Upon birth, the infant's body may appear as if scalded by hot water or burned by fire; this is caused by the mother's excessive consumption of rich and greasy foods during pregnancy. The mother should take Qingwei San (Clear Stomach Powder) and Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder) to clear heat from the Qi and Blood; the infant may also occasionally drink a few drops. If the infant has no skin and presents with redness and fever, it is due to excessive stomach fire in the mother. Prepared gypsum powder mixed with pearl powder can be applied externally. Some cases are caused by residual toxins from the father and should be treated according to the principles for Meichuang (Syphilis) toxin. It is particularly beneficial for the infant to lie on banana leaves during summer months. If the infant has no skin but is not red, it is due to deficiency of the Spleen and Lung in the mother. Powder of Ren Shen (Ginseng Root) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodes Rhizome), mixed with pearl powder, can be applied externally. The Spleen governs muscles, and the Lung governs skin and hair; thus, the disease location is identified as the Spleen and Lung. Both mother and infant should take Baoyuan Tang (Preserve the Origin Decoction). If sores appear on the forehead, it indicates that Fire and Earth (Damp-Heat) have combined, attacking the Marrow Sea (brain); this is difficult to treat. If sores appear on the feet, it indicates Yin deficiency with hyperactive Fire; the child will die before reaching five years of age. If the infant, within one month of birth, exhibits mouth puckering, clenched fists, and weak spine, it signifies that pathogenic factors are strong while healthy Qi is weak in the Liver and Kidney. If these symptoms appear within three days, the condition is incurable. If the male infant's fingers curl inward, or the female infant's fingers point outward, the condition is still treatable; Gouteng San (Uncaria Powder) is the primary formula.
Infants suffering from Jin Feng (Lockjaw) contract heat in the womb, causing toxins to flow into the Heart and Spleen; after birth, they are further attacked by Wind pathogens, resulting in closed eyes, locked jaw, inability to cry, tongue surface resembling millet grains, and foaming at the mouth. If onset occurs within seven days, mortality is nearly 100%. The condition known as Cuo Kou (Mouth Puckering) arises from fetal heat combined with Wind entering through the umbilicus into the Heart and Spleen, leading to yellowish-red complexion, rapid breathing, hoarseness or silence, stiff tongue, cyanotic lips, mouth puckering, and abdominal distension. Urgent moxibustion of seven moxa cones should be applied to the fontanelle. If the infant does not cry after moxibustion and develops convulsions ("hanging intestines") with foaming at the mouth, the condition is incurable. The condition known as Qi Feng (Umbilical Wind) occurs when Water-Dampness and Wind pathogens enter the Heart and Spleen after umbilical cord separation, causing abdominal distension, umbilical swelling, cold and extended limbs, crying without sucking milk, and potentially progressing to mouth puckering and convulsions. Onset within seven days is most critical. A powder made from She Xiang (Musk), Xi Wei (Scorpion Tail), Tong Lv (Verdigris), Qing Fen (Calomel), and Chen Sha (Cinnabar) should be administered with ginger decoction. If the area around the umbilicus turns blue-black, accompanied by clenched fists and locked jaw, it is classified as internal convulsion and is incurable. If vesicles resembling millet grains appear on the gums, pricking them open provides relief, and medication is unnecessary.
