Zhu Sha An Shen Wan (Cinnabar Calming the Spirit Pill) is used to treat heat damaging the Pericardium. Symptoms include floating Qi, chaotic heart-mind, mental restlessness due to deficiency, and agitation.
Ingredients: Zhu Sha (Cinnabar, processed by water levigation, 5 qian; half of this amount is used as the coating), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, 5 qian), Huang Lian (Coptis Rhizome, steamed with wine, 6 qian), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis Root, 2.5 qian), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmannia Root, prepared fresh, 1.5 qian).
Preparation and Administration: Excluding Zhu Sha, grind the remaining herbs into a fine powder. Mix with rice dough soaked in decoction and steamed bing (steamed cake) to form pills, sized like millet seeds. Coat the pills with Zhu Sha powder. Take 15 to 30 pills per dose, delivered with Du Shen Tang (Ginseng Decoction) or Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
Analysis of Formula Principles: Medicines said to treat the Heart Meridian generally belong to the Pericardium. Only Zhu Sha, receiving the brightness of Li Fire externally and containing true Yin Mercury internally, can communicate Water and Fire and enter the Heart directly. However, its nature is slow and lacks the rapid effect of swiftly sweeping away Yang flames. Therefore, it requires the bitter cold of Huang Lian to directly curb the pathogenic fire, and the sweet and緩 (soothing) nature of Gan Cao to gently guide the subtle stagnation. This allows both excess fire and deficient fire above the diaphragm to be drained downward via the Small Intestine. It is indeed an accurate formula for treating the disturbance of deficient Yang caused by mental labor injuring the spirit and physical exertion consuming Qi. Is it merely for treating heat damaging the Pericardium? The profundity of this formula also lies in the use of Dang Gui’s pungent and warm property to move blood, and Sheng Di Huang’s moistening property to nourish Yin, thereby blocking the path for fire to reignite. The dynamic balance between movement and stillness, and the precise proportions, each contain profound principles. How can one overlook the painstaking effort of skilled physicians in compounding this formula?
