Zishen, also known as Mumeng.
(Paragraph 1)
It is incompatible with Xinyi (Magnolia Flower). Bitter, cold. Enters the blood level of the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian. Breaks up accumulations and expels blood stasis. Opens the nine orifices, promotes urination and defecation, alleviates alternating chills and fever, and eliminates malaria and dysentery. (If malaria is accompanied by blood accumulation, mania may occur; damp-heat in the intestines and stomach leads to blood stasis resulting in bloody dysentery.) Combined with Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Wumei (Mume Fruit), it treats hematemesis. Combined with Gancao (Licorice Root) and Longyacao (Agrimony), it treats bloody dysentery.
(Paragraph 2)
Bitter, cold. Enters the blood level of the Hand and Foot Jueyin Meridians. Primarily treats heat stagnation in the blood, removes pathogenic factors from the heart and abdomen. Promotes urination and defecation, resolves jaundice, reduces swelling, brings out measles/rubella eruptions, transforms purple macules, opens the nine orifices, unblocks collaterals, and reaches the skin and hair. Combined with Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), it treats blood heat from vaccine toxins. Combined with Gualouren (Trichosanthes Seed), it treats constipation due to carbuncles and sores. Combined with Lanye (Isatis Leaf), Huanglian (Coptis Rhizome), and Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), it treats fire-yellow body heat. (Those with red-black spots on the body are incurable.) Remove the root hairs, take the tender shoots, soak in Licorice water, and stir-fry before use. For blood heat, use raw. For Spleen deficiency, wash with wine, bake dry, or stir-fry with glutinous rice. Contraindicated for those with Spleen Qi deficiency and loose stools.
(Paragraph 3)
Its efficacy is enhanced by wine. Lishi (Plantago Seed) serves as its guiding herb.
(Paragraph 4)
Bitter, cold. Enters the blood level of the Hand and Foot Yangming Meridians. Treats bloody dysentery caused by heat-toxins, heals hematemesis and epistaxis, dispels yang-manic states caused by warm malaria, eliminates goiters and scrofula, applies topically to treat ding sores and carbuncles, and disperses wandering toxic qi. Combined with Chuanlian (Coptis Rhizome) and Muxiang (Aucklandia Root), it treats dysentery with sore throat. Combined with Chenpi (Tangerine Peel), Chuanlian (Coptis Rhizome), and Chuanbai (Phellodendron Bark), it treats dysentery complicated by heat. Baitouweng (Pulsatilla Root) remains still when facing the wind, and can also dispel wind.
(Paragraph 5)
Zhiyingshi (Fluorite) serves as its guiding herb. It is incompatible with Xingren (Apricot Seed) and Lihe Ren (Plum Pit Kernel). It opposes Listone (Calcium Carbonate Mineral). It is chemically opposite to Wutou (Aconite Root).
(Paragraph 6)
Bitter, astringent, slightly cold. Enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian. Treats hematemesis due to lung injury, applied externally for cracked hands and feet, scalds and burns, traumatic injuries, tinea, malignant sores, carbuncles and toxins, necrotic ulcers, and dead flesh; removes putrid tissue and generates new tissue.
Combined with Sheep Liver, dipped in powder, it treats liver-blood hematemesis. Mixed with wine and taken orally, it treats fractures from falls and blows. Combined with Rice Decoction, it stops hematemesis due to lung injury. Combined with Liupi (Pomegranate Peel), taken down with Mugwort Vinegar Decoction, it treats heart pain. Combined with Huangjuan (Yellow Silk) and Danpi (Moutan Cortex), it repairs bladder rupture. Mixed with saliva and applied to the Shangen (root of the nose), it stops epistaxis. (Still needs to be taken down with water, one qian.)
Can be used ground into powder or rubbed for juice.
