(Section 72 of Herbs from Low-Lying Areas)
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma), Gou Qi Gen (Lycii Radix), Sang Gen Bai Pi (Mori Cortex), and Qing Xiang Ye (Celosiae Spicatae Folium) serve as its guiding herbs.
Sweet in flavor, neutral in nature. It enters the Hand Taiyin Lung Meridian and concurrently the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder Meridian blood level. It clears Metal (Lung) qi and pacifies Wood (Liver) and Fire (Heart). It is effective for all conditions involving vexation and heat in the chest, stagnant heat in the blood, wandering wind in the four limbs, damp-bi syndrome of the skin and muscles, and dizziness of the head and eyes; there are no cases it cannot treat. When combined with Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) and Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), it treats headache due to wind-heat. When combined with Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) and made into honey pills, it treats eye diseases caused by Yin deficiency. White-flowered Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) is suitable for those with Lung deficiency; yellow-flowered Ai Ye is suitable for those with Lung heat. Remove the heart and stem base, steam with decoction of Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), then dry in the sun for use. For expelling wind-heat, use raw. For inclusion in tonifying prescriptions, steam with wine, then dry. Bitter-tasting varieties damage Stomach qi and should not be used.
Crushed, it can be used for fumigation and washing of female vulvar swelling.
The roots and leaves, when combined with Di Ding (Violae Herba) and Hua Fen (Trichosanthis Radix), eliminate carbuncle toxins and furuncles. The root can clear urine.
Ye Ju (Wild Chrysanthemum)
Pungent and bitter in flavor, warm in nature. Slightly toxic. It can damage Stomach qi and is only suitable for crushing and applying externally to treat carbuncle toxins and scrofula. (Use dried material in winter.) Crush the roots and leaves together to extract juice, take with good wine to disperse qi and break blood stasis, and treat carbuncles, swellings, and furuncle toxins. (Apply the residue externally afterwards.)
The flowers are small and bitter in taste.
Jing Shi (Elaeocarpus Decipiens Fructus) and Yi Yi Ren (Coicis Semen) serve as its guiding herbs.
Bitter and pungent in flavor, slightly cold in nature. It enters the Foot Jueyin Liver Meridian blood level. It disperses stagnant blood in the five zang organs and moves water-dampness in the abdomen. It treats sprains, falls, and blows, and cures joint pain. For postpartum blood pain, boil in child's urine.
Cu Jiu (Vinegar) and Xiang Fu (Cyperi Rhizoma) serve as its guiding herbs.
Pungent and bitter in flavor, warm in nature. It travels through the three Foot Yin meridians, unblocks the twelve regular meridians, and concurrently enters the extraordinary vessels. It regulates qi and blood and repels various epidemics. It searches out hidden parasites in obscure areas and eliminates dysentery caused by irregular cold-dampness. Combined with Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma), it treats lower body bleeding in men and women. Combined with Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), it drives away cold qi. Combined with Wu Mei (Mume Fructus), it treats night sweats. (If sweating is due to heat in the Yin level, it should not be used.) Combined with Xiang Fu, it regulates qi to treat abdominal pain. Assisted by E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla), it calms the fetus and concurrently treats deficiency-type dysentery. (If fetal restlessness is due to deficiency-heat, it should not be used.) Drink the extracted juice to treat all types of cold qi. Burn to ash and insufflate into the nose to stop persistent epistaxis. Ai Ye produced in Qizhou is superior. It can be used for moxibustion on all diseases and can be included in decoctions or pills. Wine-processing enhances its warming flame; vinegar-processing restricts its dryness and fire. Moxibustion acts downward; internal administration acts upward. For decoction, fresh leaves are preferred; for moxibustion, aged material is preferred. Pounded until soft and cotton-like, then dried for use. It is contraindicated in postpartum blood deficiency generating heat, or in Yin deficiency with fire stirring up blood dryness. Long-term or excessive consumption causes hot qi to rush upward and triggers internal toxin outbreaks.
