上《千金翼方》。)
The tip of the nose appears cyan (blue-green), indicating abdominal pain; if accompanied by aversion to cold, the prognosis is poor and death may ensue. If the tip of the nose is slightly black, it indicates water retention in the body; if yellow, there is cold in the chest (likely combined with dampness); if white, it indicates loss of blood. If a slight redness appears out of season, the prognosis is poor and death may ensue. Eyes fixed straight ahead without movement indicate an untreatable condition. Furthermore, cyan color indicates pain, black indicates exhaustion/labor injury, red indicates wind pathogen, yellow indicates difficulty in urination, and bright/shining color indicates retained fluid/phlegm-fluid (Jin Gui Yao Lue).
If the face is cyan and the philtrum (Ren Zhong) is inverted/upturned, death occurs within three days. A face lacking luster with black teeth indicates death. Black complexion with fixed gaze and aversion to wind indicates death. Black complexion with fullness in the hypochondrium and inability to turn over indicates death. Cyan-black complexion with sudden edema indicates death (Shang Zang Jing).
Redness appearing on the ears, eyes, and cheekbones indicates death within five days (cheekbones sometimes read as forehead). Blackness emerging from the hairline of the forehead, extending straight down the nasal bridge and to both cheekbones, also indicates death within five days. Blackness starting above the ears, eyes, or nose and gradually spreading into the mouth indicates death (meaning starting from the ear, eye, or nose, gradually entering the mouth). Whether for patients or healthy individuals, if black or white color appears and invades the eyes, nose, and mouth, death occurs within three days.
In liver disease, if the skin is white, death occurs on Geng-Xin days (Metal days). In heart disease, if the eyes are black, death occurs on Ren-Gui days (Water days). In spleen disease, if the lips are cyan, death occurs on Jia-Yi days (Wood days). In lung disease, if the cheeks are red and eyes swollen, death occurs on Bing-Ding days (Fire days). In kidney disease, if the face is swollen and lips yellow, death occurs on Wu-Ji days (Earth days) (Mai Jing).
Commentary: The face governs Qi, belongs to Yang, and corresponds to the Six Fu Organs. The eyes govern Blood, belong to Yin, and correspond to the Five Zang Organs.
Regarding the observation of the five colors and unusual pulses: Face yellow with eye cyan, face yellow with eye red, face yellow with eye white, and face yellow with eye black all indicate survival. However, face cyan with eye red, face red with eye white, face cyan with eye black, face black with eye white, and face red with eye cyan all indicate death (Su Wen).
In Spring, if the face is cyan and eyes red, new diseases can be treated and will heal by Summer (this is face generating eye color). In Summer, if the face is red and eyes yellow, new diseases can be treated and will heal by Late Summer. In Late Summer, if the face is yellow and eyes white, new diseases can be treated and will heal by Autumn. In Autumn, if the face is white and eyes black, new diseases can be treated and will heal by Winter. In Winter, if the face is black and eyes cyan, new diseases can be treated and will heal by Spring.
It is stated: This is because the ruling color of the four seasons appears, so treatment will surely lead to recovery. The Five Zang Organs correspond to the Five Elements. When diseased, according to the timing, colors appear on the face and eyes, just like divination by tortoise shell burning, where omens of good or bad fortune manifest on the surface.
For a patient whose natural color is cyan, it should resemble the luster of cyan jade, shiny and moist, which is good; the face should not look like dull cyan-blue. If the face is white and eyes cyan, this violates normalcy, caused by excessive drinking, exposure to wind, wind pathogen entering the Lung, connecting to the Gallbladder, causing reckless leakage of Gallbladder Qi, thus making the eyes cyan. Even if heaven saves, life cannot be restored (Mai Jing, Qian Jin Fang, both state face yellow with eye cyan, which is face overcoming eye color).
For a patient whose natural color is red, it should resemble the luster of rooster comb, shiny and moist, which is good; the face should not look like dark ochre earth. If the face is red and eyes white, due to worry, anger, and overthinking, Heart Qi is internally depleted. Although the complexion may seem improved, prepare coffins immediately; death will occur within ten days.
For a patient whose natural color is yellow, it should resemble the luster of ox gallstone, shiny and moist, which is good; it should not look like yellow earth from a stove. If the face is cyan and eyes yellow, death occurs in five days. The patient is bedridden, suffering from heart pain and shortness of breath, with Spleen exhaustion and internal injury. Recovery takes one hundred days; the patient wishes to rise but hesitates. Due to sitting on the ground, standing requires leaning on the bed. Those who can cure this are called divine physicians.
For a patient whose natural color is white, it should resemble the luster of jade disc, shiny and moist, which is good; the face should not look like white chalk. If the face is white and eyes black (suspected to be eye cyan in original text), there is no hope of life. This is due to excessive indulgence in alcohol, depletion of vitality, and empty/consumed blood vessels. Even if Qi Bo were present, nothing could be done (Mai Jing lacks the phrase "excessive indulgence in alcohol").
For a patient whose natural color is black, it should resemble the luster of double-lacquered wood, shiny and moist, which is good; the face should not look like charcoal. If the face is black and eyes white, death occurs in eight days, indicating internal injury to Kidney Qi (Mai Jing lacks the character "ye" and has "disease cause accumulation" below; by analogy, eye white should be eye red).
Patients with face yellow and eye cyan do not die, but if the cyan resembles grass dye, they die. Patients with face yellow and eye red do not die, but if the red resembles coagulated blood, they die. Patients with face yellow and eye white do not die, but if the white resembles dry bone, they die. Patients with face yellow and eye black... [text missing/variant] ...die. Patients with harmonious/equal face and eye colors do not die ("Ju Deng" means not changing their normal state, with no single part being abnormally different) (Qian Jin Yi Fang).
