Qibao Meiran Dan (Seven-Treasure Beard-Beautifying Pill): Tonifies the Kidney Yuan (Original Qi), darkens beard and hair, prolongs life, and benefits longevity.
Ingredients: Chi Bai Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata) (Select those weighing over one jin; use equal parts of red and white varieties. Scrape off the skin with a bamboo knife, slice into large pieces, steam and sun-dry together with black soybeans nine times, then discard the black soybeans). Chuan Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (Remove the sprouts, eight liang. Steam and sun-dry together with Polygoni Multiflori Radix Praeparata and black soybeans, slice and bake). Buguzhi (Psoraleae Fructus) (Eight liang. Stir-fry together with Sesami Nigris Semen until no popping sound is heard, then discard the sesame seeds). Chi Bai Fuling (Poria) (Remove the skin, eight liang each for red and white varieties. Crush into coarse powder. For the white variety, mix with human milk and steam; for the red variety, mix with cow milk and steam). Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen) (Wash clean, steam in wine overnight, boil in water for the time it takes two incense sticks to burn, crush into silk-like strands, form into cakes, bake dry, and take the pure powder, eight liang). Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (Remove the tips, wash clean with wine, slice and sun-dry avoiding fire, take the pure weight of eight liang). Gouqizi (Lycii Fructus) (Eight liang, crush and sun-dry).
Preparation and Administration: Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. Form pills using refined white honey, sized like longan seeds. Chew one pill daily in the morning before noon and before bed, taken with salt water, boiling water, or warm wine respectively. Avoid consuming radish (Raphani Fructus), pig blood, fermented foods, and vinegar.
Wujin Dan (Black Gold Pill): Used for dyeing beard black, providing long-lasting color.
Preparation: Take a piece of high-quality Qingyan ink. Embed it into the stem of a large red Impatiens balsamina flower. Re-cover the hollowed-out area and tie it securely. Coat with mud. Remove any flowers to prevent seed formation. Wait for more than two months, then retrieve from the soil. Take a green persimmon, remove the calyx, hollow it out, and insert the ink block. Re-cover the calyx and bury it in horse manure for seven days and nights. Store in a lead box. To use, grind with turtle urine and apply. The blackness penetrates the hair root and does not fade for a month. This method does not damage the beard.
Method for obtaining turtle urine: Support the turtle's abdomen with a three-legged bamboo stand so its feet do not touch the ground and it cannot move. Place it in a large basin to catch the urine. Moisten pig saliva, dip it in fine musk powder, and rub it into the turtle's nostrils; urine will flow. Alternatively, roll musk into a paper strip, burn it to produce smoke, and熏 (fumigate) the nose; urine will also flow.
Chijin San (Red Gold Powder): Used for dyeing beard, resulting in a black, moist, non-drying finish that does not damage the beard with long-term use.
Ingredients: Hongtongluo (Red Copper Filings) (Filings from beaten red copper vessels, washed clean with boiling water. Stir-fry in a copper spoon with rice vinegar seven times. Dosage: three qian per batch). Chuan Wubeizi (Chinese Gall) (Those shaped like water chestnuts are best. Crush to bean-sized particles, remove dust. Stir-fry in an oil-free pan until red smoke appears, followed by black smoke, forming a paste-like consistency. If not fully cooked, it won't be black; if overcooked, the beard turns green. Proper heat control is crucial. Wrap in a wet blue cloth, press underground to form a block. Dosage: one liang per batch). Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix) (Dry variety, crushed into coarse powder. Stir-fry until black but retaining medicinal properties. Avoid contact with iron tools). Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum) (Three qian). Moshizi (Magnetitum / Hematite - Note: Context suggests a mineral used for coloring, often interpreted as Magnetite or similar iron ore in historical contexts, but literally "Stone without Stone" or specific local mineral. Given the context of "blackening", it likely refers to a specific iron-containing mineral or processed stone. In modern TCM pharmacopoeia, this term is rare/obsolete, often substituted or referring to specific local minerals. We will translate descriptively based on function). *Correction*: "Mo Shizi" usually refers to Magnetitum (Ci Shi) or sometimes specific iron ores used in external applications. However, strictly following the text, we list it as Moshizi. Let's stick to the literal entity extraction.
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above five herbs into extremely fine powders. Mix with Feimian (Sifted Wheat Flour) three qian. Use two to three qian per application, depending on the amount of beard. For every qian of powder, add one li of salt. Mix with thick brewed tea slurry to form a thin paste. Heat in a double boiler until it smells like jujube and shines like lacquer. Stir well. First, wash the beard with soap to remove grease and dry it. Apply while hot using a brush; if it cools, it won't darken properly. Pinch the beard with fingers and knead the mixture evenly into the hairs. Cover with paper after application. Wash with warm water the next morning. Continue for two to three nights for a shiny black result. After half a month, if roots turn white, apply a small amount only to the white roots as described. Do not re-dye black areas.
Alternative Formula: If Moshizi and Heshouwu are unavailable, substitute with Qingyan (Green Rock Salt) three qian and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma) one qian.
