[Zhi Shi (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus)]
Pungent, sour, warm. Clears phlegm-fluids from the heart region; treats qi-stagnation pain in the epigastrium. Decocted in wine and drunk, it treats cough due to phlegm-qi.
[Jin Gan (Fortunella Crassifolia Fruit)]
Also known as Jin Gan. Sour, sweet, warm. Directs qi downward, relieves diaphragmatic fullness, stops thirst, resolves hangover, and repels foul odors.
[Chou Ju (Citrus Aurantium Peel)]
Also known as Chou Ju. Pungent, warm. Treats dysentery with pus and blood and tenesmus; stir-fried together with Dioscoreae Hypoglaucae Rhizoma (Bixie) until carbonized, ground into powder, and taken with tea. Also treats throat obstruction (Hou Bi), reduces swelling, and guides out toxins. Decoction for washing treats post-illness foot edema.
Strange Syndrome: Sores grow in the throat, layered like stacks, painless, but after a long time, orifices appear emitting foul odor, leading to inability to eat or drink. Continuous consumption of decoction made from Chou Ju leaves cures this.
[Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus)]
Pungent, bitter, slightly cold. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian and Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Breaks up knotted qi, dissipates hard accumulations, drains damp-heat from the lower jiao, clears fire-pathogens from the middle jiao, stops wheezing and coughing. Treats Jie Xiong (chest binding) and fullness, Tan Pi (phlegm癖) and nodules, edema and hypochondriac distension, chest and abdominal closure-pain, vomiting, regurgitation, diarrhea, and dysentery. Combined with Shaoyao (Peony Root), treats abdominal pain. Combined with Huangqin (Scutellaria Root), treats intestinal wind bleeding. Assisted by Dahuang (Rhubarb Root), pushes out pathogenic filth. Assisted by Gualou Ren (Trichosanthes Seed), dissipates痞结 (痞结 -痞结 refers to palpable masses/fullness). Used when stir-fried with bran to charcoal. Greatly damages true yuan (vital energy); should not be used mistakenly if there is no excess pathogen. Contraindicated in pregnant women and those with qi-blood deficiency.
[Zhi Ke (Continued)]
Bitter, sour, slightly cold. Enters the Qi level of the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian and Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian. Breaks qi and overcomes dampness, transforms phlegm and aids digestion. Drains lung qi, removes chest fullness, stops vomiting and regurgitation, reduces swelling, broadens the stomach and intestines, treats diarrhea and dysentery, heals hemorrhoid swelling, disperses wind-rash. With Guizhi (Cinnamon Twig), Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), and Dazao (Jujube), treats costal bone pain. With Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), treats hiccups and belching. With Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome) and Muxiang, treats red and white dysentery. With Binglang (Areca Seed) and Huanglian, treats fullness. With Gancao (Licorice Root), treats constipation in infants. Assisted by Chuanlian (Coptis Rhizome) and Huairui (Sophora Flower Bud), extinguishes swelling and pain of various hemorrhoids. Assisted by Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Gualou Ren, dispels epidemic heat pathogens. Decocted with Huangqi (Astragalus Root), used for soaking prolapsed uterus postpartum. Those from Shangzhou that are aged are superior. Remove the pith and seeds, stir-fry with bran until scorched, remove bran. Citrus and pomelo peels are cold in nature and unsuitable for medicinal use. If taken by those with spleen deficiency, it causes qi stagnation and distension. Contraindicated in those with weak qi and blood.
Ancient scholars often said: "Nothing disperses wind better than invigorating blood; when blood moves, wind follows." However, if qi is closed internally, wind pathogens have no way to exit externally. This is because blood follows qi; if qi stagnates, blood cannot flow, and if blood stagnates, wind also does not disperse. It is also said: "Internal wind invariably transforms from accumulated qi; when qi scatters, wind naturally does not arise." In formulas for invigorating blood, Zhi Ke should be added as an assistant. Medical texts state: "Zhi Ke disperses numbness and itching of the skin, possessing miraculous efficacy," which is what is meant by "when qi moves, wind is extinguished."
