Urgent desire to suckle but unable to eat. This is due to wind pathogen entering from the umbilicus and accumulating in the Heart and Spleen, causing dry tongue and lips, thus inability to suckle milk. When the lips and mouth are drawn tight due to external pathogens, it is named Umbilical Tetanus (Qifeng), which is often incurable. If there is heat in the Heart and Spleen, with pain at the tip of the tongue preventing suckling, apply Liu Hua San externally. If the eyes are closed, jaw is clenched, crying soundless, unable to suckle but spitting foam, apply Chen Sha Gao to the nipple for the infant to suck. If the sublingual area swells like a small tongue, or the lingual frenulum is pulled and painful, or white spots appear on the gums, all should be pricked with a thread needle to drain toxic blood, and Liu Hua San applied repeatedly. For treating Double Tongue (Chong She) by needling, horizontally pierce the fine vessels at the base tip outwardly with a needle; do not damage the main collateral. Mild cases result in unclear speech, severe cases lead to death from hemorrhage. In cases of sudden fever, thirst for cold drinks, sores in mouth and tongue, and constipation, use Xie Huang San. In post-illness fever, thirst for hot drinks, and loose stools, use Yi Gong San; or if saliva flows from the corners of the mouth, or phlegm and qi are congested, indicating the Spleen's failure to control fluids, use Liu Jun Zi Tang. If the child consumes sweet and fatty foods, or the mother consumes alcohol and wheat products, leading to sores in the child's mouth and tongue, use Qing Wei San.
Spleen deficiency heat causes the lingual frenulum to pull tight, resulting in the tongue protruding slightly and retracting frequently, known as Playing Tongue (Nong She), belonging to Heart and Spleen deficiency; use Wen Pi San. If heat is present, use Ren Shen An Wei San. If the tongue extends long and fails to retract for a long time, known as Vomiting Tongue (Tu She), it is due to accumulated heat in the Heart and Spleen, possibly accompanied by mouth and tongue sores, thirst for cold drinks, belonging to excess heat in the Stomach meridian; use Xie Huang San. If drinking water is preferred, it indicates Spleen and Stomach deficiency with scanty body fluids. Accompanied by sallow complexion, emaciation, and five-palm heat, it is Gan Emaciation (Gan Shou); use Hu Huang Lian Wan. Playing Tongue appearing during an unresolved major illness is a ominous sign.
Dan Liu syndrome, commonly known as Wandering Wind (You Feng), arises from fetal toxin lodging in the interstices (Cou Li), struggling with Qi and Blood, manifesting on the skin. The red halo that wanders indicates blood affected by wind-heat. If it appears on the chest and hypochondrium and wanders to the limbs, it is mild; if it appears on the head, face, and limbs, spreading to the chest, back, hypochondrium, and abdomen, it is severe. The Qian Jin Fang states: Red Wandering Wind swelling, if it covers the whole body and enters the Heart and abdomen, can be fatal. Apply finely powdered Fu Long Gan mixed with egg white; keep moist. Alternatively, add hair ash and pig fat for application. Ancients stated: Cases starting from the limbs and entering the abdomen or scrotum are untreatable. One should forcefully suck toxic blood from all affected areas, gathering it to one spot, then urgently prick and drain it. Internally administer a small dose of Huo Ming Yin. Needling is contraindicated for infants under 100 days. If the abdomen is distended with obstruction of urination and defecation, the toxin has entered internally; use Da Lian Qiao Tang. Some may survive. Alternatively, use Xiong Huang 2 fen, Zhu Sha 1 fen, processed by water levigation, mixed with raw honey water, warmed over water bath, taken orally several spoonfuls regularly. Toxicity is resolved through purgation. On the lower abdomen, flanks, or scrotum, sudden red swelling like rosy clouds, moving不定ly and affecting multiple sites, use seven white-shelled walnuts crushed with shells, Chuan Lian 1 qian 5 fen, raw Gan Cao Jie peeled 2 qian. Decoct in water, warm, and take frequently. In rural areas lacking medical access, crush fresh Radish (Lai Fu) to extract juice for topical application or oral administration. Wrap the dregs in silk, warm them, and apply to the swollen area. Monkey Gan (Hou Gan) resembles round tinea, is red, starts from the buttocks, spreads over the body, with peeling skin around the edges exposing red flesh. Buttock Gan resembles a monkey. It is caused by fetal toxic pathogens accumulating in the Kidney and manifesting. Untreated urgently, it leads to death. Use Chuan Lian 6 fen, raw Gan Cao 6 fen, Ru Xiang and Mo Yao calcined, Xiong Huang water-levigated 4 fen each, Qing Dai purified, Zhu Sha water-levigated half part each, Xi Niu Huang 1 fen. Grind into fine powder, mix well. Take half part per dose, mixed with honey, administered with Deng Xin Cao decoction. Three times daily, two times at night. Externally, use Jing Qing Dai 2 qian, Huang Bo end-fried, Lian Qiao charred, Ren Zhong Bai calcined and quenched with vinegar, Tu Bei Mu de-centered and fried until brown 5 qian. Grind into powder, mix well. Before use, add Xi Niu Huang and Bing Pian 0.5 qian each. Mix with sesame oil for application; highly effective.
