Zhu Fu (One jin, sweet in flavor, cold in nature)
The above single ingredient. Boil with ten dou of water. Reduce to five sheng. Remove the dregs. Add one sheng of white honey and five he of white powder. Cook until fragrant. Mix well. Take warm. Divide into six doses.
Pigs are aquatic animals. Their qi enters the Kidney first. Shaoyin channel receiving exogenous heat is thus resolved by Zhu Fu. White honey is added to moisten dryness and relieve irritability. White powder is added to boost Qi and stop diarrhea.
Shaoyin disease. After two or three days, if there is sore throat, Gancao Tang may be administered. If not cured, Jiegeng Tang is given.
Yang pathogen combats at the Shaoyin channel. Pathogenic heat causes sore throat. Taking Gancao Tang leads to cure. If pain in the throat is caused by the combat between cold and heat, after taking Gancao Tang, if not cured, Jiegeng Tang is given to harmonize the Qi of the Shaoyin channel.
Gancao (Two liang)
The above single ingredient. Boil with three sheng of water. Reduce to one and a half sheng. Remove the dregs. Take warm, seven she per dose. Once daily.
Jiegeng (One liang, pungent and sweet, slightly warm) Gancao (Two liang, sweet and neutral)
The above two ingredients. Boil with three sheng of water. Reduce to one sheng. Remove the dregs. Divide into two warm doses.
Jiegeng is pungent and warm to disperse cold. Gancao is sweet and neutral to clear heat. The combination of sweet flavor and Jiegeng harmonizes cold and heat.
In Shaoyin disease, if the throat is injured, sores form, speech is impaired, and voice is lost, Kujiu Tang is the primary treatment.
Heat damages the collaterals, causing dryness in the meridians and collaterals, leading to sores in the throat, inability to speak, and loss of voice. Kujiu Tang is administered to resolve collateral heat and heal throat sores.
Banxia (Washed and broken, size of a jujube pit, fourteen pieces, pungent and warm) Ji Zi (One egg, yolk removed, place Banxia in the shell, add Kujiu, sweet and slightly cold)
Place Banxia into Kujiu. Use the eggshell as a container. Place it in a knife ring. Set over fire. Bring to boil three times. Remove dregs. Sip slowly and swallow. If not cured, prepare three more doses.
Pungency disperses; the pungency of Banxia opens the voice. Sweetness moderates; the sweetness of Ji Zi relieves throat pain. Acidity astringes; the acidity of Kujiu consolidates throat sores.
Wang Yutai stated: According to Bencao notes, Kujiu refers to vinegar. Cheng Wuji further mentioned the acidity of Kujiu. I believe both name and reality are inconsistent. How do we know that wine with a bitter taste cannot treat sore throat? If one dislikes the hot nature of Kujiu, Banxia Tang is even more pungent, let alone this bitter taste. The character "fa" (disperse/open) in the following text is opposite to "lian" (astringe/consolidate).
In Shaoyin disease, with throat pain, Banxia San and Tang is the primary treatment.
Gancao Tang treats sore throat due to exogenous heat in Shaoyin. Jiegeng Tang treats sore throat due to combat between cold and heat in Shaoyin. Banxia San and Tang treats sore throat due to exogenous cold in Shaoyin.
