[White Hyacinth Bean] (Bai Biandou)
Sweet, bland. Enters the Qi aspect of the Foot-Taiyin Spleen Meridian. Harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach, unblocks and benefits the Triple Burner, transforms clear Yang to ascend and turbid Yin to descend, dispels summerheat and dampness. Treats cholera-like disease (Huoluan), remedies vomiting and reverse flow of Qi, stops diarrhea, resolves thirst; combined with Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root), treats excessive drinking due to Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst); combined with Longya (Agrimoniae Herba), treats intestinal wind bleeding; combined with Xiangru (Moslae Herba), treats alternating cold and heat with vomiting and diarrhea; combined with Lvdou (Phaseoli Semen), resolves heat-toxin dysentery.
Stir-fried and ground for use. To prevent Qi stagnation, stir-fry together with Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). For treating vomiting and diarrhea, process with vinegar. For stopping hematemesis due to damp-heat fire, stir-fry until charred.
Eating alone or in excess causes Qi obstruction and damages the Spleen.
[Flower]
Mix powder with rice water decoction to treat leukorrhea (red and white discharge). Add a small amount of salt to treat metrorrhagia that does not stop.
[Leaf]
Crush and extract juice to treat cholera-like disease with vomiting, diarrhea, and muscle cramps (Zhuanjin). Apply externally to treat snakebite toxicity.
[Liu Shen Qu]
Sweet, neutral. Warms the Middle and descends Qi. Benefits the intestines and stomach, treats hiccups. Stir-fry until charred to stop hematemesis.
(Thirteen types of fermented preparations)
[Dou Chi] (Fermented Soybean)
Works well when combined with vinegar.
Bitter, cold. Enters the Hand-Taiyin Lung Meridian. Regulates the Middle and descends Qi, induces sweating and releases the muscle layer. Treats Shanghan (Cold Damage), Wen Nue (Warm Malaria), epidemic febrile diseases, accompanied by alternating cold and heat, headache, irritability, chest fullness and oppression, macules eruption, vomiting and reverse flow of Qi, mental restlessness (Ao Nan) with insomnia, as well as bloody dysentery with abdominal pain. Combined with Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus), treats dysentery. Combined with Congbai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus) and decocted, induces sweating. (In *Zhou Hou Bei Ji Fang*, it is recommended to substitute Mahuang Tang [Ephedra Decoction] with this.) Combined with raw Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), induces vomiting to relieve irritability. Assisted by Xingren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), opens Qi obstruction in the diaphragm.
Contraindicated for patients with Shanghan epidemic conditions where purgation is indicated rather than sweating.
Strange symptom: Flesh protrudes like cones, severe pain and itching, inability to eat; this is Blood obstruction. If not treated promptly, ulceration and pus discharge will continue indefinitely. Taking Dou Chi Tang [Fermented Soybean Decoction] leads to recovery.
External use: Burn red scallion skin to ash, leach with water, and wash the affected area.
[Mai Ya] (Sprouted Barley)
Sweet, neutral. Resolves food stagnation, tonifies Qi and nourishes the Spleen, harmonizes Blood and stops sweating. Benefits the Triple Burner, unblocks water passages. Combined with Yumiqiao (Papaveris Pericarpium) and Baimi (Mellis), stir-fried together, ground into powder, and made into honey pills, treats dysentery with abdominal pain. Stir-fried for use.
[Gu Ya] (Sprouted Rice)
Sweet, neutral. Regulates the Middle and descends Qi, promotes digestion and opens appetite. Unblocks Qi in the diaphragm, resolves phlegm and reverse flow, eliminates vexation and breaks stagnation.
Stir-fried for use.
[Shen Qu] (Medicated Leaven)
Sweet, pungent, warm. Enters the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian. Harmonizes and warms the Stomach, transforms food and drink, resolves accumulation and stagnation. Treats phlegm-reverse, cholera-like disease with abdominal pain, dysentery with bloating, mass formation (Zheng Jie), and postpartum suppression of lactation. Combined with Wuyu (Evodiae Fructus), treats sudden persistent diarrhea.
Contraindicated for pregnant women. Method of preparation: On days of the Sanfu period, take 100 jin of white flour, 3 sheng of natural juices from Qinghao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), Cang'er (Xanthii Fructus), and Yeliao (Polygoni Avicularis Herba), 3 sheng of almond paste, and 3 sheng of red adzuki bean powder. Mix thoroughly to form cakes, wrap with hemp leaves or paper mulberry leaves, similar to the method for making soybean paste. Wait for yellow mold to grow, then dry and store. The older, the better. Stir-fry until yellow and grind for use.
