**Gecko (Shou Gong)**
Also known as Gecko (*Gekko gecko*).
Salty, cold in nature, slightly toxic. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Treats stroke-induced convulsions and epilepsy, leprosy, and scrofula. Combined with silkworm excrement (*Can Sha*) and wheat flour, stir-fried and ground into powder, taken with a decoction of cypress leaves (*Bo Ye Tang*), to treat wind-induced leprosy.
Prepared using child's urine, wine, or salt, according to specific methods.
**Bungarus multicinctus / Agkistrodon (Bai Hua She - White-spotted Snake)**
*(Note: The original text lacks a specific title for this paragraph, but the description matches Bai Hua She/Woody Snake characteristics commonly found in materia medica.)*
Salty, neutral, warm in nature. Slightly toxic. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Assists yang, benefits essence, calms asthma, and stops coughing. Combined with Ginseng (*Ren Shen*), beeswax, and glutinous rice, it treats asthmatic cough due to deficiency-cold. Combined with Ginseng (*Ren Shen*) and Prepared Rehmannia Root (*Shu Di Huang*), it tonifies weakness due to yang deficiency.
The efficacy lies primarily in the tail, while the toxicity is concentrated in the eyes. Remove the eyes, or remove the head and feet, wash away impurities within the scales, then roast with butter (*Su*), or roast with honey (*Mi*), or soak thoroughly in wine, slow-roast over paper until yellow, and grind for use. A true specimen can be held in the mouth and run without panting. Suitable for use in pills and powders. Contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity, and asthma/cough caused by wind-pathogens.
**Zaocys dhumnades (Wu Shao She - Black-striped Snake)**
*(Note: The original text contains a category marker "(Five types of snakes)" followed by this description, which corresponds to Wu Shao She.)*
Beneficial when processed by fire. Dreads magnetite (*Ci Shi*) and wine.
Salty, sweet, neutral in nature. Toxic. Dispels wind-malaria, removes corneal opacity, treats spasms and convulsions, kills three types of parasites, treats sores and scabies, stops vomiting and reflux, heals intestinal hemorrhoids, and stabilizes convulsions and epilepsy. Combined with Angelica Sinensis (*Dang Gui*), it treats peripatetic throat wind (*Chan Hou Feng*).
Combined with Trichosanthes Root (*Hua Fen*) and sheep liver, it treats corneal opacity after smallpox. Mixed with human breast milk, it treats hemoptysis in children. Mixed with pig masseter bone marrow, applied topically, it treats craniotabes (delayed closure of fontanelles) in infants. Calcined to retain its properties, ground into powder, it treats sudden severe ear pain. (If there are insects moving inside causing unbearable pain, blowing the powder in with a goose feather will cure it immediately.)
Snakes that are greenish-yellow are not used in medicine; white ones are superior. Wash clean with soap pod water, wrap around bamboo, or soak in wine, vinegar, or honey, then roast until yellow for use. Alternatively, seal with salt mud and calcine, or char to retain properties, processing according to symptoms. Contraindicated for postpartum women.
**Nan She (Southern Snake)**
Also known as Southern Snake (*Nan She*).
Sweet, bitter, cold in nature. Slightly toxic. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Brightens the eyes, cools blood, eliminates malnutrition parasites, kills parasites, treats various wind syndromes, and stops heart pain.
A true specimen swims rapidly in a circular motion when placed in water.
**Qishe (Qi Snake / Agkistrodon)**
Also known as Qi Snake (*Qishe*).
Beneficial when combined with wine.
Sweet, salty, warm in nature. Toxic. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Treats diseases of the extremities caused by wind pathogens (extremities refer to the limbs), penetrates bones to search out wind, arrests convulsions, and stops tremors. Its nature is agile and penetrating; it can move internally through the zang-fu organs and externally through the skin, guiding other herbs directly to the sites of wind-diseases. It is suitable for treating leprosy, knee-joint deformity resembling a crane's knee (*He Xi Feng*), and claw-like foot deformities (*Ji Ju Feng*). Combined with Clove (*Ding Xiang*), it treats blackened and sunken smallpox lesions. (Roasted White-spotted Snake 3 qian, large Cloves 7 pieces, ground into powder; take 0.5 fen each time, washed down with water and light wine, produces miraculous effects.)
Produced in Qizhou. The head and tail are highly toxic; the tail has claw-like projections. Remove one chi from both the head and tail, soak in wine for five days, changing the wine daily. After removing the wine, bury underground overnight. Strip off skin and bones, then roast for use. Wind exposure must be strictly avoided after taking it. Contraindicated for those with deficiency and weakness.
