[Huainiuxi (Achyranthes Bidentata Root)]
Contraindicated with Baiqian (Cynanchum Atratum Root), Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex). Aversion to Yinghuo (Firefly), Guijia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum), Luying (Euphorbia Humifusa). Avoid beef.
Bitter, sour, neutral in nature. Enters the blood aspect of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian and Foot Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Benefits the essence and qi of the Liver and Kidneys, breaks up stasis and resolves masses caused by blood stasis. Treats flaccidity and bi-syndrome of bones and sinews, chronic malaria leading to dysentery, painful stranguria with hematuria, and various pains in the heart and abdomen. It can also guide fire downward and treat Houbi (obstruction of the throat) and toothache. Crush the leaves together with the root to extract juice, and frequently apply drops to the eyes to treat Nourou Panjing (pterygium/pseudopterygium). Combined with Duzhong (Eucommiae Cortex), it tonifies the Liver. Combined with Rongrong (Cistanche Stem), it benefits the Kidneys. Paired with Chuanduan Rou (Dipsaci Radix), it strengthens the waist and knees. (When Qi does not stagnate, strength is maintained.) Paired with Cheqianzi (Plantaginis Seed), it regulates Yang Qi. Remove the rhizome head and impurities like mud and sand. The action directs downward; use raw for breaking blood stasis. For tonification, bake dry, or soak in Huangjing juice, mix with wine, and steam dozens of times before use. Use raw for breaking blood stasis and applying externally to traumatic injuries. To guide fire downward, stir-fry with Tongbian (Child's Urine). To guide other herbs to the knee joint, both raw and processed forms are usable. Contraindicated in cases of seminal emission, uterine bleeding, Qi sinking causing leg edema, cold viscera leading to loose stools, deficiency of Middle Qi, and spontaneous frequent urination.
[Ziwan (Asteris Radix)]
Pungent, sour, bitter. Enters the Liver Meridian. Dispels wind and treats bi-syndrome. Paired with Qiepi (Solanum Melongena Peel), treats wind-pain.
[Tianmingjing (Glechomae Herba / Glehniae Radix? Context suggests Glehnia or similar, but text says "Tianmingjing Gen" - typically refers to Glehniae Radix or sometimes Picris Root depending on era, here translated as Tianmingjing Root based on literal text, though WHO standard often maps Tianmingjing to Glehniae Radix or Picridis Herba. Given "Gen", likely Glehniae Radix or similar root herb. However, standard Tianmingjing is Glehniae Radix. Let's stick to literal Tianmingjing Root for accuracy to source, noting potential ambiguity.]
Refers to the root of Tianmingjing.
Dispels wind and breaks blood stasis.
Use leaves in spring and summer, roots in autumn and winter; leaf juice acts particularly fast.
[Kuandonghua (Farfarae Flos)]
Kuandonghua serves as the guiding herb (Shi Yao). Aversion to Yinchen. Dislikes Tianxiong, Qumai, Bencao (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma? Text says "Ben", likely Gaoben Ligustici Wallichii Rhizoma et Radix), Leiwan, Yuanzhi.
Bitter, pungent, neutral, slightly warm in nature. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and Hand Shaoyin Heart Meridian. Drains upward-flaring fire, disperses stagnant Qi. Treats phlegm-blood, promotes urination, opens Houbi (throat obstruction), alleviates jingxian (convulsions/epilepsy). (Qi-pain and other symptoms all recede.) Paired with Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix) and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), enters the Heart to calm the Spirit. Paired with Danpi (Moutan Cortex) and Baishao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), enters the Stomach to clear heat. Paired with Kuandong, Baibu, and Wumei, treats chronic cough. Paired with Baiqian and Banxia, treats water-Qi pathology. Remove the head and whiskers, wash clean, soak in honey-water, bake dry, and use.
If Lung Qi is stagnant, condenses into heat, causing the lung lobes to become scorched and dry, resulting in persistent cough, using Ziwan to disperse will open the lung orifices and eliminate the stagnant heat naturally. If Yin deficiency leads to dryness and depletion of Lung fluids, administering agents that scatter Qi and deplete fluids causes significant harm. Why do people regard this as the holy medicine for Lao Sou (consumptive cough/TB cough), failing to investigate its origin and using it recklessly, thereby harming the Yin without realizing it? However, adding a small amount (4-5 fen) of Ziwan to heavy Yin-nourishing formulas to unblock stagnation is also acceptable.
