[Pipa (Loquat)]
Sweet, sour, and neutral in nature. It stops thirst and directs Qi downward. It benefits Lung Qi, stops vomiting and reflux, clears heat from the Upper Jiao, and moistens the Five Viscera.
Excessive consumption induces phlegm-heat and damages the Spleen. Consuming it with roasted meat and hot wheat-based foods may cause a disease of yellow jaundice due to damp-heat.
[Loquat Leaf]
Bitter, neutral in nature. Enters the Qi aspect of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. It clears the Lungs and harmonizes the Stomach, directs Qi downward, and clears fire. It eliminates phlegm, stops cough, and treats vomiting, hiccups, and thirst. (It possesses the function of directing Qi downward.) Combined with Rhizoma Imperatae (Mao Gen), it treats vomiting and hiccups caused by warm diseases. Combined with Fructus Gardeniae (Zhi Zi), it treats red nose and facial sores. Paired with Radix Ginseng (Ren Shen) and Flos Caryophylli (Ding Xiang), it treats retrograde vomiting and hiccups. When baked until charred, ground into powder, and taken with tea, it stops epistaxis.
Brush off the hairs to ensure cleanliness. If the hairs penetrate the lungs, they cause persistent coughing. For stomach disorders, apply ginger juice before roasting; for lung disorders, apply honey before roasting. It is contraindicated for those with deficiency-cold vomiting or wind-cold cough.
[Persimmon]
Sour, sweet, and warm in nature. Generates fluids, stops thirst, cleanses the intestines and stomach, and removes irritability and foul qi. Ingested as ash, it is highly effective in stopping dysentery. Its kernel treats podagra (gouty arthritis). (Method to extract the kernel: Mix the kernels with persimmon lac and expose them to the sun; they will naturally split open.)
Excessive consumption causes fever, epistaxis, and damages teeth and sinews. Avoid consuming raw green onions together. (This combination triggers sores and generates phlegm.)
[Ginkgo / Bai Guo]
Also known as Bai Guo.
Sweet, bitter, and astringent. Slightly toxic. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Cooked use: Benefits Lung Qi, stabilizes asthma and cough, reduces urination, and stops turbid leukorrhea. Raw use: Directs phlegm downward, detoxifies, and kills parasites. Paired with Bai Yao Jian, it treats intestinal wind (hematochezia). Paired with Ephedrae Herba (Ma Huang) and Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao), it treats asthma.
Excessive consumption obstructs Qi movement, stirs wind, and triggers convulsions and sudden syncope. (This toxicity can be resolved with soup made from dried pollack.)
[Walnut / He Tao]
Also known as Qiang Tao, also known as He Tao.
It counteracts copper toxicity.
Sweet, warm in nature. The flesh is moistening, and the skin is astringent. Enters the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian. Tonifies the Mingmen (Gate of Life), unblocks the San Jiao (Triple Burner), warms the Lungs, and moistens the intestines. It treats deficiency-cold asthma and cough, heaviness and pain in the waist and legs, heart and abdominal hernia pain, bloody dysentery, and promotes the eruption of smallpox/variolous sores. Combined with Scorpio (Quan Xie), roasted, ground, and taken with wine, it treats perianal abscesses (Bian Du). Combined with warm wine, it treats traumatic injuries. Combined with Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Sheng Jiang), it treats phlegm-cough. (It also treats acid regurgitation caused by food stagnation.) Combined with Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xing Ren), it treats asthma and cough. Paired with Semen Psoraleae (Po Gu Zhi), Cortex Eucommiae (Du Zhong), and Rhizoma Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae (Bi Xie), formed into pills, and taken with warm wine and salt water, it strengthens tendons and bones. To moisten dryness, remove the skin; to astringe, use with the skin. If teeth ache after eating acidic foods, chewing walnut flesh resolves it. Contraindicated for those with phlegm-heat in the Lungs, hyperactivity of Mingmen fire, or diarrhea.
