[Saigan Blood (Blood of Wild Goat)]
Salty, cold. Disperses blood stasis and harmonizes injuries, possessing remarkable efficacy.
Cuscutae Semen (Tusizi, 菟丝子) serves as the guiding herb (shi).
[Horn of Sheep (Yangjiao)]
Bitter, salty, slightly cold. Enters the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Treats qi stagnation in all joints, eliminates wind-induced headache, treats Qingmang (blindness or blurred vision), stops epilepsy, and kills scabies mites. Calcined to retain its nature, ground into powder, and taken with wine, it treats postpartum alternating chills and fever, extreme chest stuffiness, and distension.
[Deer Antler Velvet (Lurong)]
Mabore (Mabo, 麻勃) serves as the guiding herb (shi).
Sweet, warm. Pure yang. Enters the blood aspect of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Unblocks the Qi residence of the Du Mai (Governing Vessel), reaches the Yang pathways of the Extraordinary Vessels, generates essence, supplements marrow, nourishes blood, and benefits yang. Stops nocturnal emission with sexual dreams, treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea, breaks up blood stasis, disperses carbuncles and swellings, treats stone strangury (lithuria), and stops urinary enuresis. For all conditions caused by yang deficiency leading to deafness, dim vision, vertigo, and deficiency-type dysentery, self-healing occurs upon obtaining this substance. Combined with Cistanche Deserticola Root (Rongshou, 肉苁蓉) and Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), it treats alcohol-induced diarrhea and emaciation. Combined with Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) and [text missing], it promotes the filling of smallpox pustules. Combined with Dryopteris Crassirhizoma Rhizome (Gouji, 狗脊), Ampelopsis Japonica Rhizome (Bailian, 白蔹), and Artemisia Argyi Folium (Aiye, 艾), it treats persistent cold-type leukorrhea.
Deer antler velvet resembling red jade is excellent; those that appear like rotten wood when broken are preferred. Use the meat without hair and bone, or roast with sheep fat, or roast after soaking in good wine, or boil with Polygonatum Sibiricum Juice (Huangjingzhi, 黄精汁), or steam after soaking in aged wine, according to the specific condition. Contraindicated for those with yin deficiency and fire hyperactivity.
Small white worms exist within deer antler velvet; if inhaled into the nasal cavity, they cause diseases that cannot be cured by medicine.
[Deer Horn (Lu Jiao)]
Eucommia Bark (Duzhong, 杜仲) serves as the guiding herb (shi).
Salty, warm. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Assists ministerial fire, unblocks the Du Mai. Raw use: moves blood, reduces swelling, wards off evil influences. Cooked use: strengthens yang, moves blood, eliminates nocturnal emission with sexual dreams. With Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Renshen, 人参) and Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang, 生姜), it treats postpartum frequent vomiting. With Carbonized Human Hair (Fatan, 发炭), it treats infantile dysentery (zhixia). With Viola Yedoensis Herba (Diding, 地丁), it dissipates breast abscesses in deficient individuals. Taken with wine, it treats fractures and dislocations. For applying to toxic swellings, grind with vinegar. To move blood stasis, [text missing]. Contraindicated for those with blazing fire at the Gate of Life (Mingmen) and sores/toxins requiring cooling treatments.
[Deer Horn Frost (Lu Jiaoshuang)]
Cut the horn, place it in a clay vessel, wrap with mud, and burn in fire for one day. It resembles jade powder; this is named "frost." Its therapeutic actions are the same as Deer Horn (Lu Jiao).
[Deer Horn Gelatin (Lu Jiaojiao)]
Benefits from fire. Averse to Rheum Palmatum Rhizome (Dahuang, 大黄).
Sweet, salty, warm. Enters the blood aspect of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Supplements the yang pathway within yin, unblocks the blood residence of the Du Mai. Strengthens sinews and bones, treats metrorrhagia and leukorrhea; it is a key medicine for treating uterine coldness in women, fetal coldness, and abdominal pain. With Os Draconis (Longgu, 龙骨), it treats night sweats and seminal emission. With Poria (Fuling, 茯苓), it treats frequent urination.
Soak in water for seven days, scrape clean, boil for seven days using mulberry wood fire, add a little vinegar, take out the horn, pound into frost, extract the juice, add non-ash wine, and boil into gelatin. For fractures/dislocations, take with wine.
Contraindicated for those with true yin deficiency, as it will intensify fire and dry up fluids further. Contraindicated for phlegm-heat syndromes and blood disorders.
[Deer Kidney (Lu Shen)]
Sweet, neutral. Boil to make porridge and eat; it tonifies the middle, calms the five zang organs, and strengthens primal yang.
