Baima Xuantí (Horse Suspensory Ligament)
Sweet, neutral in nature. Breaks up blood stasis, treats intestinal abscess (intestinal purulent inflammation), cures epilepsy, stops metrorrhagia and leukorrhea. Mix with egg white and apply externally to the site of intestinal abscess. (Symptoms include: crisscrossed patterns on the ear lobes, abdominal pain, or sores like millet grains around the umbilicus, discharging pus and blood; these are the signs of this condition.) Mix with raw oil and apply to chitu head sores (a type of scalp skin disease). Add salt and sprinkle on zouma gan (a severe necrotic oral disease). Mix with lard, wrap in cotton, insert into the anus, and treat insect erosion.
Calcine, slice, and grind into powder for use.
Baima Ni (White Horse Urine)
Can kill parasites and break up zhengjia (abdominal masses). Decoct horse feces for juice to treat sudden death and jiao chang sha (a critical condition of acute abdominal colic).
Strange syndrome: Accidental ingestion of hair forming a mass, with a sensation of insects moving up and down in the throat is such a case. Drinking several bowls of horse urine will expel it.
Baima Jinggu (White Horse Tibia)
Sweet, cold in nature. Descends yin fire, can substitute for Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma).
Use after calcination.
Baima Tougou (White Horse Skull)
Slightly cold in nature. Has slight toxicity. Combined with Ruxiang (Frankincense) and Chao Zaoren (Fried Ziziphi Spinosomi Semen), treats insomnia due to gallbladder deficiency.
Lüni (Donkey Urine)
Pungent, cold in nature. Has slight toxicity. Treats regurgitation, kills various parasites. Mixed with yin-nourishing agents to treat yige (dysphagia). Combined with Renzhongbai (Calcinata Uraei) and Gan Dilong (Dried Pheretima), applied to ears to treat deafness.
Ejiao (Donkey-Hide Gelatin)
Effective when heated. Shuyu (Dioscoreae Rhizoma) acts as its guiding herb. Incompatible with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma).
Sweet, neutral, slightly warm. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian, Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Strengthens the source of water generation, supplements the fluid of Kan (Kidney/Water), moistens dryness, and descends phlegm. Astringes spontaneous sweating, promotes urination, stabilizes wheezing and cough, secures fetal leakage, stops various bleeding, and treats turbid leukorrhea. Effective for all diseases caused by blood deficiency. Combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), corrects pupil abnormalities. Combined with Huashi (Talcum), promotes urination. Assisted by Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), treats bloody dysentery. As the chief herb combined with Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), treats severe epistaxis or hematemesis. (Ejiao descends fire and returns it to its origin.)
True Ejiao shines like lacquer and does not soften in summer. To harmonize blood, steam with wine. To stop bleeding, stir-fry with Puhuang (Lygodii Spora). To stop cough, stir-fry with Ge Fen (Mercurii Subcarbonas). To clear heat, dissolve in tongbian (child's urine).
Contraindications for lung conditions: Qi sinking, vomiting due to food stagnation, and spleen-stomach deficiency are strictly prohibited.
(Seventeen Animal Species)
Gu (Bone)
Pungent, slightly hot in nature. Enters the blood aspect of the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Drives out toxic wind from between bones, repels zhuwu evil qi, applies to dog bites, removes bone splinters.
The left tibia is particularly potent. Process with wine, vinegar, or su (animal fat) before use. The tibia coated with mutton fat and roasted, ground into powder, taken with rice drink or wine, treats chronic persistent dysentery.
The skull, roasted with wine, ground, taken with Tao Nao Tang (Peach Kernel Decoction), treats warm malaria with vomiting.
Contraindicated in cases of liver-kidney deficiency and failure, or waist and leg pain resembling wind-disease.
