[Bichengqie (Piperis Kadsurae Fructus)]
Acrid, slightly warm. Enters the Qi level of the Foot-Taiyang meridian. Disperses cold qi in the Bladder, expels cold pathogens from the Spleen and Stomach. Combined with Doukou Ren (Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus), it treats dysphagia and food stagnation (due to the removal of cold pathogen). Paired with Jingjie (Schizonepetae Herba) and Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), it treats nasal congestion (wind-cold in the Lung). Assisted by Liangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma), it treats cold-induced hiccup.
Use the fruit without the stalk and wrinkled skin. It can be soaked in wine, steamed, sun-dried, or stir-fried with wine. Contraindicated in cases of deficiency-heat.
Liaoshi (Polygoni Multiflori Caulis) is its guiding herb. It fears Zishiying (Fluorite). It clashes with Danshen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Xiaoshi (Natrii Nitratis Crystallo), and Baie (Kaolinite).
[Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus)]
Acrid, bitter, hot. Toxic. Enters the Blood level of the Foot-Jueyin meridian, and concurrently enters the Qi level of the Foot-Taiyin and Foot-Shaoyin meridians. Soothes the Liver and dries the Spleen, warms the Middle and directs rebellious Qi downward, opens depression and resolves stagnation. Eliminates yin-dampness, drives out wind-cold.
Treats all types of rebellious Jue Qi ascending, Jueyin headache, vomiting with acid regurgitation, chest and epigastric fullness with a sensation of blockage in the throat, sores on the throat and tongue, intestinal wind diarrhea, Hongxiangjiao (podagra/edema of the feet), hernia and Yin poison, various pains in the heart and abdomen, parasitic diseases and sudden attacks, and residual blood after childbirth.
Combined with Liuhuang (Sulfur) and Dasuan (Allii Sativi Bulbus), ground into a uniform paste and applied to the abdomen, it treats pediatric testicular retraction (caused by cold exposure at birth; still treat by fumigating with smoke from Chuangsizi (Cnidii Fructus)). Combined with Fuling (Poria), it treats phlegm-fluid retention. Combined with salt water, it warms the Bladder and treats Spleen-deficiency diarrhea (other heat herbs cannot separate clear from turbid). Combined with Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), it treats dry retching and acid regurgitation (do not use if the acid regurgitation is due to fire).
Paired with Ju Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) and Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), it treats hiccups caused by Kidney Qi rebelling upward. Paired with Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), it treats dysentery with watery stools. Mixed with vinegar and applied to the sole of the foot, it treats sores on the throat and tongue (although its nature is hot, it can guide heat downward).
Older stored material is superior. Closed fruits are toxic. Select clean material, remove stems, soak to remove bitter juice, then sun-dry or stir-fry. To stop vomiting, stir-fry with Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma) water. To treat hernia, stir-fry with salt water. To treat blood disorders, stir-fry with vinegar. To disperse cold, stir-fry with wine. Chew several raw grains and rub on the mouth for trismus caused by smallpox. Excessive use damages Shen (Spirit) and depletes Yuan Qi (Original Qi), stirs up fire causing blurred vision, triggers sores and sore throat. Do not use if the condition is not due to cold stagnation with dampness. Even if there is cold-dampness, use sparingly. It descends Qi most rapidly; contraindicated in Yang deficiency.
Strange Syndrome: Persistent alternating chills and fever for several days, limbs hard as stone, producing a sound like bells or chimes when struck, with gradual emaciation of the body. This is due to Liver Qi knotting.
Combine with Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) in equal proportions to soothe Liver Qi, and self-healing will occur.
Wuzhuyu obtains the Qi of the East (Zhen trigram), entering directly into the Jueyin meridian, attracting the Yang Qi that is perishing and failing to ascend, thereby reaching the Upper Jiao. Zhang Zhongjing used Wuzhuyu Tang for Shaoyin syndrome presenting with cold extremities and severe irritability/restlessness, to firmly consolidate Yuan Yang within the Jueyin, which is indeed well-founded. Wang Youyuan stated: Both Shaoyin and Jueyin present with irritability. The restlessness in Shaoyin lies in Water, caused by Dragon Fire failing to return to its source; Ginger and Aconite can restore Yang. The restlessness in Jueyin lies in Wood, being Thunder Fire rebelling upward; using Ginger and Aconite would exacerbate its violent nature. Wuzhuyu, Ginger, and Aconite are all extremely hot in nature but have different primary indications. Misuse will damage Yuan Qi, causing Yuan Yang to dissipate instantly, leaving no medicine capable of rescue.
