[Branches and Leaves of Crataegus pinnatifida (Tangli)]
Acid, sweet, astringent, cold. Treats cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, muscle cramps in the calves, and abdominal pain; decocted together with Chaenomelis Fructus (Mugua) into juice, to be sipped slowly.
[Hongshi / Persimmon]
Acid, sweet, neutral. Stops dysentery and diarrhea.
Acid, astringent, warm. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians, and also the Foot Jueyin meridian. Harmonizes the stomach and regulates the spleen, suppresses the liver, and astringes the lungs. Specifically treats disorders of the sinews, and can cure summerheat-dampness. (When blood is forced by heat, sinews contract causing pain; when qi is stagnant due to dampness, sinews become flaccid and soft. Chaomeng cools blood and secures against collapse, thus treating both.) Combined with Mori Folium (Sangye), it treats abdominal pain due to cholera. Paired with Arecae Semen (Binglang), it treats Hongkong foot (Jiaoxie) rushing to the heart. With Duzhong wine, it treats chronic dysentery. (Chaomeng awakens and removes dampness from sinews and bones; Duzhong combines and tonifies sinews and bones. Used together to secure and stop, dysentery ceases naturally.) Assisted by Shengdi Huang, plus Ruxiang and Moyao, it treats nuchal rigidity and sinew tension. (This is due to pathogenic factors affecting the Liver and Kidney.) Combined with Qingyan, Ganju, and Aijun, it treats Kidney deficiency-cold, where Qi attacks the abdomen and hypochondrium causing distension and pain.
Mixed with eel saliva and applied externally to fan-shaped hemorrhoids.
Those from Xuanzhou that are aged are superior. Do not use iron vessels; slice with a copper knife. Excessive consumption damages teeth and bones, leading to strangury. Contraindicated for those with blood deficiency causing weak legs.
[Branches and Leaves]
Acid, astringent, warm. Treats heat dysentery.
[Tangzi / Also known as Shanliguo]
Acid, sweet, slightly warm. Enters the Foot Taiyin and Foot Yangming meridians. Eliminates accumulation and disperses stasis, breaks up Qi stagnation and transforms phlegm. Regulates sores and ulcers, eliminates postpartum uterine mass (Erzhen), treats hernia, and promotes eruption of smallpox/rashes. Decocted with Zicao in wine and taken orally, it promotes eruption of smallpox/rashes. Combined with Huixiang, it treats oblique hernia. Paired with Lurong, it treats lower back pain in the elderly. Taken with Ai Ye decoction, it treats intestinal wind bleeding.
Use without the core. The core can digest food and grind away accumulation, treat hernia, and facilitate childbirth. When crushed, it resolves stasis. When not crushed, it aids digestion. Soaked in children's urine, stir-fried to charcoal with Jiang汁 (Ginger juice), it is very effective at removing accumulated blood. Contraindicated for those with Qi deficiency and loose stools, and for those with Spleen deficiency and anorexia. Contraindicated for those taking Renshen.
[Refers to Hongshi / Red Persimmon]
Sweet, astringent, cold. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians. Stops dry mouth, suppresses Stomach heat, and unblocks the ears and nose. (When Fire of the Lung and Kidney organs flares upward, external orifices close and become blocked; when Fire Qi descends, external orifices clear naturally.)
Contraindicated to eat with alcohol. Also contraindicated with crab, lest it cause abdominal pain. Excessive consumption draws phlegm-fluids upward.
[Dried Persimmon]
Sweet, astringent, neutral. Enters the blood aspect of the Hand and Foot Taiyin meridians. Moistens the lungs and calms coughing. Treats Fei Wei (Lung萎/atrophy), removes intestinal wind. Combined with Jingmi and Douchi, it treats deafness and nasal congestion. Combined with Qingdai and Zhuru, it treats hemoptysis with phlegm. Burnt to charcoal, it treats lower bleeding. Steamed with rice, it treats regurgitation/vomiting. One Shibing (Persimmon cake), boiled into juice and drunk hot, treats postpartum cough and rebellious Qi.
[Persimmon Frost]
Sweet, cool. Enters the Hand Taiyin meridian. Generates fluids and stops thirst, transforms phlegm and calms coughing, clears depression-heat in the Heart and Lungs. Treats throat and oral ulcers, stops hematemesis due to consumptive disease. Paired with Shidi Tan (Charred Persimmon Calyx), applied externally to sores.
[Persimmon Calyx]
Decocted and taken orally, it treats hiccups. Added with Dingxiang and Shengjiang, it opens phlegm and dissipates depression, with rapid efficacy.
There is "Dingxiang Shidi Tang" for treating hiccups, but people do not know about hiccups caused by Qi deficiency after illness. When Spleen and Stomach damage Qi, water carries Ministerial Fire straight up the clear pathway causing hiccups. When Evil Fire is suppressed, mistaken administration of Renshen and Baizhu causes closure in the Middle Jiao leading to hiccups. In deficient persons lacking Yin, Yang Qi violently rebels downward, reaches the Upper Jiao but cannot exit, causing hiccups. If one generally administers Shidi Tang, the hiccups will inevitably worsen.
