb, boiling in approximately 5–6 jin of wine. Recovery follows completion of the drink. This is a formula I created, which has proven consistently effective.
