Peach Kernel (Shao Ren, 50 seeds, skin and tip removed; sweet flavor, neutral nature) Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, 2 liang, bark removed; pungent flavor, hot nature) Rhubarb (Dahuang, 4 liang) Mirabilite (Mangxiao, 4 liang) Licorice Root (Gancao, 2 liang, honey-fried)
The above five herbs. Boil with seven sheng of water. Decoct to obtain two and a half sheng of liquid. Strain out the dregs. Add Mirabilite. Reheat over fire until slightly boiling, then remove from heat. Take before meals. Warm dose: five ge. Three doses per day. A slight purgation is expected.
Sweet flavors can relieve urgency. Pungent flavors can disperse pathogens. Lower abdominal stiffness and binding are relieved by the sweetness of Peach Kernel. Blood stasis in the lower jiao is dispersed by the pungent and hot nature of Cinnamon Twig. Cold-natured drugs are used to overcome excess. Heat exuberance clots blood; therefore, these two herbs are added to Tiaowei Chengqi Tang (Regulate the Stomach Purging Decoction).
Wang Yutai stated: Upon detailed examination of the above, it should be Cinnamon Bark (Rougui), not Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi). For Cinnamon Twig is light and ascending, treating the upper jiao; Cinnamon Bark is heavy and descending, treating the lower jiao. Cheng Wuji's interpretation following the text is insufficient as evidence.
In Taiyang disease for eight or nine days, after erroneous purgation, if there is chest fullness, irritability, palpitations, difficulty in urination, delirium, heaviness of the whole body, and inability to turn over, Chaihu Jia Longgu Muli Tang (Bupleurum plus Dragon Bone and Oyster Shell Decoction) is indicated.
In Taiyang disease for eight or nine days, which is the time when pathogenic heat wanders, erroneous purgation empties the interior. Consequently, pathogenic heat scatters and mixes, entering the chest, causing fullness, irritability, and palpitations. Entering the Bladder causes difficulty in urination. Entering the Stomach causes delirium. Entering the Spleen causes heaviness of the whole body.
In Taiyang disease for eight or nine days, when pathogenic qi has transformed into heat and is transmitting to the Yang meridians, erroneous purgation empties the interior while heat remains. Chest fullness and irritability indicate Yang-heat lodging in the chest. Palpitations occur because the Heart dislikes heat and the Spirit fails to remain anchored. Difficulty in urination results from interior deficiency and impaired fluid circulation. Delirium is due to Stomach-heat. Heaviness of the whole body and inability to turn over result from Yang-qi moving inward to the interior and failing to nourish the exterior. Administer Chaihu Tang (Bupleurum Decoction) to eliminate chest fullness and irritability. Add Longgu (Dragon Bone), Muli (Oyster Shell), and Qiandan (Lead Monoxide) to consolidate the Spirit and calm palpitations. Add Fuling (Poria) to promote fluid circulation and facilitate urination. Add Dahuang (Rhubarb) to purge Stomach-heat and stop delirium. Add Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig) to circulate Yang-qi and resolve the heaviness and mixed pathogens. Thus, all symptoms will be cured.
