The first month is called the embryo (Taipei), governed by the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian (Zu Jueyin Gan Jing). This meridian has little Qi and abundant Blood.
The second month, the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian (Zu Shaoyang Dan Jing) governs the fetus; at this stage, it resembles initial paste (Shi Gao). This meridian has abundant Qi and little Blood.
The third month is called the beginning of the fetus (Shi Tai), governed by the Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian (Shou Shaoyin Xin Jing). This meridian has little Blood and abundant Qi.
Prescription: Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Fu Shen (Poria with Hostwood), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) (use less when cold), Qiao Sha (Amomi Fructus Shell) (use more when cold), Du Zhong (Eucommiae Cortex), Zao Ren (Ziziphi Spinosae Semen), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Rou Gui (Cinnamomi Cortex).
In the fourth month, the fetal form takes shape, governed by the Mingmen Ministerial Fire (Hand Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian). Remove Zao Ren and Fu Shen, add Shu Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata) 3 qian. The fetus begins to receive the essence of Water to circulate blood vessels. This meridian has abundant Qi and little Blood.
In the fifth month, the fetus becomes active, governed by the Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian (Zu Taiyin Pi Jing). Remove Rou Gui, add Bai Zhu 2 qian. The fetus begins to receive the essence of Fire to form its Qi. This meridian has little Blood and abundant Qi.
In the sixth month, sinews and bones are established, governed by the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian (Zu Yangming Wei Jing). Add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix) 5 fen. If Lung Qi is deficient, increase the dosage several times. The fetus begins to receive the essence of Metal to form its sinews. This meridian has abundant Qi and little Blood.
In the seventh month, hair grows, governed by the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian (Shou Taiyin Fei Jing). Reduce Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) to 3 fen, add Huang Qin to 2 qian. The fetus begins to receive the essence of Wood to form its bones. This meridian has little Blood and abundant Qi.
In the eighth month, internal organs are complete, governed by the Hand Yangming Large Intestine Meridian (Shou Yangming Da Chang Jing). Add Ren Shen 1.5 qian. The fetus begins to receive the essence of Earth to form its skin. This meridian has abundant Qi and abundant Blood.
In the ninth month, grain Qi enters the stomach, governed by the Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian (Zu Shaoyin Shen Jing). Do not use the original prescription; instead, use Kuan Tai San (Womb-Widening Powder). The fetus begins to receive the essence of Stone to form its hair. This meridian has little Blood and abundant Qi.
Prescription: Dang Gui Shen, Yi Mu Cao (Leonuri Herba), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), Du Zhong.
In the tenth month, all spirits are complete, governed by the Foot Taiyang Bladder Meridian (Zu Taiyang Pang Guang Jing), using the same formula as the ninth month. Use Cui Sheng San (Labor-Delivering Powder) at delivery. At this stage, internal organs, joints, and human spirits are all present. This meridian has little Qi and abundant Blood.
Prescription: Dang Gui, Zhi Ke, Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Yi Mu Cao, Chuan Xiong, Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Hong Hua (Carthami Flos), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix).
Extraordinary Formula. For dysentery accompanied by heart pain occurring one or two days postpartum.

One dose per day. If there is breast toxin (Ru Du), add Bai Zhi.
For fever and loss of appetite five to six days postpartum, resembling symptoms of Shang Han (Cold Damage).
Prescription: Chi Shao, Tao Ren, Dang Gui Wei, Chen Pi, Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Shan Zha Rou (Crataegi Fructus Flesh), Zhi Ke, Xiang Fu, Xuan Hu (Corydalis Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Rou Gui, add Bai Zhi.
Powder Formula:
Liu Ji Nu, Shan Zha, Xiang Fu, Mian Hua Zi (Gossypii Semen), Wu Dou (Sojae Semen Nigrum).
All stir-fried and ground into powder (replace Xuan Hu with Xiang Fu; adding Jing Jie is excellent). Take 2 qian delivered with Sha Ren decoction.
Modifications of Si Wu Tang (Ancient Formula):
Si Wu Tang consists of Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Shao Yao, and Di Huang; it is a good prescription for various gynecological diseases.
It regulates and nourishes Blood and treats deficiency damage; for pregnancy and childbirth, no formula surpasses this one.
Adding Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, and Gan Cao makes Ba Wu Tang, which is most effective for Qi deficiency and Blood weakness.
Shi Quan Da Bu Tang adds Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), greatly tonifying True Yuan and Essence-Blood.
If combined with Ren Shen and Su Ye, it is called Bu Xin Tang, suitable for heart deficiency and Blood scarcity causing dreams and palpitations.
Postpartum patients who catch cold can take this formula without modifications; its effect is miraculous.
Afternoon fever indicates Yin deficiency; add Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) and Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) to cure.
