[Watermelon]
Also known as "Cold Melon" (Hangua).
Sweet, bland, and cold in nature. Eliminates irritability and quenches thirst. Resolves summerheat and alcohol toxicity; treats throat obstruction (Houbi, characterized by soreness and swelling of the throat) and mouth sores; promotes urination; treats bloody dysentery. (Its cold nature clears heat; excessive consumption damages the middle warmer and aids dampness. For those poisoned by bad melons, decocting the rind for oral administration is effective.)
[Watermelon Seed Kernel]
Sweet and cool in nature. Clears the lungs and moistens the intestines; harmonizes the middle jiao and quenches thirst. Consumed after stir-frying, it tonifies the middle qi.
[Grape]
Also known as "Putao".
Sweet, neutral, with sour and astringent properties. Enters the Hand-Taiyang (Small Intestine) meridian. Treats fetal gas rushing to the heart; treats bi-syndrome of sinews and bones due to dampness; eliminates intestinal fluid accumulation; induces eruption of smallpox/variolous eruptions. Combined with fresh lotus root and Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix), crushed into juice and mixed with white honey, it treats hot strangury (Relin, painful and scanty urination due to heat-dampness).
Excessive intake causes mental restlessness, chest oppression, and blurred vision.
[Grape Root, Vine, and Leaves]
Sweet, neutral, and astringent. Treats vomiting and hiccups; promotes urination through the small intestine; reduces swelling and fullness; treats nausea following cholera-like illness (Huoluan).
[Kiwi Fruit]
Also known as "Tengli".
Sour, sweet, and cold in nature. Enters the Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) and Foot-Yangming (Stomach) meridians. Stops sudden severe thirst; resolves irritability and heat; regulates the middle jiao and directs qi downward. Suitable for those with excess-heat conditions.
Excessive consumption chills the spleen and stomach and triggers diarrhea.
[Pear]
Sweet and cold in nature. Enters the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) meridian. Moistens dryness and generates fluids; harmonizes the middle jiao and assists the spleen. Clears heat and quenches thirst; resolves alcohol toxicity and phlegm; stops vomiting and hiccups; promotes bowel and bladder movements.
Combined with Shengdi Huang (Rehmanniae Radix) and Maidong (Ophiopogonis Radix), it treats fluid exhaustion in Spring-Warmth diseases. Mixed with ginger juice, it treats regurgitation and dry retching. Mixed with Reed Rhizome juice (Lugen Zhi), lotus root juice, human milk, child's urine (Tongbian), and Bamboo Sap (Zhuli), it treats dryness of the epigastrium.
[Sugarcane]
Sweet and warm in nature. Enters the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) meridian. Harmonizes the middle jiao and assists the spleen; soothes the liver and harmonizes blood. Moistens the lungs and heart; treats cough with phlegm. Combined with Wu Mei (Mume Fructus), it treats Jin Kou Li (Jin Kou Dysentery, where the patient cannot eat due to severe dysentery). Combined with freshly drawn water, it treats failure of scabs to fall off after smallpox/variolous eruptions. Decocted with ginger juice, it treats vomiting, counterflow, wheezing, and cough.
Decocted with wine and drunk, it invigorates blood. Excessive consumption aids heat, damages teeth, and causes worms. Eating it together with bamboo shoots may form Jia masses (abdominal masses).

Eliminates alcohol accumulation; stops diarrhea and dysentery; applied externally to metal wounds (Jinchuang); resolves crab toxicity. Combined with ginger juice, it treats restlessness and thirst in Huoluan. Combined with Shengdi Huang juice and Tongbian (child's urine), it treats thirst in Shanghan (Cold Damage) and postpartum mental confusion. Mixed with pear juice, it treats phlegm-heat. Drunk with honey, it treats irritability and thirst. Crushed into juice and drunk, it treats crab toxicity (crab poisoning inevitably leads to dysentery).
