Sweet, cold. Reduces edema, treats kwashiorkor-like emaciation (Gan Shou). When mashed and mixed with Moschus (Musk) applied to the umbilicus, it treats toxic dysentery with inability to eat (Jin Kou).
The juice resolves heat toxicity, promotes diuresis, and treats "Toad Plague" (a epidemic disease characterized by swelling of the head and face). Charred into carbon, mixed with honey and applied topically, it treats sores.
Frog bone is hot in nature; consuming it causes painful, dribbling urination, soreness and pain below the umbilicus, and can even lead to death. Grinding Plantaginis Semen (Cheqianzi) or Plantago herb (Cheqiancao) and drinking the water can resolve this toxicity.
Also known as Tadpoles.
Treats heat-fire sores and scabies; all are treated by mashing and applying topically. Paired with black mulberry fruit (Hei Sang Shen), half a jin each, sealed tightly in a bottle and hung on the east side of the house for one hundred days until liquefied into mud, this substance dyes beard and hair, keeping them permanently black as lacquer.
Averse to slug (Kuo Yu), spider, white salt, chicken manure, and Morus alba root bark (Sang Bai Pi).
Pungent, warm. Toxic. Enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. It can arrest violent wind pathogens and eliminate blood stasis. Boiled with egg white, it treats abdominal distension large as a basket. Boiled and roasted in wine, it treats "snake syndrome" in the abdomen (characterized by frequent hunger but vomiting immediately after eating).
Remove the head and feet, wrap in lotus leaf and bake/roast, or stir-fry with willow branch powder on a new tile until blackened, or roast with wine, according to the specific method required by the condition.
The centipede (Qian Zu Chong/Millipede) has white fleshy protrusions on its head and a sharp mouth; if ingested by mistake, the fishy odor enters the crown causing death. For poisoning, apply mulberry tree sap, salt, and garlic. Black chicken manure and slug can also be applied externally. Earthworm and mulberry bark can also detoxify it.
Averse to green onion and salt.
Salty, cold. It guides other herbs directly to the site of the disease. Resolves seasonal heat toxicity, eliminates wind-dampness phlegm accumulation. Promotes urination, treats jaundice, cures podagra/foot qi (Xiang Jiao), treats traumatic injuries, expels parasitic masses, breaks blood clots. Mixed with flour, stir-fried, ground, and swallowed, it treats insanity/epilepsy. Paired with alum powder (Ku Fan), applied to gums for bleeding. (Adding Musk is better.) Juice extracted, it treats relapse due to overexertion (Lao Fu). (Symptoms may include testicular swelling, retraction into the abdomen with colic, heaviness of the body, inability to lift the head, urgent heat in the lower abdomen, severe spasms approaching death.) Mixed with Schizonepeta juice, it treats...
White earthworms are preferred. Soaked in water for one day, then in wine for one day, dried by baking before use. Mashed into juice, taken with well water, it treats high fever. Alternatively, dissolved with salt in water, charred into carbon, or stir-fried with Sichuan pepper and glutinous rice, processed according to the therapeutic method.
If an earthworm bites a person, symptoms resemble severe wind-stroke, with loss of eyebrows and hair. Soak in iron oxide water (Duan Shi Shui) or salt water, and drink it to recover.
