Tea, also known as Ming.
Sweet and bitter in flavor, cold in nature. Enters the Hand Jueyin Pericardium Meridian and Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It descends fire, eliminates phlegm, relieves irritability, and quenches thirst. It removes greasiness, clears the head and eyes, and resolves alcohol and food poisoning. When combined with Ganju (Chrysanthemum Flower), it treats headache. When paired with Ganjiang (Dried Ginger), it treats cholera-like syndrome. When mixed with Baifan (Alum) and ground, taken with cold water, it resolves various toxins. Added to Zishatang (Brown Sugar), it unblocks menstruation and relieves constipation. Combined with Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger), it treats bloody and white dysentery. Mixed with scallion juice and formed into pills, it treats postpartum constipation. (If laxatives such as Dahuang are used at this time, mortality is extremely high.) Burning its smoke for fumigation during sexual activity resolves itching caused by smallpox lesions.
The tender buds: those with a sweet taste are superior. Those with a bitter taste should be decocted strongly and drunk freely to induce vomiting, treating phlegm-Jue headache (sudden fainting accompanied by headache due to phlegm obstruction). Contraindicated for those with deficiency-cold constitution, blood deficiency, insomnia after drinking alcohol, and especially on an empty stomach. Those taking Weilingxian (Clematis Root and Rhizome) or Tufuling (Smilax Glabra Rhizome) must avoid drinking tea.
Strange Syndrome: A sound in the brain resembling insect burrowing, named "Big White Ant." Use Mengzi (Tea Seeds) ground into powder, insufflated into the nose until cured.
(Fruit Category, Seven Types)
Sweet Melon. Bitter in flavor, cold in nature. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Relieves irritability and quenches thirst. Unblocks the Sanjiao (Triple Burner) and promotes urination.
Excessive consumption causes disease and abdominal distension. (Toxicity can be resolved by eating salt flower, drinking wine/water, or taking Muxiang/Musk.) Contraindicated for those with weak stomachs. Do not eat melons that sink in water. Do not eat melons with two nostrils and two peduncles, as they are fatal.
Peduncle (Gadīng), also known as Guading or Kudingxiang.
Bitter, cold, toxic. Enters the Foot Yangming Stomach Meridian. Induces vomiting of wind-heat phlegm-saliva in the chest and diaphragm, and clears damp-heat and gu-poison from the whole body. Mixed with Muxiang (Musk) and Xionghuang (Realgar) powder and insufflated into the nose, it treats nasal polyps. (Another formula uses Baifan powder; another uses Dingxiang powder.) Paired with Jinghua Water (first-drawn well water in the morning), it treats mania with a desire to run. Paired with Jiangchi (Prepared Soybean) and Chixiaodou (Adzuki Bean), it induces vomiting of pathogenic factors in the chest and diaphragm. Paired with Dingxiang (Clove), ground together into powder and insufflated into the nose, it treats Yin Jaundice (dark yellow jaundice). (Yellow fluid flows out after a short while; use once every other day until recovery.)
Commonly called Lengfangua (Cold Rice Melon). Its peduncle is particularly effective. Remove the rind and use only the peduncle, about half cun long, sun-dry until extremely dry, then grind for use. Whenever inducing vomiting, it must be done on clear days, before Si-Wu hours (9 AM - 1 PM). The patient should fast overnight; acute cases are exempt from this rule. If many patients become severely exhausted after vomiting, administer Muxiang decoction to stop the reaction.
Contraindicated for those without excess pathogens in the Upper Jiao.
