[Kunbu (Sargassum)]
Salty, cold in nature. Softens hardness and breaks up accumulations; promotes urination to reduce edema. Treats ulcerated hernias, eliminates stubborn phlegm, and treats goiter (thyroid enlargement). When combined with Haizao (Sargassum), it treats sudden swelling of the neck.
Wash clean before use.
[Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma)]
(One of the ten herbs in the Stone Grass category)
Qinpi (Phellodendri Cortex) and Qinjiao (Gentianae Radix) act as its guiding herbs (shi). It is incompatible with Mahuang (Ephedrae Herba) and Didan (Icariis Folium or similar toxic herb depending on context, here likely referring to a specific local herb or typo for 地胆草/Commelinae Herba, but strictly translating the text: Didan). Avoid Yi Tang (Maltose), mutton, and iron vessels.
Pungent, bitter, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Shaoyin Heart Meridian and Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Promotes the circulation of Qi in the five zang organs and unblocks the nine orifices. Warms the stomach and intestines, treats cholera-like disorders (huoluan), cures damp-bi syndrome, heals sores and scabies, stops heart pain, dispels wind from the head, removes evil qi from the middle jiao, and kills various parasites; all these effects stem from its ability to promote Qi movement. Combined with Baifan (wheat flour), it treats hemoptysis due to Lung deficiency. Combined with Pogu Zhi (Psoraleae Fructus), it treats leukorrhea (red and white discharge). Combined with Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus), applied externally to treat sweating and itching in the genital area. Administering fresh juice can revive patients suffering from stroke (zhongdu). Bathing in strong decoction treats warm malaria. Assisting Sijun Zi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction), it treats dysentery with inability to eat (jinkou). Assisting Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) and Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), it treats coma. (Once the pathogenic heat is eliminated, the pericardium collateral becomes clear.) Pulverized and steamed with Zhu Xin (Porci Cor), it treats epilepsy. Those growing in streams are not suitable for use. Those planted in pottery vessels are preferred; those that are one cun long with nine nodes are best. Take fresh rhizomes, wash clean, remove hairs, and crush using wooden mortars; contact with copper or iron causes vomiting and counterflow qi. For treating dysentery, soak in rice washing water and steam until cooked. For treating wind patterns, steam together with Sangzhi (Mori Ramulus). To nourish Heart Qi, stir-fry with honey, crush, and take the juice. It resolves the toxicity of Badou (Crotonis Fructus) and Daji (Euphorbiae Pekinensis Radix).
The Heart prefers dispersion and dislikes obstruction; it also likes consolidation but fears excessive dispersion. Shichangpu is greatly taboo for the Heart. Unless there is a definite indication of Heart Qi stagnation, it should not be used lightly. If used, it serves merely as a guiding herb for other medicines, and the dose should not exceed 5-6 fen.
[Shihu (Dendrobii Caulis)]
Specifically refers to Jinchai Shihu (Gold-hairpin Dendrobium).
Luying (Sambuci Flos or similar) acts as its guiding herb (shi). It is opposed by Jiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus) and Leiwan (Pillulae Arisaematis). It is incompatible with Ningshui Shi (Calcitum) and Badou (Crotonis Fructus).
Sweet, bland, slightly cold. Enters the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, and additionally enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Clears floating fire in the Kidneys thereby securing Yuan Qi. Clears deficient heat in the Stomach thereby stopping thirst and irritability. It clears while tonifying, and tonifies while clearing, but its action is weak and must be combined with Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) to achieve efficacy. Combined with Tusizi (Cuscutae Semen), it eliminates cold-bi. (Because essence and qi become sufficient.) Assisted by Shengdi Huang, it thickens the stomach and intestines. (Because damp-heat is removed. However, if used by those with deficiency-cold, it will cause incessant diarrhea.) Combined with Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) insufflated into the nose, it treats trichiasis (in-turned eyelashes). Made into a decoction with Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and taken orally, it treats residual dampness and dripping in the yin region. Those with luster like gold hairpins, short stems, solid centers, and sweet taste are superior. Stir-fried with salt water, it tonifies the Kidney while clearing Kidney and Stomach fire; soaking in wine is also acceptable, and making into an extract is even better. Those that are long, hollow in the center, and bitter in taste are called Mujie (Wood Dendrobium); their use damages the human body.