Bone-steaming consumption heat pairs with Zi Shi Ying (Fluoriti Spatulae) and Bie Jia (Trionycis Carapax); Zhi Mu and Huang Bo can also include Gu Pi (Borricis Cortex).
When a woman's menstruation arrives suddenly like malaria, add Xiao Chai Hu Tang (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) to the harmonizing soup.
If menstrual flow occurs intermittently during pregnancy, add E Jiao (Colla Corii Asini) and Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) to stop leaking fetus.
If menstruation is overdue due to scanty Yin Blood, add Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix) and Ren Shen to the base formula.
If abdominal distension causes pain due to accumulated Qi, taking Xiang Fu and E Zhu (Curcumae Rhizoma) will resolve it naturally.
If menstrual blood is purple and arrives early, add Huang Qin, Lian Xin (Coptidis Rhizoma), and Mu Li (Ostreae Concha) to the formula.
If lower abdominal stasis causes painful stagnation, do not delay using Tao Ren, Hong Hua, Wu Yao (Linderae Radix), and Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata).
For thin women with Blood dryness and amenorrhea, add Tao Ren to the base formula.
For obese women with pale blood indicating Phlegm, combine with Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction).
If menstrual flow is excessive, Huang Qin, Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), and Huang Bo can be used together.
Add Jing Jie (Schizonepetae Herba) and Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) to raise and harmonize Qi.
Adding Huang Qin and Bai Zhu to the formula aids in calming the fetus; for fetal pain, use Sha Ren, Zi Su (Perillae Folium), and Yu Jin (Curcumae Longae Rhizoma).
If the abdomen abnormally enlarges forming edema, and chest/heart Qi rebels feeling hard like a drum,
Decoct Li Yu Tang (Carp Decoction) with Fu Ling, Bai Zhu, and Huang Qin; reduce Di Huang and Chuan Xiong, add Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and Jie Geng.
If fetal Qi is unsettled causing chest oppression, add Zhi Ke and Jie Geng to promote free flow.
If a pregnant woman has vexation, it is called Zi Fan (Fetal Vexation); rely on Huang Qin, Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Tuber), and Fu Ling.
Chuan Xiong and Dang Gui together are named Fo Shou San (Buddha's Hand Powder); brewing urgently at labor ensures safe delivery.
If difficult labor prevents birth, combine with Xue Yu Tan (Huminis Capitis Carbonisatum) and Bai Zhi.
Jiao Jiang (Carbonized Ginger) treats postpartum heat; Gan Cao and large doses of Chuan Xiong tonify Yin Blood.
If sweating is profuse, reduce Chuan Xiong in the formula; urgently administer Ren Shen to prevent Qi collapse.
Postpartum Blood confusion leads to Blood Vertigo (Xue Yun); excessive lochia discharge causes mental fatigue.
Ze Lan (Lycopi Herba), Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Jing Jie, Ren Shen, and Gan Cao form Qing Hun San (Soul-Clearing Powder) to settle vertigo.
Hei Shen San removes Chuan Xiong, adds Gui Zhi and Gan Jiang; Zhi Gan Cao, Hei Dou (Sojae Semen Nigrum), and Pu Huang (Typhae Pollen) are stir-fried.
After lochia clears, chest and abdominal fullness are removed; taken with wine, the effect is extraordinary.
Why is postpartum lochia so scant? If there are no other symptoms and spirit is good,
Suddenly experiencing chills, fever, and abdominal pain shows that Hei Shen San is truly wonderful.
Postpartum convulsions occur because Blood does not arrive; abdominal pain, fever, and distension are unbearable.
Chai Hu, Fo Shou San, Ling Zhi (Trogopterori Faeces), Ze Lan, Qiang Huo, and Hong Hua must be carefully arranged.
Postpartum requires Si Wu Tang; for first-time mothers, pair with Jiao Jiang.
Using Shao Yao initially after birth damages generating Qi; Ni Ge (greasy chest) especially dislikes Shu Di Huang.
For slippery intestines, Di Huang and Dang Gui should be avoided; for profuse sweating, remove Chuan Xiong.
For Blood deficiency abdominal pain, Chi Shao is good; modified Si Wu Tang is a secret of sages.
Shi Quan Ji Yin Wan: Dang Gui Shen (wine-washed), Shu Di Huang, Xiang Fu (wine-boiled 4 liang), Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (2.5 liang), Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus), Ren Shen (2 liang), Qi Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) (2 liang, remove veins/stems, boil with Xiang Fu in wine/vinegar for one shichen, pound, bake), Chuan Xiong, Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Zi Shi Ying (calcined, each 1.5 liang), Ze Lan (1 liang), Zi He Che (Placenta Human) (one piece, pierced with silver needle, remove purple veins, wash white with wine).
