[Loach / Mole Cricket] (Anura: Gryllotalpa)
Also known as "Tu Gou" (Earth Dog).
Salty, cold. Toxic. Indicated for edema and stone strangury (urinary calculi); can be used to extract arrowheads embedded in flesh. (Crush into juice, drip three to five times onto the affected area for spontaneous expulsion.) Combined with dung beetles (Scarabaeidae), it promotes the unblocking of both bowel and urinary passages.
Combined with pangolin scales (Manis pentadactyla powder), ground together and insufflated into the ear canal to treat deafness.
Remove wings and feet, stir-fry until cooked, use only the lower segment, not the upper. Male specimens are preferred for their stronger efficacy. Those that sing well and fly are males. Contraindicated in deficient persons.
[Ground Louse / Ground Beetle] (Cicindelidae or similar)
Acrid, slightly warm. Primarily brightens the eyes. Treats blindness (Qing Mang), expels miasma and adverse influences, and unblocks mental clarity.
[Toad] (Bufo bufo gargarizans)
Salty, warm. Enters the Hand-Taiyang and Foot-Taiyang meridians. Treats neck stiffness due to wind-stroke, manages convulsions and infantile tetanus (Tian Diao), and eliminates strangury, urinary retention, and hematuria. (Insert twenty toads into the vagina of a woman to cure hematuria; insert one into the urethra to treat urinary retention/Zhuan Bao.) Charred and applied externally to treat macroglossia (Chong She).
[Ground Beetle / Earthworm Beetle] (Eupolyphaga sinensis)
Also known as Di Shi.
Sour, warm. Enters the Foot-Jueyin liver meridian. Treats qi strangury (dysuria), alternating chills and fever, infantile lockjaw (Cuo Kou), and inverted chickenpox lesions. Ge Hong also used it to arrest malaria. Combined with croton seeds (Crotonis Fructus) and pepper (Piperis Fructus), formed into pills with rice paste to treat wind-toothache. (Wrap one pill in cotton, bite on it; after some time, saliva flows out, spit it out, and relief is immediate.)
Averse to soap pod (Gleditsiae Fructus), Acorus (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma), and Wuyou (a plant).
Salty, cold, toxic. Breaks up old blood stasis and accumulations; applied externally to treat macroglossia and woody tongue. Combined with frankincense (Olibanum), myrrh (Myrrha), natural pyrite (Pyritum), dragon bone (Dinosaur Bone), etc., in equal parts, plus a small amount of musk (Moschus), taken 3 fen per dose with wine, to treat fractures and dislocations for bone knitting.
Remove feet, or stir-fry, or intoxicate with wine before use. Not suitable if there is no blood stasis.
[Blue Bottle Fly / Flesh Fly] (Calliphoridae)
Also known as Fei Meng.
Bitter, slightly cold, toxic. Enters the blood aspect of the Foot-Jueyin liver meridian. Circulates through all collaterals, capable of attacking blood where true qi circulation fails. Treats redness and pain in both eyes and traumatic tearing. Combined with moutan bark (Moutan Cortex), treats bruises and falls causing blood stasis. (For old blood stasis in bones, these two herbs are used.)
(Eight types of damp-born creatures)
[Frog / Toad variant]
Acrid, cool. Slightly toxic. Enters the Foot-Yangming stomach meridian. Clears heat and detoxifies. Moves dampness, kills parasites, eliminates childhood malnutrition syndrome (Gan Bing), and dissipates hard accumulations. Extract juice, mix with well water, to treat epidemic febrile diseases with macules. If a dog bites a rat, the powdered rat can be applied externally. For dysentery and diarrhea, roast, grind, and take with water. For traumatic injuries, crush live specimens and apply wet compresses. For gan erosion forming masses, consume as raw meat slices. Burn with pig lard and apply externally to treat tinea caused by wind-damp.
Dry in shade, soak in wine for three days, bake dry before use. Large form with bumpy back, slow-moving, non-jumping, non-singing ones are Toads (Chan Chu). Small, jumping, rapid-moving ones are named "Xia Ma", not used in medicine.
[Toad Venom / Chan Su]
Acrid, hot, toxic. Treats carbuncles and back sores; externally draws out toxins, internally attacks pathogens. Combined with cinnabar (Cinnabaris) and wheat flour, formed into tablets, taken with scallion decoction to treat malignant sores. (Cure occurs with sweating.) Combined with cinnabar, musk, and human milk, instilled into the nose to treat cerebral gan; combined with gelatin (Colla Corii Asini) and rice vinegar, dissolved and applied around swelling/toxins. (Until dissipation is achieved.) For severe carbuncle toxins, combine with other herbs and take 2-3 li, utilizing poison to attack poison. When sores have ulcerated and muscle regeneration is desired, using Chan Su causes abnormal pain. Accidental ingestion leads to death with swollen head and eyes.
Chan Su can rot human muscles; do not use lightly. If Chan Su enters the eye, causing swelling and blindness, wash and instill with purple sage root juice (Zicao Juice) to resolve it.
[Toad Liver]
Specifically treats snakebites where fangs remain embedded in flesh, unbearable pain; application causes immediate extraction.
[Toad Gallbladder]
Instill bile onto the tongue to treat infantile umbilical tetanus with aphonia.
