Pungent, bitter, warm. Enters the Qi level of the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Stops vomiting and rebellion, unblocks five types of strangury, clears residual heat in the Bladder, expels Taenia saginata (Cunbai Chong) and gu poison. Resolves fishy smell toxicity. Removing the white pith yields Juhong, which resolves phlegm, directs Qi downward, releases exterior pathogens, and regulates depression in the Blood level of the Lung Meridian. Retaining the white pith harmonizes the middle and regulates stagnation in the Qi level of the Spleen and Stomach. For treating phlegm, stir-fry with Ginger Juice. For directing Qi downward, stir-fry with Child's Urine. For regulating the lower jiao, stir-fry with Salt Water. For deficiency with Qi stagnation, boil-stir-fry with Raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Sheng Gancao) and Phyllanthi Fructus (Wumei) juice. Contraindicated for those with excessive sweating, blood loss, and during the pustule-filling stage of smallpox/rash.
