Huo Xiang (Patchouli Herb): Pungent, sweet, slightly warm. Enters the Qi aspect of the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) and Foot-Yangming (Stomach) meridians. Warms the middle and promotes the free flow of Qi, regulates the Spleen and harmonizes the Stomach; it is a crucial herb for treating vomiting and regurgitation. Treats stagnation of pathogenic Qi in the Upper and Middle Jiao, cholera with vomiting and diarrhea, severe colic, expels foul odors, treats water toxicity, and eliminates halitosis after drinking alcohol. Combined with Huashi (Talcum), it treats vomiting and diarrhea during summer heat. (Adding Dingxiang (Clove) enhances efficacy.) Combined with Dou Ren (Bean Kernel), it treats halitosis after drinking alcohol. Those produced in Guang are superior. The leaves primarily disperse, while the stems primarily unblock. Contraindicated in cases of weak stomach or stomach heat causing vomiting, and in Yin deficiency with fire hyperactivity.
Also known as Huicao (Orchid Grass), Xiangcao (Fragrant Grass), and Linglingxiang (Lingling Fragrance).
Incompatible with Fuhuang (Vat Earth), Sanhuang (Three Yellows: Coptidis Rhizoma, Scutellariae Radix, Phellodendri Cortex), and Zhusha (Cinnabar).
Pungent, warm. Enters the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) and Foot-Yangming (Stomach) meridians. Treats foul Qi in the heart and abdomen, toothache, and nasal congestion. Combined with Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) and Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), it treats swollen and painful teeth. Chuanlian (Coptidis Rhizoma) combined with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) treats dysentery caused by Shanghan (Cold Damage). Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) combined treats Wuse Li (Five-Color Dysentery). Bibo (Long Pepper Fruit) applied externally treats wind-worm toothache. Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) combined treats head wind with dandruff. Excessive consumption causes panting and depletes True Qi.
Also known as Shengtoucao (Head-Provoking Grass), Hai'erju (Child's Chrysanthemum), and also named Xiangcao (Fragrant Grass).
Pungent, neutral. Enters the Qi aspect of the Hand-Foot Taiyin and Foot-Yangming meridians. Removes stale Qi (Qi generated from indigestion of rich and sweet foods), stops Xiao Ke (Wasting-Thirst), promotes urination, eliminates Tan Pi (Phlegm-Pi accumulation), treats Dan Dan (Gallbladder Jaundice), wards off foul Qi, disperses carbuncles and swellings, regulates menstruation, and resolves poisoning from Niu Ma Gu Du (poisonous蛊毒 associated with cattle and horses).
Lan Cao (Agastache Rugosa) and Ze Lan (Leonurus Japonicus Herba) are of the same genus but different species, both growing in damp places near water. They have purple stems, pale branches, red nodes, and green leaves; leaves grow opposite at the nodes with fine serrations. The distinction lies in: Lan Cao has round stems, long nodes, smooth leaves with bifurcations; Ze Lan has slightly square stems, short nodes, and hairy leaves. Both can be harvested when tender and worn.
Contraindicated in cases of deficient Stomach Qi.
Also known as Hai'erju (Child's Chrysanthemum).
Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) acts as its guiding/enabling herb.
Bitter, pungent, warm. Enters the Blood aspect of the Foot-Jueyin (Liver) meridian, and concurrently the Foot-Taiyin (Spleen) meridian. Breaks old blood stasis, removes Zheng Jia (masses and accumulations), eliminates phlegm-pi and gu worms, and treats eye pain and carbuncle swellings. Combined with Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), it treats postpartum edema. Combined with Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), it treats irregular menstruation.
Decocted for fumigation and washing to treat dryness and heat in the vaginal orifice postpartum leading to "Fan Hua" (flower-like prolapse/caruncles). (Adding Kunfan (Alumen) for decoction and washing brings immediate relief.)
The root is named Di Sun (Houttuynia Cordata Rhizome/Stem), with identical main indications. Contraindicated in cases of blood deficiency with dry constipation.
Strange Syndrome: Sudden pain, or abnormal pain all over the body, named Gui Jian Feng (Ghost Arrow Wind). Use Ze Lan (Leonurus Japonicus Herba) 1 liang, Tao Ren (Prunus Persica Seed) 30 grains, decocted with half wine and half water for oral administration.
