Bitter, neutral. Enters the blood level of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian. Breaks qi stagnation within blood. Disperses all blood accumulations and qi knots causing hard masses with pain, reduces swelling, promotes lactation, and induces abortion. Combined with Dingxiang (Caryophylli Flos), it treats regurgitation and nausea (Blood Diaphragm syndrome). Paired with Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), it treats Pi accumulation. For red eyes or toxic eyes, grind into juice and apply externally. For snake or tiger bites, apply as powder externally. To enter the qi level, prepare by fire soaking; to enter the blood level, stir-fry with vinegar. Contraindicated in cases of true qi deficiency and those with pre-existing blood diseases. Strange disease: Blisters erupt all over the body like sand pear fruits, each oozing fluid, with a fingernail-sized stone inside; after the blister bursts, it regenerates, leading to death when muscles are exhausted. Urgently use Sanleng (Sparganii Rhizoma) and Ezhu (Curcumae Rhizoma), five liang each, ground into powder, divided into three doses, taken continuously with wine mixed, which will cure.
Breaking accumulations requires potent herbs to be effective, but the patient must be physically robust and eating normally; only then can these herbs disperse the accumulation. If primordial qi is insufficient and middle qi fails to circulate, forming masses, attacking them will lead to rapid death. Dongyuan's Five Accumulations formulas all use Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) to support primordial qi and strengthen the spleen and stomach, allowing Zheng Jia (abdominal masses) to gradually dissipate without relying solely on harsh reducing drugs, demonstrating profound caution. Careful consideration is essential in their use.
Commonly known as Xiangfu.
Effective when combined with Xiongqiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), vinegar, and Tongbian (Children's Urine).
Pungent, slightly bitter. Enters the qi level of the Foot-Jueyin Liver Meridian and Hand-Shaoyang Sanjiao Meridian. Circulates through the qi level of the Twelve Regular Meridians and the Eight Extraordinary Vessels. Opens the hypochondrium, resolves various depressions, guides blood-invigorating herbs to the qi level to generate blood. (When qi stagnates, blood cannot be generated; unblocking it is the way to generate it.) Treats all conditions caused by blood coagulation and qi stagnation. Combined with Xiakucao (Prunellae Spica), it treats eye pain. (When liver qi flows freely, there is no pain.) Combined with Heichuanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus processed with black bran) and Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma), it descends depressed fire. Combined with Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) and Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), it treats morning sickness in pregnancy. Combined with Haizao (Sargassum), it treats hernia. Combined with Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and [missing herb], it treats deficiency and frailty. (Tonification without stagnation allows qi to generate itself.) Combined with Fushen (Poria with Pine Root), it facilitates communication between heart and kidney. (When qi of heart and kidney does not stagnate, they communicate.) Combined with Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) and Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), it treats headaches due to various depressions. Combined with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) and Shudi (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata), it tonifies yin blood. (When qi stagnates, blood cannot be generated.) Combined with Zhen Aiye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium), it warms the uterus and treats abdominal pains. Combined with Zisu (Perillae Folium), it disperses external pathogens. Paired with Guangmuxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), it regulates middle qi. Paired with Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex) and Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), it resolves obstruction and distension. Paired with Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), it regulates ascending and descending of qi. Paired with Tanxiang (Santalum Album Lignum), it regulates qi and awakens the spleen. Paired with Lizhihe (Litchi Semen), it treats stabbing pain due to blood and qi stagnation. Paired with Xicha (Tea Leaves), it treats headaches.
Raw usage: moves upward to chest and diaphragm, outward to skin. Cooked usage: moves downward to liver and kidneys, outward to waist and feet. To resolve blood depression, use raw. To stop bleeding, charred. To regulate kidney qi, stir-fried with green salt water. To treat qi stagnation, stir-fried with wine. To reduce liver accumulation, stir-fried with vinegar. To transform phlegm and dissipate nodules, stir-fried with ginger juice. To dissipate痞 (fullness), stir-fried with children's urine. To moisten dryness, [method implied]. Contraindicated in cases of distension, blood deficiency with internal heat, early menstruation, and exhaustion of essence and blood with amenorrhea. Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Muzei (Equiseti Herba), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma), Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi Radix), and Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) all enter the Liver Meridian to disperse liver qi, but treatments should be differentiated among them.
Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix) expels wind-heat from the Liver Meridian; Chuanxiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma) ascends blood and qi of the Liver Meridian; Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma) resolves depression of the Liver Meridian; Muzei (Equiseti Herba) disperses cold pathogen of the Liver Meridian; Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma) unblocks blood vessels of the Liver; Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba) removes wind-fire of the Liver Meridian; Zicao (Arnebiae Radix seu Lithospermi Radix) eliminates heat-toxin in the Liver. Each has its appropriate application; do not mix indiscriminately to damage liver qi.