Slice the above herbs, place with Placenta in a clay pot. Add 3 bowls of aged wine, 1 bowl of aged rice vinegar, 1 bowl of clear child's urine, and several bowls of rice water. Mix evenly so herbs float about one cun deep. Cover tightly to prevent air leakage. Slowly cook over mulberry wood fire until the Placenta melts and juice dries. Remove, pound extremely fine, shape into cakes. Sun-dry and moon-expose for three days and nights, ideally during the full moon to absorb solar and lunar essences. Bake dry, grind to powder, mix with honey to make pills the size of wu zi (wuze tree seeds). Take 50 pills on an empty stomach with light salt water, followed by breakfast to guide the medicine downward. Avoid raw radish.
Whenever menstruation is overdue, or scanty or absent, it is due to Cold-Heat and Scanty Blood. The Chi pulse must be weak and faint; add Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex) 5 qian (3 qian in summer), Huang Qi 1 liang (roasted). If early, it is Heat-Blood. The pulse must be rapid; add Tiao Qin (Scutellariae Radix) 2 liang (wine-fried), Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) 1.5 liang (wine-fried). For abdominal pain, add Shao Yao 1 liang (wine-fried). Pain before onset indicates Blood Excess and Qi Stagnation; clots indicate Qi Congestion. Pulse wiry, rapid, slippery, and large: add Yan Hu 1 liang (wine-fried), Chen Pi 8 fen, Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Chai Hu Shao (Bupleuri Radix Tip) 5 qian. Pain after onset indicates Qi and Blood Deficiency; Chi pulse must be deficient, choppy, and tight; add Hei Jiang (Carbonized Ginger) 3 qian, Bai Fu Ling (Poria) 1 liang, Gui Xin 5 qian (3 qian in summer). Five to seven days later, continuous dull abdominal pain or dripping discharge indicates Blood Stagnation due to Qi obstruction not yet cleared. Chi pulse sinking and choppy, or sinking and wiry: add Mu Xiang 5 qian, Chai Hu 6 qian. Purple or black color indicates severe Blood Heat. Chi pulse surging and rapid: add Tiao Qin and Huang Bo each 1 liang, Chao Sheng Di Huang 1.5 liang (wine-soaked). Overdue with pale color: obese people have Damp-Phlegm, add Fu Ling, Cang Zhu (Coix Seed Water/Light Salt Water fried), Chen Pi each 1 liang, Bai Zhu 5 qian, reduce Shu Di Huang by 1 liang. Thin people have Blood Deficiency mixed with Water, add Gui Xin 5 qian. Intermittent flow or chills/fever: add Chai Hu 8 qian, Bai Fu Ling 1 liang. For irregular menstruation with excessive leukorrhea: obese people primarily due to Stomach Damp-Phlegm flowing down, add Zhi Cang Zhu, Bai Fu Ling 1.5 liang, reduce Shu Di Huang by 1 liang. Thin people have abundant Qi and scanty Blood, Spleen Deficiency, add Mu Xiang 5 qian, Mu Li (calcined), Chi Shi Zhi (Kaolinitum) (calcined), Bai Fu Ling each 1 liang.
For frequent metrorrhagia and metrostaxis: reduce Xiang Fu and Ai Ye each by 1 liang, add Jing Jie Sui (Schizonepetae Spica) (fried) 1 liang, Huang Qin 1.5 liang.
For Blood Beng (profuse bleeding): if volume is large, add E Jiao 1 liang, Hei Jiang 5 qian, Huang Qi 1 liang (roasted).
For Yuan Qi weakness and amenorrhea: add Niu Xi 2 liang. If Cold, add Gui Xin 5 qian;
If Heat, add Huang Qin 1 liang (wine-fried).
For maidservants or concubines often disliked by the principal wife,必定 having much depression leading to irregular menstruation: add Zhi Fang Xiang Fu (Processed Cyperi Rhizoma) 2 liang. Or if Blood weak and Heart deficient, experiencing fear and restlessness during intercourse causing Essence-Qi dispersion: add Hu Po (Amber) (separately ground), Zao Ren (Sand-roasted lightly), Fu Shen each 1 liang, Chen Sha (Cinnabaris) (prepared), Zi Shi Ying each 5 qian. This formula treats infertility for ten years.
Regulating Menstruation Formula taken near the time of menses for three doses: Wu Yao, Fu Zi, Shao Yao, Chuan Xiong, Dang Gui, Tao Ren, Suo (likely Gan Cao error), Gui Zhi, Xiao Hui.
Dang Gui (3 qian), Fu Xiong (Ligusticum), Hong Hua (wine-fried), Xiao Hui (Illicium Verum), Xiang Fu (wine-washed, fried), Chi Shao (each 1 qian), Wu Yao (1 qian), Yan Hu (2 qian vinegar-fried), Tao Ren (skin/kernel removed, 4 qian), Chi Gui (Cinnamomum Cassia Bark) (5 fen wine-fried), Jiang (3 slices), Deng Xin (Junci Medulla) (10 roots).
