[Horn]
Sweet, cool. Used for various foreign bodies penetrating the flesh and long-standing accumulation of toxins forming fistulas; also suitable for all phlegm-heat and evil pathogens, preferably administered as powder from raw horn. Combined with white plum (Fructus Mume), applied to bone spicules embedded in flesh. Taken as charcoal after calcination, it treats polyuria.
[Skin]
Sweet, cold. Treats gan syndrome (pediatric malnutrition/accumulation); applied as charcoal mixed with oil. Also treats non-healing metallic wounds (jin chuang).
[Gallbladder]
Removes corneal opacity (dust membrane) from the eyes, applies to carbuncles and swellings, treats halitosis.
[Whisker/Hair]
Must be pounded into powder first, then added to other medicines.
Resin of Pinus (Songzhi) and Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) act as guiding herbs (shi). Averse to Polyporus Umbellatus (Leiwan), [missing character] Jun, Aconiti Radix (Wutou), and Aconiti Radix Lateralis Preparata (Wuhui). Avoid salt.
[Bitter, sour, salty, cold. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Disperses fire in the Heart meridian, drains pathogenic factors of Liver wood, clears heat in the stomach. For typhoid fever (shanghan), epidemic febrile diseases, irritability and vomiting, eruption of macules/petechiae, blood stasis causing delirium, mania, jaundice, hematemesis, epistaxis, convulsions, irritability, blood-heat in smallpox/rubella, carbuncles and sores, there is no condition it cannot treat. With Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma), it disperses constrained heat in the Yangming meridian. (Unblocks blood stasis in the Yangming meridian.) With Forsythiae Fructus (Lianqiao), it treats heat pathogens entering the collaterals. (Grind to a sharp point for administration, induces sweating very rapidly.) With black horn tip, grind into juice and take orally. Sliced thinly and decocted in water is also acceptable. Pregnant women taking it may abort the fetus. Contraindicated in cases of blood deficiency with dry-heat, or when smallpox/rubella are just beginning, as it causes cold to lodge internally preventing eruption. Contraindicated in patients without significant heat.]
Averse to Stephaniae Tetrandrae Rhizoma (Fangji) and Rehmanniae Radix (Dihuang).
[Bitter, cold. Enters the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Hand-Jueyin Pericardium Meridian. Cools the heart and calms the liver; it is a key herb for treating eye cataracts/opacities and gan-worms, and also treats jaundice and convulsions. With Borneolum Syntheticum (Pian Nao), mixed with porcine gallbladder bile, applied to chronic intestinal wind hemorrhoids (ten-year duration), and rubbed on wind-worm toothache. Mixed with Crataeci Fructus (Shijunzi), steamed, ground, and made into pills, treats various types of gan syndrome with emaciation.
Those that spin rapidly like flying when dropped in water are of good quality. Grind for use, or steam until melted for use.]
[This refers to Antelope Horn (Lingyangjiao).]
Bitter, salty, slightly cold. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Treats wind-toxin latent in the bones, disperses heat of seasonal epidemics in the skin and muscles. If vision is obscured due to fire, tendons are tense due to wind, or conditions such as convulsions, dysphagia, bloody dysentery, blood rushing upward, irritability, mania, and swelling/toxins occur, this herb can treat them all. With Uncariae Ramulus Cum Uncis (Gouteng), it extinguishes liver wind. Mixed with albumen of chicken egg (Jizi Bai), applied to erysipelas/red dan. Ground with flowing water from the east, taken orally, treats postpartum irritability, sweating, and unconsciousness. Calcined to retain its nature, ground into powder, and taken mixed with children's urine, treats敗血 (decayed blood) rushing to the heart.
Those that are bright and have tips not blackened are of good quality. Either sliced thinly or ground for use. If ground too coarsely, it may damage the intestines if ingested directly; decoction is safe. Its cold nature attacks the vital generating qi; contraindicated in patients without significant heat.]
